The purpose of the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and protected time (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. Although all of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this support mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, some ICs use the K01 award for individuals who propose to train in a new field or for individuals who have had a hiatus in their research career because of illness or pressing family circumstances. Other ICs offer separate K01 FOAs intended to increase research workforce diversity. This Funding Opportunity Announcement is designed specifically for applicants proposing to lead basic science experimental studies involving humans, referred to in NOT-OD-18-212 as prospective basic science studies involving human participants. These studies fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind. Studies conducted with specific applications toward processes or products in mind should submit under the companion Clinical Trials Required FOA.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the Office of Population Affairs (OPA), invites applications from public or private nonprofit entities to conduct research that will lead to feasible and effective strategies to increase access to quality Title X family planning services among hard to reach populations or provide family planning services in resource limited areas, as well as among individuals who misuse opioids and/or other substances, including those with substance use disorders (SUDs). Applicants should address only ONE priority area per application, but an entity may submit multiple applications. If an applicant submits more than one application for the same focus area, then only the last application submitted for that focus area will be considered. Priority areas for these research grants are as follows: 1) Innovative family planning clinical service delivery models that can be used to increase access to quality Title X family planning services among hard to reach populations or provide Title X family planning services in resource limited areas. 2) Meeting the family planning needs of women and men who misuse opioids and/or other substances, including those with substance use disorders (SUDs), so they can prevent or achieve pregnancy when desired. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications for the next five-year cycle of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), the leading nationally representative, longitudinal data resource in the US for research on trends, dynamics, and disparities in late-life disability, and for studies of the social and economic consequences of late-life disability for individuals, families and society, including caregiving and end-of-life issues. NHATS has conducted seven annual rounds of data collection to date (an eighth round is in process) and is linked to the separately funded National Study of Caregiving (NSOC). The goals of the next cycle are to: 1) Continue the current structure and design elements of NHATS; 2) Permit studies of long-term trends in disability prevalence; 3) Enrich measurement of cognitive capacity; 4) Enhance measurement of physical activity and sedentary behavior; 5) Continue linkages with administrative records; and 6) Augment data dissemination and user support.

Specific targeted areas of research include biobehavioral studies that incorporate multiple factors that influence child health disparities such as biological (e.g., genetics, cellular, organ systems), lifestyle factors, environmental (e.g., physical and family environments) social (e.g., peers), economic, institutional, and cultural and family influences; studies that target the specific health promotion needs of children with a known health condition and/or disability; and studies that test and evaluate the comparative effectiveness of health promotion interventions conducted in traditional and nontraditional settings.

The National Research Action Plan (NRAP) responding to Executive Order 13625, Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families (August 31, 2012), lays out a framework to ensure that Government funding agencies work together to further our knowledge and diagnostic/therapeutic capabilities with regard to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), TBI, suicide, and related injuries by following longitudinal cohorts of Service members and Veterans. The DoD and VA ORD meet this directive through continued collaboration on and coordination of research efforts in the areas of TBI and PTSD. Additionally, recommendations from the DoD Blast Injury Research Program Coordinating Office's November 2015 International State of the Science Meeting (Does Repeated Blast- Related Trauma Contribute to the Development of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)?) included pursuing longitudinal studies to evaluate links between blast-related TBI with CTE. While a number of longitudinal efforts are ongoing, the DoD and VA seek to pursue a mechanism to collaboratively streamline and continue longitudinal studies of mTBI in active duty and Veteran populations. The objective of this effort is to solicit a single Consortium of a large longitudinal study and supporting sub-studies to analyze a large TBI cohort to include Service members, Veterans, and relevant populations.

Projects must address one or more of the FY19 SCIRP IIRA Focus Areas. * Relevance to Military Health: Projects should be relevant to spinal cord-injured military Service members, Veterans, and/or their family members and caregivers. Established in 1950 in Rye, New York, by a group of families deeply impacted by muscular dystrophy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association today works to drive scientific research and innovation in care to serve those impacted by neuromuscular disease. In support of that mission, MDA is accepting applications for its clinical research program. Through the program, grants of up to three years in duration will be awarded to researchers focused on the understanding and treatment of neuromuscular disease, including natural history studies, clinical biomarker studies, outcome measure studies, non-interventional clinical research studies, and clinical trials of existing, approved, or repurposed drugs or non-drug interventions. The program also supports clinician-scientists in training, research networks, and travel costs to conferences. The DeGregorio Family Foundation for Gastric and Esophageal Cancer seeks to promote and facilitate collaborative research on the pathogenesis, early diagnosis, and treatment of upper gastrointestinal malignancies. To that end, the foundation has issued a Request for Proposals for its ninth annual funding opportunity for gastroesophageal malignancies. Through the RFP, grants of up to $250,000 will be awarded in support of innovative, high-quality translational and bench research that improves the understanding of the biology of these diseases, identification of potential novel therapeutic targets, and/or the development and evaluation of novel biomarkers for early diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage research applications to develop and pilot test the effectiveness and implementation of family navigator models designed to promote early access, engagement and coordination of mental health treatment and services for children and adolescents who are experiencing early symptoms of mental health problems. For the purposes of this FOA, NIMH defines a family navigator model as a health care professional or paraprofessional whose role is to deploy a set of strategies designed to rapidly engage youth and families in needed treatment and services, work closely with the family and other involved treatment and service providers to optimize care and monitor the trajectory of mental health symptoms and outcomes over time. Applicants are encouraged to develop and pilot test the navigator model's ability to promote early access, engagement and coordination of mental health treatment and services for children and adolescents as soon as symptoms are detected. Of interest are navigator models that coordinate needed care strategies, determine the "personalized match" to the level of needed service amount, frequency and intensity, and harness novel technologies to track and monitor the trajectory of clinical, functional and behavioral progress toward achieving intended services outcomes.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for a Center for Identification and Study of Individuals with Atypical Diabetes Mellitus (U54). The purpose of this Center is to: foster the study of individuals with rare/atypical forms of diabetes mellitus; identify and analyze phenotypic and genotypic defects that may provide insights into more common, heterogeneous forms of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the general population; and develop a community resource to advance research in this area through the collection and dissemination of data and samples for access by the broad research community. To achieve this goal, the Center should support the following primary research endeavors: (1) develop a process for identifying and studying individuals/families with rare and uncharacterized forms of diabetes and (2) create and manage a database and biospecimen repository of rare/atypical forms of diabetes for use by the broader research community in future analyses.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide competitive grant funds for regional partnership grants (RPGs) to improve the well-being of children affected by substance abuse. These targeted grants will be awarded to regional partnerships that provide through interagency collaboration and integration of programs and services, activities and services that are designed to increase the well-being of, improve permanency outcomes for, and enhance the safety of children who are in out-of-home placements or are at risk of entering out-of-home placements as a result of a parent's or caretaker's substance abuse. Applicants are expected to have a collaborative structure in place that is capable of building a region's capacity to meet a broad range of needs for families involved with both substance abuse treatment and the child welfare system. Per the legislative requirements, RPGs are required to select and report on performance indicators and evaluation measures to increase the knowledge that can be gained from the program. Partnerships will: Use specific, well-defined, and evidence-based programs that are also trauma-informed and targeted to the identified population; Conduct an evaluation that is sufficiently rigorous to contribute to the evidence base on service delivery, outcomes and costs associated with the project's chosen interventions; and Participate in the national cross-site evaluation, which includes an implementation and partnership study, an outcomes study, and an impact study.

The Fahs-Beck Fund for Research and Experimentation is accepting applications to support behavioral or psychological research studies based in the United States or Canada. The overall goal of the BHSA is to advance behavioral health cancer science and fill gaps in the understanding of survivorship, including investigations into the psychological health and well- being of those affected by cancer (e.g., patients, family members). This may include investigations into studies that improve mental health and/or cancer related outcomes in defined populations. Studies also may assess the relationship(s) between behavioral and social functioning in relation to cancer initiation, progression, detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. Applications may propose behavioral science that examines quality of life studies, decision making and/or cognitive function research, development and testing of educational interventions, and symptom management (e.g., toxicity of treatment, palliative care, psychological distress and anxiety). The Lesbian Health Fund (LHF), a program of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality, was established in 1992 to define, study, and educate lesbians and their health care providers about lesbian health issues. LHF's mission is to improve the health of lesbians, other sexual minority women (SMW) and their families through research. This notice solicits applications for the R40 Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Field-Initiated Innovative Research Studies (FIRST) Program. The purpose of the MCH FIRST Program grant is to advance the health and wellbeing of MCH populations by supporting innovative, applied, and translational intervention[1] research studies on critical issues affecting MCH populations.
