    The purpose of the Section Health Policy and Administration Grant Program is to stimulate, encourage and support research activities that enhance the body of knowledge related to health policy, clinical administration, global health, and the use of technology in physical therapy. The grants provide funding to assist new physical therapist investigators, or established investigators who are embarking on a new research agenda in these areas of physical therapist practice, leadership, administration, or education. Through this grant program, the Section hopes to encourage the development of proposals that will seek financial support from external agencies.

    The Communications, Circuits, and Sensing-Systems (CCSS) Program supports innovative research in circuit and system hardware and signal processing techniques. CCSS also supports system and network architectures for communications and sensing to enable the next-generation cyber-physical systems (CPS) that leverage computation, communication, and sensing integrated with physical domains. CCSS encourages research proposals based on emerging technologies and applications for communications and sensing such as high-speed communications of terabits per second and beyond, sensing and imaging covering microwave to terahertz frequencies, personalized health monitoring and assistance, secured wireless connectivity and sensing for the Internet of Things, and dynamic-data-enabled autonomous systems through real-time sensing and learning.

State Public Health Approaches to Addressing Arthritis - 0 views

    Arthritis has a profound economic, societal and personal impact. Medical care costs and earnings losses among adults with arthritis were over $303 billion in 2013.(1) Arthritis affects more than one in four adults in the United States, or 54 million+ adults which will increase to 78 million by 2040, and limits 24 million in performing daily tasks.(2) One in 3 adults in rural areas has arthritis and over half of these have arthritis-attributable activity limitation.(3) Arthritis is significant, not just because of its negative impact on function, physical activity and quality of life, but because it is associated with leading causes of death, such as heart disease and diabetes.(4,5) Arthritis can also limit physical activity, which is recommended management for all of these conditions. The rising number of adults with arthritis and associated pain and activity limitations, and its ability to complicate the management of other chronic conditions and risk factors responsible for death, presents a critical public health problem.(2) Increased physical activity and participation in self-management education programs can help adults with arthritis reduce or manage pain and limitations.(6) The American College of Rheumatology's 2012 osteoarthritis management guidelines recommend exercise as a key, nondrug strategy to manage arthritis symptoms.(7) Adults with arthritis can reduce pain and activity limitations by up to 40% by engaging in PA and other management strategies.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify the specific biological or biobehavioral pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. Research applications should test the effects of physical activity, alone or in combination with weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain), on biomarkers of cancer prognosis among cancer survivors identified by previous animal or observational research on established biomarkers other than insulin/glucose metabolism, especially those obtained from tumor tissue sourced from repeat biopsies where available. Because many cancer survivor populations will not experience recurrence but will die of comorbid diseases or may experience early effects of aging, inclusion of biomarkers of comorbid diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease) and of the aging process are also sought. Applications should use experimental designs (e.g., randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), fractional factorial designs), and include transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioral intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied.

    This announcement solicits applications for the Rural Health Care Coordination Network Partnership Program (Care Coordination Program). The purpose of the Rural Health Care Coordination Network Partnership Program is to support the development of formal, mature rural health networks that focus on care coordination activities for the following chronic conditions: diabetes, congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Care coordination in the primary care practice involves deliberately organizing patient care activities and sharing information among all of the participants concerned with a patient¿s care to achieve safer and more effective care. Rural Americans are unhealthier, with higher rates of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, CHF, and COPD and have higher rates of high-risk behaviors such as smoking, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.[1],[2],[3],[4] These high-risk behaviors cause many of the illnesses, suffering and deaths due to chronic diseases and conditions.[5] The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and the high cost of health care in the U.S. bring treatment of the ¿whole¿ person to the forefront, especially as there are often psychosocial (psychological and social) issues related to chronic diseases; for example, there is a link between diabetes and depression. In addition, more mental health problems are seen in the primary care setting than other health care settings; thus, integrating behavioral health care into primary care helps address both the physical and psychosocial aspects of health and wellness. The growing body of evidence suggests that obesity is one of the most significant challenges facing the public health system. If this continues, obesity and the many complications it causes will increase the disease burden in the United States. Poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity affect overall health and are significant risk factors for obesity and other chronic diseases. Obesity in the United States affects 78.6 million (35%) adults and 12.7 million (17%) children and accounts for approximately $147 billion in annual health care costs.     Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the NCI invites applications to support research in new and innovative cohort studies that identify clinical, lifestyle, genomic, and other factors that affect health outcomes (e.g., morbidity, mortality, quality of life, physical, social, and psychological outcomes) in cancer survivors. This RFA supports research that requires the creation of a new prospective cohort study of cancer survivors that addresses a gap in knowledge pertaining to the health of cancer survivors. Proposals must identify the scientific gap that the study addresses, which may include emerging treatments, less common cancer sites, and/or other understudied populations of cancer survivors with disparities. Sample size and proposed data collection must be driven by the scientific questions proposed and include information from the following five domains: 1) disease characteristics (e.g., type, stage), 2) individual survivor characteristics (e.g., comorbidities, SES, social connections, access to care measures), 3) treatment, treatment-related effects, and follow-up care (e.g. dose, adverse events, palliative care), 4) behavioral and lifestyle factors (e.g., diet, physical activity) and 5) quality of life outcomes (health related quality of life). These domains may represent exposures and/or outcomes, depending on the research questions, and should be measured at multiple timepoints, when appropriate. The UG3 Planning-Exploratory Phase focused on recruitment and data collection/utilization, and the UH3 Implementation Phase focused on completing the research agenda. Milestones to be accomplished in the UG3 phase for transition to the UH3 will be proposed by the PI, with approval by NCI, and must include a timeline for recruitment and show feasibility for data collection and analysis. Recruitment is not required to be completed in the UG3 phase, but reasonable progress should be demonstrated so that all aims will be completed in the UH3 phase.

    To foster innovative collaborative approaches to research projects that propose novel pairings of investigators from at least two broadly disparate disciplines. The proposal must focus on the collaborative relationship, such that the scientific objectives could not be achieved without the efforts of at least two co-principal investigators and their respective disciplines.
