The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. Act as sources of injury and/or violence prevention and control information for their constituents and stakeholders at the local, state, tribal, national, and global levels.

Announcement supports applied and translational research to advance the development of knowledge and materiel products for rehabilitation and restoration of function following TBI. PIs should explain how their work will inform the development, refinement, and/or revision of existing standards of care, clinical recommendations, or guidelines. TBI is defined as being caused by (1) a direct blow or impact to the head, (2) a penetrating head injury, or (3) an exposure to external forces such as blast waves that disrupt the function of the brain. Not all blows to the head or exposure to external forces result in a TBI. The severity of TBI may range from "mild," a brief change in mental status or consciousness, to "severe," an extended period of unconsciousness or confusion after the injury. Definitions of TBI severity can be found in Table 1 of the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Concussion-Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The FY17/18 PH/TBIRP CTRR-CRA supports clinical research but not clinical trials. Supported research can include observational research studies. The Clinical Research Award (CTRR-CRA) is intended to support clinical research focused on understanding the clinical sequelae and mechanisms of recovery associated with TBI and TBI rehabilitation interventions. The overarching goals of this award are to address TBI-related impairments and deficits including sensory, sensorimotor, and cognitive dysfunction to (1) develop and validate rehabilitation outcome measures; (2) define and evaluate mechanisms of injury progression or recovery associated with rehabilitation interventions; and (3) improve clinician-driven assessment strategies to guide return-to-duty decision making.

In the United States, nearly 192,900 people die from injuries and violence each year that is approximately 1 person every 3 minutes. More than 3 million people are hospitalized and 27 million people treated in emergency rooms as a result of injuries and violence each year. Injuries and violence are so common that we often accept them as just part of life. To address IVP, CDC supports programmatic, policy, communication and evaluation activities to build capacity for injury and violence expertise at the state, local and community levels to prevent related morbidity and mortality.

The purpose of this FOA is to: 1) strengthen violence and injury prevention public health infrastructure through the enhancement of state/local health department and partner staff competencies in program planning, policy, evaluation and developing and sustaining collaborative partnerships and 2) increase the adoption and implementation of public health violence and injury prevention policy and program strategies based on the best available evidence. This cooperative agreement will support the activities of all state and territorial health department violence and injury prevention programs and the broader violence and injury prevention program at CDC.

The National Center for Injury and Prevention Control (NCIPC) intends to provide support and 75% "protected time" for an intensive, supervised (mentored) career development experience to develop new researchers in the fields of opioid overdose prevention and cross-cutting violence prevention. The intent is to provide resources to young investigators so they can grow their skills by developing and conducting research efforts needed to address NCIPC Research Priorities (https://www.cdc.gov/injury/researchpriorities/index.html), with the potential to investigate new and emerging public health issues. Investigators focused on opioid overdose prevention must propose a research project to investigate risk factors for and strategies to prevent opioid overdose. Investigators may address one of the research gaps identified in the NCIPC Research Priorities (https://www.cdc.gov/injury/researchpriorities/index.html).

The National Research Action Plan (NRAP) responding to Executive Order 13625, Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families (August 31, 2012), lays out a framework to ensure that Government funding agencies work together to further our knowledge and diagnostic/therapeutic capabilities with regard to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), TBI, suicide, and related injuries by following longitudinal cohorts of Service members and Veterans. The DoD and VA ORD meet this directive through continued collaboration on and coordination of research efforts in the areas of TBI and PTSD. Additionally, recommendations from the DoD Blast Injury Research Program Coordinating Office's November 2015 International State of the Science Meeting (Does Repeated Blast- Related Trauma Contribute to the Development of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)?) included pursuing longitudinal studies to evaluate links between blast-related TBI with CTE. While a number of longitudinal efforts are ongoing, the DoD and VA seek to pursue a mechanism to collaboratively streamline and continue longitudinal studies of mTBI in active duty and Veteran populations. The objective of this effort is to solicit a single Consortium of a large longitudinal study and supporting sub-studies to analyze a large TBI cohort to include Service members, Veterans, and relevant populations.

The purpose of this funding is to support research that informs the link between public health and clinical medicine in injury prevention by: 1) developing the evidence base for clinical preventive services in the area of prescription drug overdose and 2) investigating models for partnership between hospitals and state/local health departments in designing community health needs assessments and improvement plans that incorporate injury prevention.

The Paralyzed Veterans of America Education Foundation, a grantmaking organization of Paralyzed Veterans of America, seeks to fund innovative educational projects that enhance the quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) and/or that increase the knowledge and effectiveness of health professionals in the SCI/D community. The foundation generally supports five types of projects: 1) Consumer, caregiver, and community education demonstration projects that seek to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease; 2) Professional development and education programs that improve the knowledge and competencies of professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community, or fellowship/traineeship programs for professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community; 3) Research utilization and dissemination projects that translate research findings into practice; 4) Assistive technology demonstration projects that improve the identification, selection, and use of assistive devices by people with SCI/D; and 5) Conferences and symposia designed to provide education and opportunities for collaboration among members of the SCI/D community.

This funding opportunity announcement from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) invites applications for a National Center of Excellence for the Prevention of Childhood Agricultural Injury. Applicants are expected to propose multi-disciplinary approaches to develop partnerships for implementing prevention and intervention activities and to serve as a leader in research translation and research-to-practice for the protection of children in agricultural environments throughout the United States. Applicants must describe the occupational health and safety burden(s) addressed in their proposals. In addition, they must link the need for the proposed research and related activities to the planned outputs and outcomes that will help address or alleviate the burdens described. Applicants should also describe the anticipated impacts and potential outcomes of the proposed research and related activities that will occur during the 5-year project period and beyond.

The purpose of this funding is to support etiologic and effectiveness research on driving while polysubstance impaired. Specifically, research is solicited to identify risk and protective factors associated with polysubstance impaired driving and its associated deaths and injuries, or to identify effective interventions to prevent polysubstance impaired driving and its associated deaths and injuries. Polysubstance impaired driving includes driving while impaired by alcohol plus at least one other drug, such as marijuana or opioids. Research Priority #1 is to conduct etiologic research to inform our understanding of the characteristics of and risk and protective factors associated with impaired driving when alcohol plus other drugs (such as marijuana or prescription or illicit opioids) are involved. Research Priority #2 is to conduct effectiveness research to evaluate interventions most effective at preventing driving while impaired by alcohol plus other drugs (such as marijuana or prescription or illicit opioids).

The Research Project Grant (R01) supports a discrete, specified, circumscribed project in scientific areas that represent the investigators’ specific interests and competencies and that fall within the mission of NIOSH. Applicants must concisely describe the occupational health burden addressed in their proposal and must link the need for the proposed research activities to planned outputs that will help alleviate this burden. Applicants should clearly articulate the anticipated impacts of the proposed research, both during the project period and beyond

The intent of the PFCRA is to target the emerging need to provide extended trauma care prior to reaching a location that can provide definitive hemorrhage and contamination control. Trauma care during this period is often called "Prolonged Field Care" (PFC). Traditionally, improvements to the trauma care system have focused on shortening evacuation times from the point of injury to the first surgical site. However, in future conflicts or mass trauma events, it is anticipated that the initial evacuation time, and thus initial surgical hemorrhage and contamination control, may be delayed for hours or days.This challenge also requires research to develop new solutions to provide for prolonged Damage Control Resuscitation (pDCR) including: support for medical providers in the out-of-hospital setting (point of injury, austere environment, or en route care) with limited resources; understanding the physiologic impact of pDCR; and techniques to mitigate the negative effects of delayed surgical intervention. The research and solutions must be focused on patient-level interventions and outcomes, rather than the broader trauma system. However, proposed research and solutions should consider the entire continuum of trauma care.The JPC-6/CCCRP has identified three overarching Focus Areas for funding under this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity.

Established in 2002, the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation has evolved into the largest private funder of spinal cord injury research, rehabilitation, and clinical training in the United States. The foundation funds scientific research (preclinical, translational, clinical, and psychosocial); opportunity and independence programs; scholarships for students with SCI; postdoctoral and SCI medicine fellowships; and other projects designed to support the SCI community in the United States and Canada. To advance this mission, the foundation has issued a Request for Proposals for its 2019 Psychosocial Research grants cycle. A goal of the funding is to identify and prioritize critical gaps in the psychosocial field and develop more effective interventions aimed at improving the health of individuals with SCI across the lifespan. Funding categories range from postdoctoral fellowships to pilot and demonstration project grants. Award amounts will range between $150,000 and $400,000. To be eligible, applicants must be a nonprofit organization that conducts research on the psychological and social factors that affect health, functioning, and quality of life for people living with spinal cord injuries.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Grants Programs Directorate is responsible for the implementation and administration of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The Grant Programs Directorate administers the Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant Program as part of the AFG Program. The purpose of the FP&S Grant Program is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards by assisting fire prevention programs and supporting firefighter health and safety research and development. FP&S Grants are offered to support projects in two activities: (1) activities designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate the incidence of death, injuries, and property damage caused by fire and fire-related hazards ("Fire Prevention and Safety Activity") and (2) research and development activities aimed at improving firefighter safety, health, or wellness through research and development that reduces firefighter fatalities and injuries ("Firefighter Safety Research and Development Activity"). The program guidance document provides potential applicants with the details of the requirements, processing, and evaluation of an application for financial assistance for both of these activity areas.
