The Rivkin Center Scientific Scholar Awards - 0 views

    Founded in 1996, the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research provides funding for multiple efforts, including funding for innovative research pilot studies, scholar grants to up-and-coming investigators to encourage their careers in ovarian cancer research, public early detection screening for ovarian cancer, and nationally and internationally attended research symposia focused on ovarian cancer. To advance this mission, the center has issued a Call for Applications for its 2018 Scientific Scholar Awards. Through the program, the center will award grants of up $120,000 over two years to promising laboratory and clinical scientists interested in pursuing a career as an independent investigator in ovarian cancer research. Funds are for direct costs only; institutional overhead and indirect costs are not covered by the award. Eligible applicants must have an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree with career goals focused on ovarian cancer, and clinicians must have completed their residency. All applicants should be at the postdoc/fellow, instructor, research assistant, or assistant professor level, with no more than three to four years in any of these positions. Established outstanding scientists without prior focus in ovarian cancer but looking to focus in this area are also encouraged to apply.

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the planning and development of translational research programs focused upon cancer health disparities research. The P20 grants supported by this FOA are expected to expand into comprehensive translational research programs focused upon cancer health disparities and ultimately compete for P50 awards under the umbrella of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) "Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs)". Each P20 Program proposed must include the following components: Research Program (at least two translational research projects are required); Administrative Core; Shared Resource Facility (Biospecimen/Pathology Core is required); and Developmental Research Program.     Cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, resulting in approximately 480,000 premature deaths and 16 million smoking-related illnesses. Cigarette smoking can lead to increased cardiovascular disease, multiple types of cancer, pulmonary disease, adverse reproductive outcomes, and the exacerbation of chronic health conditions. Annual costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses amount to nearly $280 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity. Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among U.S. youth and young adults has increased considerably, growing 900% among high school students from 2011 to 2015. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 1.5 million new diagnoses and over 550,000 deaths each year. Commercial Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer and cancer deaths. It can cause not only lung cancer but also cancers of the mouth and throat, voice box, esophagus, stomach, kidney, pancreas, liver, bladder, cervix, colon and rectum, and a type of leukemia.

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to reduce the burden of cancer and improve the quality of cancer care in rural areas among low-income and/or underserved populations. The FOA encourages two types of applications: 1) observational research that includes pilot testing of intervention to understand and address predictors of cancer care/treatment and outcomes in rural low-income and/or underserved populations; or 2) intervention research to address known predictors of cancer care/treatment and outcomes in rural low-income and/or underserved populations. Specifically, the focus for observational studies (with pilot testing) is understanding and addressing the predictive and/or mediating role of social determinants of health, barriers to care, and treatment; and the focus for interventional research is on addressing quality of care related to cancer diagnosis, treatment and/or survivorship.     Research progress in the treatment for diseases of the exocrine pancreas [chronic pancreatitis (CP), pancreatogenic diabetes mellitus, and pancreatic cancer] has been hampered by the disorders' heterogeneity, the limitations of previous small cross-sectional studies, the inability to safely obtain pancreatic tissue for discovery, and the lack of structured epidemiology tools, genetic testing, and biomarker development and validation. Mechanism-based research of these diseases has suffered from the lack of systematically collected clinical measures in longitudinal cohort studies linked with biospecimens. Given the increasing incidence and prevalence of CP and its association to the development of pancreatic cancer, its complications, high mortality rate, and associated health care cost, the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Cancer Institute established in 2015 the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer (CPDPC) Consortium as multidisciplinary teams composed of members from the Clinical Centers and Coordination and Data Management Center to undertake a comprehensive clinical, epidemiological, and biological characterization of patients with CP (including adults and children with recurrent acute pancreatitis) to develop treatments and gain insight into the pathophysiology of CP and its sequela: chronic pain, pancreatic exocrine and endocrine insufficiency, T3cDM, and the diabetes/pancreatic cancer association. To be eligible, applicants must have a doctoral degree in a related field and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. In addition, at the start of the grant term on July 1, 2018, applicants must hold a tenure-eligible appointment at the level of assistant professor; have held this appointment for no more than three years; and work at an academic, medical, or research institution anywhere in the world.
