CDC announces the availability of Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 funds to implement CDC-RFA-DP18-1809: High Obesity Program. The growing body of evidence suggests that obesity is one of the most significant challenges facing the public health system. If this continues, obesity and the many complications it causes will increase the disease burden in the United States. Poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity affect overall health and are significant risk factors for obesity and other chronic diseases. Obesity in the United States affects 78.6 million (35%) adults and 12.7 million (17%) children and accounts for approximately $147 billion in annual health care costs. The burden of obesity and other chronic diseases negatively affects our nation's businesses, economy, and military readiness and is higher among certain racial/ethnic populations and geographical locations. This five-year program provides resources for land grant universities to leverage community extension services to implement evidence-based strategies that increase access to places that provide healthier foods and safe and accessible places for physical activity in counties with an adult obesity rate of over 40%.

The mission of the NORC program is to serve as a key component of the NIDDK-supported research effort to advance nutrition and obesity research. The NORCs promote new discoveries and enhance scientific progress through support of cutting-edge basic, clinical, and translational research in nutrition science and obesity with the ultimate goal of improving public health. 

This Challenge Area Focuses on the societal challenge to end obesity among children, the number one nutrition-related problem in the US. Food is an integral part of the process that leads to obesity and USDA has a unique responsibility for the food system in the United States. This program is designed to achieve the long-term outcome of reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents 2-19 years. The Childhood Obesity Prevention Program supports Multi-function Integrated Research, Education, and/or Extension Projects and Food and Agricultural Science Enhancement (FASE) Grants.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to foster the advancement of the research mission of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, NIDDK by soliciting research concepts that for pilot and feasibility clinical study proposals would need further assessment of identified protocol operational challenges would enhance operational feasibility of achieving successful completion of a subsequent larger clinical study; or for clinical translational science proposals, promote exploratory and novel science through the use of human subjects. The following studies will not be supported by this FOA: those that have obesity as a component of the study proposal (please refer to the Office of Extramural Research Grants and Funding to search for multiple obesity related Funding Opportunity Announcements at https://grants.nih.gov/grants/oer.htm); and translational studies that utilize animal models.

The goal of this program is to facilitate research that explores innovative hypotheses through the use of existing data sets or data, for which the primary goal is data analysis and not preparation/presentation of data.

CDC announces the availability of fiscal year 2018 (FY18) funds to implement DP18-1813 Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH). This 5-year initiative is to improve health, prevent chronic diseases, and reduce health disparities among racial and ethnic populations with the highest risk, or burden, of chronic disease, specifically for African Americans/Blacks, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaska Natives, by: Supporting culturally tailored interventions to address the preventable health behaviors of tobacco use, poor nutrition and physical inactivity Linking community and clinical efforts to increase access to health care and preventive care programs at the community level Supporting implementation, evaluation and dissemination of practice- and evidence-based strategies on the four topic areas of tobacco, nutrition, physical activity, and community-clinical collaborations that ultimately lead to reduced health disparities in chronic conditions of hypertension, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity Funding will support recipients that: Have a history of successfully working with an established community coalition to address issues relating to health or other disparities. Select strategies that address the health disparities in the community based on results from a community health needs assessment process. Have organizational capacity to effectively, efficiently, and immediately implement locally tailored evidence- and practice-based strategies

Healthy Eating Research is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation national program that supports research on policy, systems, and environmental strategies with strong potential to promote the health and well-being of children at a population level. Specifically, HER aims to help all children achieve optimal nutrition and a healthy weight. HER grantmaking focuses on children and adolescents from birth to 18, and their families, with a priority on lower-income and racial and ethnic minority populations that are at-risk of poor nutrition and obesity.

The Aetna Foundation Regional Grants Program - GoLocal: Cultivating Healthy Communities - funds community wellness initiatives aligned with our Healthy Eating and Active Living focus area in our designated funding locations. Grants will support local initiatives that promote eating fresh fruits and vegetables and being physically active, which can help to prevent obesity and many chronic health conditions. Grants will target underserved, low-income and minority communities where healthy food can be difficult to buy, and where social and environmental factors may limit people's ability to be physically active. Types of Projects We Seek to Support Community-based nutrition education and exercise programs for children and families Efforts to increase the availability or affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables Programs that help families to select and prepare healthy foods on a limited budget Community gardening and urban farming activities Innovative approaches to making physical activity accessible, affordable and fun (e.g., digital solutions) We will give priority consideration to applications that focus on healthy eating and active living through a racial and ethnic health equity lens.

The Foundation encourages submission of applications from Academy Members that explore lifestyle interventions which can reduce the risk of development of childhood overweight and obesity by focusing on nutrition and physical activity.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide support for New Investigators from backgrounds nationally underrepresented in biomedical research to conduct small research projects in the scientific mission areas of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). The scientific mission areas of the Institutes and Office are: NIDDK -diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, digestive diseases, hepatology, obesity, nutrition, kidney, urology, or hematology; NIMH factors contributing to mental disorders, the trajectories of mental disorders, pre-emption and treatment of mental disorders, identify and improve interventions for mental illness; and ODS all types of research in which the primary emphasis is the investigation of dietary supplements and/or their ingredients.

The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support translational research that provides strong justification for later-phase therapeutics discovery and development efforts in health-related outcomes relevant to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. This includes outcomes relevant to obesity, diabetes and related aspects of endocrinology and metabolism, digestive diseases, liver diseases, nutrition, kidney and urological diseases, and hematology. Fewer than half of children ages 6 to 11 meet the consensus recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate physical activity per day. Research shows that children who are active in early childhood are less likely to be obese. They engage in fewer risky behaviors than non-active youth as they move from youth to adolescence, and are more likely to go to college. The Youth Engagement in Sports (YES) initiative seeks to create opportunities for sports participation where none or few currently exist; particularly in racial/ethnic minority, low income and disadvantaged communities. OMH and the President's Council on Sports Fitness and Nutrition will collaborate to develop and implement the YES initiative in support of Executive Order 13265 to increase children's participation in youth sports. The YES initiative will support collaborative partnerships, led by Institutions of Higher Education, that include: community recreation groups, sports organizations, public health entities, local schools, technology/media entities, police athletic leagues, and parents.
