    EPA-ORD seeks applications from eligible entities to enter into a cooperative agreement with EPA that will provide training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students on-site at ORD's Ground Water and Ecosystems Research Division (GWERD) research facilities located in Ada, Oklahoma.  It is envisioned that the training program will increase both the effectiveness and number of future environmental scientists. The training received under the mentorship of EPA scientists will complement the trainees' academic coursework. The recipient will be responsible for ensuring that the training projects are supportive of the trainees' academic training.  Some appropriate fields of study for trainees include, but are not limited to, environmental science, water policy, chemistry, engineering, computer science, ecology, and physical and biological sciences.

NARS Campus Research Challenge | Monitoring & Assessment | US EPA - 0 views

    The National Aquatic Resource Survey (NARS) Campus Research Challenge gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to use NARS data to conduct further scientific research and analysis. This challenge is intended to encourage external, innovative research and information development in support of enhanced water management at multiple scales. EPA will award up to $50,000 in two phases with prizes of $2,000 in phase one and $5,000 in phase two. In addition, winners will receive national recognition for their university, students and project by being featured on the National Aquatic Resource Surveys Campus Research Challenge website.  Winners may be offered opportunities to speak on webcasts, at meetings, or at other events.

    This notice announces the availability of funds and solicits proposals from eligible entities, including nonprofit organizations, to deliver Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training programs that recruit, train, and place local, unemployed and under-employed residents with the skills needed to secure full-time employment in the environmental field. While Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training Grants require training in brownfield assessment and/or cleanup activities, these grants also require that Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training be provided to all individuals being trained. EPA encourages applicants to develop their curricula based on local labor market assessments and employers' hiring needs, while also delivering comprehensive training that results in graduates securing multiple certifications.

    The Simons Foundation is accepting Letters of Intent for its Simons Early Career Investigator in Marine Microbial Ecology and Evolution Awards. Microbes inhabit and sustain all habitats on Earth. In the oceans, microbes capture solar energy, catalyze biogeochemical transformations of important elements, produce and consume greenhouse gases, and provide the base of the food web. The purpose of the program is to help launch the careers of outstanding investigators who use quantitative approaches to advance our understanding of marine microbial ecology and evolution. Investigators with backgrounds in different fields or with an interest in modeling or theory are encouraged to apply. Grants will be for $180,000 per year for a period of three years. Appropriate expenses include salary support for the investigator and postdoctoral and graduate research assistants, travel, equipment, supplies, and other research expenses. To be eligible, applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and have carried out research in an independent position (tenure-track or equivalent) for at least one year and no more than eight years (start date between November 2009 and November 2016). In addition, applicants must currently hold a tenure-track or tenured position or equivalent in a U.S. or Canadian institution. Letters of Interest must be received no later than November 6, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals by February 1, 2018.

    It is NASA's intent to update these foci and compete this element on an annual basis to best address scientific and programmatic priorities: 1. High-End Computing for ESI: Research advancing the use of High-End Computing (HEC) resources to answer specific questions in solid-Earth science. This subsection welcomes proposals addressing observational network design and augmentation, automated processing of large datasets, and advanced analysis and simulation. Proposals that demonstrate a clear need and robust plan for use of NASA HEC resources are especially encouraged. 2.     The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in Alaskan carbon dioxide and methane stock and flux rates within aquatic ecosystems. This funding will support a graduate student and other resources and materials needed to verify biogeochemistry models, simulate land and aquatic ecosystem changes, and develop research methods, and conduct regional simulations of greenhouse gas emissions.
