The consequences of climate variability and change are becoming more immediate and profound than previously anticipated. Over recent decades, the world has witnessed the onset of prolonged droughts on several continents, increased frequency of floods, loss of agricultural and forest productivity, degraded ocean and permafrost ecosystems, global sea level rise and the rapid retreat of ice sheets and glaciers, loss of arctic sea ice, and changes in ocean currents. These important impacts highlight that climate variability and change can have significant effects on decadal and shorter time scales, with significant consequences for plant, animal, human, and physical systems. The EaSM funding opportunity enables interagency cooperation on one of the most pressing problems of the millennium: climate change and??how it is likely to affect our world. It allows the partner agencies -- National Science Foundation (NSF) and??U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) -- to combine resources to identify and fund the most meritorious and highest-impact projects that support their respective missions, while??avoiding duplication of effort and fostering collaboration between agencies and the investigators they support.This interdisciplinary scientific challenge calls for the development and application of next-generation Earth System Models that include coupled and interactive representations of such??components as ocean and atmospheric currents, agricultural working lands and forests,?? biogeochemistry, atmospheric chemistry,?? the water cycle and land ice.?? This solicitation seeks to attract scientists from the disciplines of geosciences, agricultural sciences, mathematics and statistics. Successful proposals will develop intellectual excitement in the participating disciplinary communities and engage diverse interdisciplinary teams with sufficient breadth to achieve the scientific objectives. 

The NOAA Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) invites applications for the establishment of a North Atlantic Regional Cooperative Institute (CI). The proposed CI will serve a critical function at the juncture of the interdependent global and regional observing systems in the North Atlantic Ocean and those of the Northeast U.S. Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (NEUS LME). In so doing, the Institute will link basin-scale climate observations to ecosystem-scale monitoring, assessments, and decision making. Broad scale climate observations will also be integrated into to the Global Ocean Observation System. The intent of this CI is to expand and improve our ability to collect, deliver, and use ocean information to study the effect of climate change on various spatial scales including regions, LMEs, and the Nation.

Projects must be designed to advance understanding of the impacts of or mitigating strategies for climate change. This may include but is not limited to understanding the impacts of climate change on water resources and natural resource preservation, tracking and predicting (human or animal) migration patterns based on changing weather conditions, developing models to analyze and improve crop or livestock resilience and yields in regions with extreme weather conditions, and more.

This program was created to ensure that the National Climate Change andWildlife Science Center is responsive to the research and management needs of Federal and State agencies to provide science and technical support regarding the impacts of climate change in fish, wildlife, plants and ecological processes. National coordination of research and modeling at regional centers will ensure uniformity of downscaling and forecasting models and standardized information to support management of fish and wildlife resources and regional partnership collaborations. The ClimateScience Centers will provide access to the expertise at cooperating universities and supports the mission of the Climate Science CenterProgram.

Rare, Conservation International, National Geographic, The Nature Conservancy, The United Nations Development Programme, and the World Wildlife Fund have teamed up to launch The Solution Search Contest: Climate Change Needs Behavior Change. This contest is designed to reward successful strategies for helping consumers reduce their carbon footprint through behavior change. The contest is open to all organizations worldwide who have a proven solution in working with people to adopt climate-friendly behaviors. The focus is on sustainable solutions that could be replicated by other communities and can continue into the future. Two grand prizes of $25,000 will be awarded, in addition to a prize of $5,000 given to the best entry received by June 1, 2018. Finalists will also receive support to attend a capacity building workshop and the awards ceremony in Washington, DC. As a priority initiative under the PACE umbrella, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Government of India signed an agreement to establish the Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Center (JCERDC) on November 4, 2010. The JCERDC is designed to promote clean energy innovation by teams of scientists and engineers from India and the United States.

The Atmospheric System Research Program (ASR) in the Climate and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD), Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), supports research on key cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and radiative transfer processes that has the potential to improve the accuracy of regional and global climate models. The ASR program hereby announces its interest in research grant applications for observational, data analysis, and/or modeling studies that use data from CESD, including the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility and the ASR program, to improve understanding and model representation of convective cloud processes, boundary layer cloud processes, and secondary organic aerosol processes, and to pursue ASR-relevant research using observations from recent ARM field campaigns.

This agreement provides for the transfer of funds from the National Park Service to Colorado Natural Heritage Program of Colorado State University for support in developing and applying sound science to identify, inform, implement, and evaluate the application of climate change adaptation strategies across the U.S. national park service system. Supporting and tracking adaptation requires knowledge and expertise in scientific information gathering and synthesis, database and data management, and climate data acquisition, management, analysis, visualization, and presentation. The scope of work required to achieve the objectives includes database management and data analysis, visualization, and presentation, and additional and supporting work will include literature searches, reviews, and syntheses, as well as help preparing presentations and other science-based products.

Park Service units (Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore). The aim of the work is to provide information useful for the consideration of fire as a management tool and to provide some baseline evidence regarding past climate variability and the potential impacts of future climate variations. Additionally, baseline evidence of forest compositional and structural change over time could be considered to better understand the trajectories of vegetation patterns in light of past landscape history, including the role of past fires. STATEMENT OF WORK The University of Minnesota staff will develop fire history for Apostle Islands locations and Sleeping Bear Dunes locations by collecting cross sections and partial cross sections from remnant logs, stumps, and snags in forest stands. Once data is collected, a field sampling summary will be prepared for both sites. After data is collected, during the academic year 2017-2018, samples will be processed, information will be compiled, samples will be cross-dated, and relevant literature, traditional ecological knowledge, and ethnographic information will be compiled in cooperation with Park Service personnel. The fire history will then be evaluated in light of past and future climate conditions and final reports prepared.

The purpose of the program is to conduct research utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the complex relationships among weather, climate, human health and ecosystems; and training the next generation of scientists in these complex, yet interconnected areas; thus, ultimately increasing novel and practical applications of public health and climate science for the prevention of disease and protection of public health.

The goal of the Water Sustainability and Climate (WSC) solicitation is to enhance the understanding and predict the interactions between the water system and land use changes (including agriculture, managed forest and rangeland systems), the built environment, ecosystem function and services and climate change/variability through place-based research and integrative models. Studies of the water system using models and/or observations at specific sites, singly or in combination, that allow for spatial and temporal extrapolation to other regions, as well as integration across the different processes in that system are encouraged, especially to the extent that they advance the development of theoretical frameworks and predictive understanding.

The overarching purpose of the program is to help create and train the next generation of leading researchers needed for climate studies. Anticipating the large amounts of data that was gathered from NOAA efforts, such as TOGA and TOGA COARE field programs, the research community required the attention of an enlarged workforce here and abroad. In a larger context, it was necessary to attract new PhD's to the community in order to establish the seeds of scientific leadership needed in the field of climate and global change research. 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing research to improve understanding of the effects of climate change on indoor air quality and the resulting health effects. EPA is interested in supporting research that will explore the anticipated effects of climate change on indoor air quality directly through a variety of mechanisms, and indirectly through adaptations in building use and design. This solicitation provides the opportunity for the submission of applications for projects that may involve human subjects research.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing research to improve understanding of the effects of climate change on indoor air quality and the resulting health effects. EPA is interested in supporting research that will explore the anticipated effects of climate change on indoor air quality directly through a variety of mechanisms, and indirectly through adaptations in building use and design. This solicitation provides the opportunity for the submission of applications for projects that may involve human subjects research.

Building on the success of that process, and with the desire to increase the breadth of quality proposals, the committee is issuing a new call for proposals for projects that can help reverse global warming, whether through direct carbon avoidance, climate communication, climate education, industry engagement, or other means. Under this call, the foundation will award a single grant of $100,000.

This project will be conducted in two phases as funds become available. Overall, the entire project will educate an array of audiences to the effects of climate change in two of Alaskas National Parks and Preserves in an interactive online fashion as told by those who have experienced or observed changes over time. It will capture through oral interviews the effects of climate change in both parks, providing opportunity for audiences to draw comparisons to two distinct regions of Alaska. Where applicable, interviews will pay particular attention to: vegetation succession; retreating glaciers; vertical advance of tree lines; changes to coastal lagoons and formation of sea ice; shoreline erosion; permafrost melt; and shifts in phenology.

The US Geological Survey is offering a funding opportunity to conduct research to understand how groundwater recharge in the Western United States might respond to possible climatic shifts over the next century. Using a wide variety of measurements and estimates, the goal of this research is to synthesize current understanding of recharge across the entire West, forecast future groundwater dynamics under climate change scenarios, and identify where there are missing data and knowledge gaps that prevent forecasting of groundwater recharge.

In collaboration with the university science community, NCAR scientists focus on fundamental research aimed at improving our ability to predict meteorological, air quality and space weather hazards and increasing our understanding of the variability in and changes to the Earth's climate system at regional and global scales. These research themes are enabled by NCAR-operated facilities such as two highly modified aircraft (a C-130Q Hercules and a Gulfstream-V); a petascale supercomputing center in Cheyenne, Wyoming; and state-of-the-art community models, including the Community Earth System Model (CESM), the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). Partnerships with researchers in complementary fields, such as hydrology, cryospheric science, oceanography, terrestrial biology, public health and social sciences, to name a few, broaden NCAR's activities beyond the traditional atmospheric and geospace sciences. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing research that will contribute to an improved ability to understand and anticipate the public health and environmental impacts and behavioral drivers of significant changes in energy production and consumption in the United States, particularly those changes associated with advancing toward the deep decarbonization necessary to achieve national and international climate change mitigation objectives and avoid the most significant health, environmental, and economic impacts of climate change. The proposed research is intended to contribute to the development of new insights and predictive tools related to the multimedia, life-cycle impacts of the decarbonization of electricity generation; the electrification of end uses; the adoption of low-carbon emitting, renewable fuels; and the adoption of energy efficiency measures. The proposed research is also intended to contribute to an improved understanding of the drivers of individual, firm (i.e. business), and community decisions that affect energy consumption patterns, including decisions about the adoption of new technologies and energy efficiency measures.

Through this FOA, EERE will fund high impact projects that develop and demonstrate integrated solutions to any or all of these core technical challenges, primarily focused on solutions for U.S. climate zones with the greatest need - i.e., Hot/humid, Mixed Humid, and Cold climates.
