The U.S. Paralympics Integrated Adaptive Sports Program Grant Program considers grant applications to provide adaptive sport programs to: (1) Promote lifelong health of disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces through regular participation in physical activity and sports. (2) Enhance recreational activities provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs by promoting disabled sports from local through elite levels and by creating partnerships among organizations specializing in supporting, training, and promoting programs for disabled Veterans. (3) Provide training and support to national and local organizations to provide Paralympic sports training to disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces in their own communities. (4) Provide support to United States Paralympics, to increase participation of disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces in sports.

The National Research Action Plan (NRAP) responding to Executive Order 13625, Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families (August 31, 2012), lays out a framework to ensure that Government funding agencies work together to further our knowledge and diagnostic/therapeutic capabilities with regard to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), TBI, suicide, and related injuries by following longitudinal cohorts of Service members and Veterans. The DoD and VA ORD meet this directive through continued collaboration on and coordination of research efforts in the areas of TBI and PTSD. Additionally, recommendations from the DoD Blast Injury Research Program Coordinating Office's November 2015 International State of the Science Meeting (Does Repeated Blast- Related Trauma Contribute to the Development of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)?) included pursuing longitudinal studies to evaluate links between blast-related TBI with CTE. While a number of longitudinal efforts are ongoing, the DoD and VA seek to pursue a mechanism to collaboratively streamline and continue longitudinal studies of mTBI in active duty and Veteran populations. The objective of this effort is to solicit a single Consortium of a large longitudinal study and supporting sub-studies to analyze a large TBI cohort to include Service members, Veterans, and relevant populations.

The FY17 OPORP Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Award (OPORA) challenges the scientific community to address which orthotic and prosthetic devices generate the best patient outcomes. Outcomes focused research is used to support evidence-based practice which guides providers in the optimization of care to Service members and Veterans with limb loss and/or limb impairment. It is expected that any research findings will also provide benefit to the general population. Applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Federal Government agencies are highly encouraged. The FY17 OPORP OPORA is intended to support research that evaluates the comparative effectiveness of orthotic and prosthetic devices using patient-centric outcomes for Service members and Veterans who have undergone limb amputation.

The Paralyzed Veterans of America Education Foundation, a grantmaking organization of Paralyzed Veterans of America, seeks to fund innovative educational projects that enhance the quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) and/or that increase the knowledge and effectiveness of health professionals in the SCI/D community. The foundation generally supports five types of projects: 1) Consumer, caregiver, and community education demonstration projects that seek to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease; 2) Professional development and education programs that improve the knowledge and competencies of professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community, or fellowship/traineeship programs for professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community; 3) Research utilization and dissemination projects that translate research findings into practice; 4) Assistive technology demonstration projects that improve the identification, selection, and use of assistive devices by people with SCI/D; and 5) Conferences and symposia designed to provide education and opportunities for collaboration among members of the SCI/D community.

The intent of the FY17 PRARP CSRA is to support efforts to generate research resources, tools, or novel research efforts for researchers and/or practitioners in health sciences related to the PRARP's mission. The FY17 PRARP CSRA is open to Principal Investigators (PIs) at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) from any field or discipline. As part of the application, the PI should demonstrate that the study team has experience in both TBI and AD/ADRD research. Preliminary data, while not required, are encouraged. Preliminary data may come from the PI's published work, pilot data, or from peer-reviewed literature.The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 PRARP CSRA will not exceed $500,000. The maximum period of performance is 3 years. The research impact is expected to benefit the military, Veteran, and civilian communities. To this end, the PRARP has identified CSRA Overarching Challenges and Focus Areas by which the intent of this mechanism can be facilitated. These should be carefully considered as part of the application process.FY17 PRARP CSRA Overarching Challenges: This FY17 PRARP CSRA funding opportunity requires applications to address one or more of the following FY17 PRARP CSRA Overarching Challenges:* Paucity of Research Resources: The paucity of research resources to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.

The FY19 PRCRP Idea Award with Special Focus supports innovative, untested, high-risk/ potentially high-reward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods in cancer research that are relevant to active duty Service members, Veterans, other military beneficiaries, and the American public. The "Special Focus" of this award mechanism is on exposures, conditions, or circumstances that are unique to the military, disproportionately represented in a military beneficiary population, or may affect force readiness. Cancers or circumstances with cancer risk that may affect the Service members' support system (military families) are of special importance for total mission readiness. The advancement of knowledge in cancer research, patient care, and/or treatment options in the Military Health System (MHS) is critical to active duty Service members, Veterans, other military beneficiaries, and the American public. Relevance to military health should be articulated with respect to the overall MHS, the FY19 PRCRP Military Health Focus Areas in Section II.A.2, and the mission of the DHP and the FY19 PRCRP.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Mental Health Awareness Training grants (Short Title: MHAT). The purpose of this program is to: (1) train individuals (e.g., school personnel, emergency first responders, law enforcement, veterans, armed services members and their families) to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, particularly serious mental illness (SMI) and/or serious emotional disturbance (SED); (2) establish linkages with school- and/or community-based mental health agencies to refer individuals with the signs or symptoms of mental illness to appropriate services; (3) train emergency services personnel, veterans, law enforcement, fire department personnel, and others to identify persons with a mental disorder and employ crisis de-escalation techniques; and (4) educate individuals about resources that are available in the community for individuals with a mental disorder. It is expected that this program will prepare and train others on how to appropriately and safely respond to individuals with mental disorders, particularly individuals with SMI and/or SED.

The FY18 GWIRP IIFRA supports research to promote new ideas or continued development of applied research in GWI that is aimed at diagnosis or therapeutic advancement. Applications must articulate the pathway to making a clinical impact for Veterans with GWI even if a clinical impact is not an immediate outcome. All applications must focus on Veterans of the 1990-1991 Gulf War affected by GWI. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) to clearly and explicitly articulate the project's potential impact on GWI.

The intent of the FY17 PRARP NIRA is to support early-career investigators interested in novel research efforts or new technologies within TBI and AD/ADRD in support of the PRARP's mission. The FY17 PRARP NIRA is open to Principal Investigators (PIs) within 3 years of their first independent faculty position, from any field or discipline. As part of the application, the PI should demonstrate that the study team has experience in both TBI and AD/ADRD research. Preliminary data, while not required, are encouraged. Preliminary data may come from the PI's published work, pilot data, or from peer-reviewed literature. Note that PIs will be required to verify their eligibility for this award. The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 PRARP NIRA will not exceed $225,000. The maximum period of performance is 3 years. The research impact is expected to benefit the military, Veteran, and civilian communities. To this end, the PRARP has identified NIRA Overarching Challenges and Focus Areas by which the intent of this mechanism can be facilitated. Applications must articulate how results will lead to a clinical impact for Veterans with GWI even if a clinical impact is not an immediate outcome. All applications must focus on features of GWI and Veterans of the 1990-1991 Gulf War affected by GWI. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) to clearly and explicitly articulate the project's potential impact on GWI. The types of activities supported include, but are not limited to, expansion of limited data on candidate markers, mechanistic targets; therapeutics and interventions; validation and advanced research on druggable mechanistic targets, identification and development of leading compounds, and collection of preclinical data for repurposing an existing approved drug or for new Investigational New Drug (IND) application submissions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Applicants proposing to test FDA-approved drugs in animal models for efficacy must explain why preclinical testing is required prior to clinical pilot trials in humans

The FY18 PH/TBIRP CTRR-CTA is intended to support clinical trials focused on TBI cognitive rehabilitation interventions. The award mechanism supports small, Phase I clinical trials to advance the development of knowledge and materiel products for rehabilitation and restoration of function following TBI in Service members, Veterans, and other individuals.

Program Description: The Adaptive Sports Grant (ASG) Program's purpose is to provide grants to eligible adaptive sports entities to plan, develop, manage, and implement programs to provide adaptive sports activities for disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces. Adaptive sports activities mean: (1) instruction, participation, and competition in adaptive sports; (2) training and technical assistance to program administrators, coaches, recreation therapists, instructors, VA employees, and other appropriate individuals; and (3) coordination, Paralympic classification of athletes, athlete assessment, sport-specific training techniques, program development (including programs at the local level), sports equipment, supplies, program evaluation, and other activities related to the implementation and operation of the program grants to adaptive sports entities that will coordinate or provide adaptive sports activities.

Career Development Award supports early-career, independent investigators to conduct impactful research under the mentorship of an experienced lung cancer researcher as an opportunity to obtain the funding, mentoring, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of lung cancer research. This award is intended to support impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at military treatment facilities, military labs, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged.Preliminary data are not required. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed research must be demonstrated.Key elements of this award are as follows.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2013 Campus Suicide Prevention grants. The purpose of this program is to facilitate a comprehensive approach to preventing suicide in institutions of higher education. This program is designed to assist colleges and universities build a foundation for their efforts to prevent suicide attempts and completions and to enhance services for students with mental and substance use disorders that put them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. The Campus Suicide Prevention grants support an array of campus activities to help grantees build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective mental health and substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. Successful applicants will provide "roadmap" of the process by which they have assessed or intend to assess suicide prevention needs and plan/implement infrastructure development strategies that meet those needs. The plan put forward in the grant application must show the linkages among needs, the proposed infrastructure development strategy, and increased system capacity that will enhance and sustain effective prevention programs and services which support SAMHSA's Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Strategic Initiative. The plan must also address the needs of youth at high-risk identified by the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention; including, but not limited to: lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), American Indian/Alaska Natives (AVAN), military family members, and veterans.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) are accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2015 Cooperative Agreements to Benefit Homeless Individuals for States (CABHI-States) grants. The purpose of this jointly funded program is to enhance or develop the infrastructure of states and their treatment service systems to increase capacity and provide accessible, effective, comprehensive, coordinated/integrated, and evidence-based treatment services; permanent supportive housing; peer supports; and other recovery support services to: * Individuals who experience chronic homelessness and have substance use disorders, serious mental illnesses (SMI), or co-occurring mental and substance use disorders; and/or * Veterans who experience homelessness/chronic homelessness and have substance use disorders, SMI, or co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. As a result of this program, SAMHSA seeks to: 1) improve statewide strategies to address planning, coordination, and integration of behavioral health and primary care services, and permanent housing to reduce homelessness; 2) increase the number of individuals, residing in permanent housing, who receive behavioral health treatment and recovery support services; and 3) increase the number of individuals placed in permanent housing and enrolled in Medicaid and other mainstream benefits (e.g., Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance [SSI/SSDI], Temporary Assistance for Needy Families [TANF], Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP]).

The FY15/16 VRP Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (TTDA) is a mission-driven award intended to provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications, including detection, diagnosis, treatment, or quality of life, in at least one of the FY15/16 VRP TTDA Capability Gaps. Products in development should be responsive to the health care needs of military Service members, Veterans, and other individuals living with visual dysfunction. 

The FY18 PH/TBIRP CTRR-CTDA mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY18 and is intended to support the development of clinical trials focused on TBI rehabilitation interventions in the FY18 PH/TBIRP CTRR-CTDA focus areas described in II.A.1. Development of clinical trials focusing on rehabilitation strategies in patients with mild TBI is highly encouraged. The proposed research must be relevant to active duty Service members, Veterans, and their beneficiaries. It is expected that any research findings will also provide benefit to the general population. The PH/TBIRP CTRR-CTDA mechanism supports the design and development of the research resources necessary to serve as a foundation for investigator-initiated clinical trials under future PH/TBIRP CTRR-Clinical Trial Award with the potential to develop knowledge and material products for rehabilitation and restoration of function following TBI. Principal Investigators (PIs) should explain how the proposed future clinical trial will inform the development, refinement, and/or revision of existing standards of care, clinical recommendations, or guidelines.

Projects must address one or more of the FY19 SCIRP IIRA Focus Areas. * Relevance to Military Health: Projects should be relevant to spinal cord-injured military Service members, Veterans, and/or their family members and caregivers. Collaboration with military and VA researchers and clinicians is encouraged. * Preliminary Data: Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from laboratory discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's first-hand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data that are relevant to the mission of the SCIRP and support the proposed research project. IIRA applications may focus on any phase of research from basic through translational. Permitted research includes preclinical studies in animal models, research with human subjects, or human anatomical substances, as well as ancillary studies associated with an existing clinical trial. Applications including animal studies must include a clear justification for the animal model chosen including relevance to human SCI.

The GWIRP Qualitative Research Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY17. Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that seeks to understand the human experience by exploring how people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. The intent of the FY17 GWIRP Qualitative Research Award is to support qualitative research studies that seek to understand the experiences, perceptions, barriers, and beliefs of Veterans suffering from GWI and those responsible for their care. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from basic discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data.

The PRMRP Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (TTDA) is a product-driven award mechanism intended to provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, or quality of life, in at least one of the Congressionally directed FY18 PRMRP Topic Areas. Products in development should be responsive to the healthcare needs of military Service members, Veterans, and/or beneficiaries.
