The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2013 National Resource Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention (YVP-RC) cooperative agreement. The purpose of this jointly funded program is to serve as a national resource and training center to increase the effectiveness of youth violence prevention, prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders, and promotion of the healthy development of children and youth. The YVP-RC will also provide technical assistance for SAMHSA's Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) and Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children's Health (Project LAUNCH) grant programs. Funding for this announcement is from the Youth Violence Prevention program in the amount of $4.599 million (74 percent) and $1.572 million (26 percent) from Project LAUNCH. It is SAMHSA's intent that the YVP-RC provide states/tribes, organizations, and communities with the resources they need to eliminate or reduce the impact of risk factors and promote positive and protective factors for children, youth, young adults, and their families. This program will advance the dissemination and use of prevention research to inform development and implementation of policies and programs across state and tribal agencies. Planning and implementation of statewide prevention programming and policies will be accomplished through the use of a public health approach. The YVP-RC also seeks to address health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities by ensuring that YVP-RC recipients are encouraged to develop and implement strategies to decrease differences in prevalence, access, service use, and outcomes among racial and ethnic minority children, youth, young adults, and families served.

The purpose of this initiative is to: accelerate innovative drug and device discovery; develop pharmacologic and neuromodulatory tools for basic and clinical research on mental disorders, substance use disorders (SUDs) or alcohol addiction; develop and validate tools (pharmacologic or neurostimulation) in support of experimental therapeutic studies of innovative new candidates for mental disorders; and support early stage human studies to rapidly assess the safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamics of promising drug candidates/devices and new indications for novel Investigational New Drug (IND)-ready agents or Pre-Market Approval (PMA)-ready devices for the treatment of mental disorders, SUDs or alcohol addiction. This FOA encourages applications to advance the discovery, preclinical development, and proof of concept (PoC) testing of new, rationally based candidate agents and neurostimulation approaches to treat mental disorders or SUDs or alcohol addiction, and to develop novel ligands and circuit-engagement devices as tools to further characterize existing or to validate new drug/device targets. Partnerships between academia and industry are strongly encouraged.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) supports pilot work in support of subsequent  studies testing the effectiveness of strategies to deliver evidence-based mental health services, treatment interventions, and/or preventive interventions (EBPs) in low-resource mental health specialty and non- specialty settings within the United States. The FOA targets settings where EBPs are not currently delivered or delivered with fidelity, such that there are disparities in mental health and related functional outcomes (e.g., employment, educational attainment, stable housing, integration in the community, treatment of co-morbid substance use disorders, etc.) for the population(s) served. Implementation strategies should identify and use innovative approaches to remediate barriers to provision, receipt, and/or benefit from EBPs and generate new information about factors integral to achieving equity in mental health outcomes for under-served populations. Research generating new information about factors causing/reducing disparities is strongly encouraged, including due consideration for the needs of individuals across the life span.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association are launching the Healthy Relationships Community Grants initiative to address positive relationship health, with self and others. The initiative will focus on three distinct areas: 1. Build and improve relationship skills of the next generation as a prevention strategy. Organizational efforts may include, but are not limited to, the following: -Educate the public (with a preference for youth populations) on the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships as it relates to inter-personal violence (e.g., intimate partner, family, or teen dating violence) as part of prevention and awareness efforts (e.g., Create, produce and distribute PSAs with relevant content and call to action, Conference/events with a focus on education) -Support existing or introduce new programming on how to break the cycle of violence 2. Build and improve mental health resiliency for vulnerable populations. Organizational efforts may include, but are not limited to, the following: - Provide greater access to quality mental health services and wellness programs - Preventative programs designed to reduce suicide, suicidal ideations and self-harm - Training programs for mental health professionals working with vulnerable populations - School or community-based interventions for vulnerable populations 3. Strengthen and provide critical services to survivors of domestic violence. Organizational efforts may include, but are not limited to, the following: - Capacity building to support organizational mission - Mental health services for survivors of domestic violence - Assist survivors in rebuilding their lives (e.g., professional skills and life skills workshops, Additional education and support materials to improve employee readiness/workplace development skills) - Advocacy efforts to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking

Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) seeks applications to develop, sustain, enhance, and enrich a centralized national biorepository for genetic studies of psychiatric disorders for facilitation and acceleration of the scientific understanding of the genetic risk architecture underlying mental disorders. This effort is expected to involve a functionally integrated, multi-disciplinary team that will provide for open sharing of biosamples and data resources through a single, centralized, national resource to advance basic and translational research in the genetics of mental disorders.

The purpose of this FOA is to support Administrative Supplements to active NIMH grants to foster research across the NIMH Strategic Objectives that target the reduction and elimination of mental health disparities by race and ethnicity, geography, and socioeconomic status in the United States. This initiative aims to generate research within the scientific scope of the parent grant that identifies mechanisms underlying disparities or differences in mental health status and/or enhances optimal delivery of mental health interventions among diverse groups.  

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) supports research on the implementation of collaborative care with the goal of eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in access to, and use of, mental health services.

: The purpose of this program is to improve access to treatment and support services for youth and young adults, ages 16-25, who have a serious emotional disturbance (SED) or a serious mental illness (SMI), hereafter referred to as serious mental disorders. It is expected that this program will improve emotional and behavioral health functioning so that this population of youth and young adults can maximize their potential to assume adult roles and responsibilities and lead full and productive lives.Youth and young adults with SMI or SED between the ages of 16-25, including those with intellectual developmental disabilities, may not be working, in school, or in vocational and higher education programs. Some face the additional challenge of experiencing homelessness, or being in contact with the juvenile or criminal justice system, thereby increasing the likelihood of admissions to hospitals, mental health, and/or correctional facilities.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for Silvio O. Conte Centers for Basic Neuroscience or Translational Mental Health Research. The NIMH seeks teams of researchers working at different levels of analysis and employing integrative, novel, and creative experimental approaches to address high-risk, high-impact questions in basic neuroscience research, or in translational research with the primary objectives of: (a) advancing the state of the science in basic brain and behavior research that will uncover and dissect the underlying mechanisms that will ultimately provide the foundation for understanding mental disorders; (b) supporting the integration and translation of basic and clinical neuroscience research on severe mental illnesses; and/or (c) advancing our understanding of the neurobehavioral developmental mechanisms and trajectories of psychopathology that begin in childhood and adolescence. The Conte Centers program is intended to support interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research demonstrating an extraordinary level of synergy, integration, and potential for advancing the state of the field. This program is intended only for projects that could not be achieved using other, more standard grant mechanisms. The Conte Centers program also provides an opportunity to establish interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research experiences for students and post doctorates.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research grant applications focusing on identification and management of behavioral symptoms and mental health conditions in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Specific areas of interest for this funding opportunity are (1) applications to develop and validate assessment tools that reliably identify behavioral symptoms or diagnose mental health conditions in individuals with ID, and (2) applications studying the pharmacokinetics, safety and efficacy of specific psychotropic medications for treatment of behavioral symptoms or mental health conditions in individuals with ID.

NIFA requests applications for the Mental Health Research Project (MHRP) for the fiscal year FY 2017 to support the Air Force Medical Operations Agency (AFMOA) MHRP in promoting the psychological health and well being for Airmen and there families through staff development, consultation, program and resource development; program evaluation, and data tracking.The primary objective for this project is to assess, develop, and evaluate programming to treat and prevent mental health problems to support the Mental Health Division of the Air Force Medical Operations Agency (AFMOA).This work also supports the mission of the DoD-USDA Partnership for Military Families Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in 2010 by NIFA and DoD senior leadership. The goal of the MOU is "…to enhance federal interagency coordination and build capacity for partnerships and collaboration among the agencies and across public and private sectors to sustain programs and services for military service members and their families."

The purpose of this program is to (1) enhance services for all students at risk for suicide, depression, serious mental illness, and substance use disorders that can lead to school failure; (2) prevent mental and substance use disorders; (3) promote help-seeking behavior and reduce stigma; and (4) improve the identification and treatment of at-risk students so that students can successfully complete their studies. The goal is to assist campuses in developing a comprehensive, collaborative, and well-coordinated approach to support prevention efforts and early identification and intervention activities with students at risk for suicide, serious mental illness, and/or substance related overdose or injury.

The Second Chance Act Programs are designed to help communities develop and implement comprehensive and collaborative strategies that address the challenges posed by reentry and recidivism reduction. "Reentry" is not a specific program, but rather a process that starts when an individual is initially incarcerated and ends when he or she has been successfully reintegrated in the community as a law-abiding citizen. The reentry process includes screening and assessment in a pre-release setting, the delivery of evidence-based programming in a pre-release setting, and the delivery of a variety of evidence-based programming for every program participant in a post-release setting designed to ensure that the transition from prison or jail to the community is safe and successful. The Reentry Program for Adult Offenders with Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Health Disorders is designed to improve outcomes for adults with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders through the screening and assessment of incarcerated individuals, availability of some pre-release programming, leading to the provision of appropriate evidence-based services and treatment after incarceration.

The intent of the FY14 PH/TBIRP Community Partners in Mental Health Research Award (CPMHRA) is to address Section 706 by supporting research on the causes, development, and innovative treatment of mental health, substance use disorders, TBI, and suicide prevention in members of the National Guard and Reserves, their family members, and their caregivers. The focus of the CPMHRA is on research only; proposed projects should NOT include other treatment, education, and outreach efforts. Research projects should be carried out by or in collaboration with community partners. Community partners as referenced in Section 706 are private non-profit organizations or institutions that engage in (1) research on the causes, development, and innovative treatment; (2) identifying and disseminating evidence-based treatments; and/or (3) outreach and education for mental health, substance use disorders, TBI, and suicide prevention in members of the National Guard and Reserves, their family members, and their caregivers.

Connect 4 Mental Health (C4MH) will issue four awards to U.S.-based community programs exhibiting innovative work in the four C4MH  pillars - early intervention, creative use of technology, continuity of care, and service integration (one winner in each pillar). Winners will exemplify the mission of C4MH, implementing approaches that support individuals living with serious mental illness and their families, and that also may positively impact the communities in which they live. Each of the 2014 Community Innovation Award winners will receive a $10,000 award and access to a one-on-one mentorship program featuring exemplary community-based programs with expertise in the four C4MH pillars. Winners will also be featured on the C4MH website and highlighted in future media announcements

The Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health is dedicated to changing lives by advancing the most effective and innovative approaches to group therapy education, training, research, and community outreach. To that end, the foundation is seeking research-focused applications to support group psychotherapy research that focuses on one of five clinical populations: children, the elderly, the chronically mentally ill, substance abusers, and/or significantly ill patients with marked functional impairment.

The annual award is designed to fund the development of creative initiatives that address prevention, early intervention, and/or treatment for mental and behavioral health disorders among college students. The goal of these initiatives is to reduce the risk of mental and behavioral illness and injury among college students and to enhance both individual and community health as a strategy to support student learning. One $3,500 grant will be awarded at the 2015 ACHA annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, in late May 2015.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for mechanistic research on age-related changes in emotion regulation and how they may contribute to mental disorders in middle-aged and older adults.In particular, research is sought that will advance understanding of irregularities in the integrative neural-behavioral mechanisms of emotion regulation in adult mood and anxiety disorders, and that will examine whether the irregularities are associated with typical or atypical maturational trajectories of emotion processing. If older adults who suffer episodes of affective dysregulation share the same patterns of improved emotional function with age as have been found to be typical of the older adult population in general. Research that helps to clarify whether they do or do not manifest typical emotion processing trajectories may lead to very different understanding of the irregularities involved their dysregulation.It is anticipated that such studies may identify novel targets for mental health interventions or prevention efforts, or provide clues as to which available intervention strategies might be optimally applied to normalize emotion dysregulation or to strengthen emotional resilience at particular stages of the adult life cycle.

The purpose of this program is to train doctoral health psychology students, interns, and post-doctoral residents to provide integrated, interdisciplinary, behavioral health and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and other Substance Use Disorder (SUD) 2 prevention and treatment services in high need and high demand areas. The program also supports faculty development of health service psychology. For purposes of this NOFO, high need and high demand areas are identified by two defined sources: o County of experiential training site location has less than 10 licensed psychologists per 100,000 population as found in the APA County Level Analysis of US Licensed Psychologists o Experiential training site is located in a Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) or that are Facility Mental HPSAs with a score of 16 or above as found in the HPSA Find Tool. The overarching goal of the program is to prepare and build capacity of the doctoral health psychology workforce, to provide mental/behavioral health care, including OUD and other SUD prevention and treatment services, in high need and high demand areas.
