Guidelines for the Temper of the Times Foundation, Inc. - 0 views

    Temper of the Times Foundation provides funds only to nonprofit organizations classified as 501(c)(3) public charities by the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation does not provide grants to individuals, for-profit organizations, or government agencies. Grants are typically between $5,000 and $15,000 and are awarded for projects that will lead to measurable outcomes for wildland ecosystem conservation and restoration in the United States. Grants may be used to fund the production of print, radio, or television ads, to pay for advertising space or airtime, or to produce or distribute pamphlets, books, videos, or press packets. Because grants are for wildland ecosystem advertising campaigns, not for general organizational support, they may not be used to cover costs associated with the production of organization newsletters, membership campaigns, or for staff salaries. In addition, the Foundation cannot fund lobbying efforts or candidates for political office.

    This campaign seeks to characterize biodiversity on Earth by using integrative, innovative approaches to fill the most substantial gaps in our understanding of the diversity of life on Earth. It takes a broad view of biodiversity, and currently focuses on the integration of genetic, taxonomic/phylogenetic, and functional dimensions of biodiversity. Successful proposals should integrate these three dimensions to understand interactions and feedbacks among them. While this focus complements several core NSF programs, it differs by requiring that multiple dimensions of biodiversity be addressed simultaneously, in innovative or novel ways, to understand their synergistic roles in critical ecological and evolutionary processes.

    According to recent conversations between OARS staff and an NSF official, the NSF BioMaPS program is a funding opportunity that is perhaps undertargeted by researchers.  It funds interdisciplinary proposals that address "the interface between the biological, mathematical, and physical sciences and engineering."  Unsolicited proposals can be submitted to the deadlines of any relevant program in BIO, ENG, or MPS.  The label "BIOMAPS" should appear at the beginning of the proposal title.

    The Hydrologic Sciences Program focuses on the fluxes of water in the environment that constitute the water cycle as well as the mass and energy transport function of the water cycle in the environment.  The Program supports studying processes from rainfall to runoff to infiltration and streamflow; evaporation and transpiration; as well as the flow of water in soils and aquifers and the transport of suspended, dissolved and colloidal components.  Water is seen as the mode of coupling among various components of the environment and emphasis is placed on how the coupling is enabled by the water cycle and how it functions as a process.  The Hydrologic Sciences Program retains a strong focus on linking the fluxes of water and the components carried by water across the boundaries between various interacting components of the terrestrial system and the mechanisms by which these fluxes co-organize over a variety of timescales and/or alter the fundamentals of the interacting components.  The Program is also interested in how water interacts with the solid phase, the landscape and the ecosystem as well as how such interactions and couplings are altered by land use and climate change.  Studies may address aqueous geochemistry and solid phase interactions as well as physical, chemical, and biological processes as coupled to water transport. These studies commonly involve expertise from basic sciences and mathematics, and proposals may require joint review with related programs.  The Hydrologic Sciences Program will also consider some synthesis activities.

    his project is a characterization of soil, vegetation, condition sampling for determining future sustainable rangeland and woodland health in relation to BLMs many permitted activities. Technical assistance and support from a partner of Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit CESU is to help assess and interpret natural resource information as an applied research study to help BLM plan and determine a sustainable future for our public lands. This proposed project also supports a public purpose by analyzing data collected under a proven statistical method, the National Resources Inventory, which is vital to BLM. The project supports BLM's goals and mission to assess whether climate change or land management activities are improving or degrading the productivity of the land. At the same time, this work promotes useful information to support the interagency Ecological Site Description and transition model efforts.

    The Center for Snow and Avalanche Studies' Colorado Dust-on-Snow (CODOS) program, in Silverton, Colorado performs dust-on-snow monitoring throughout the Colorado mountains. Through this program the Center provides timely analyses and forecasts of dust effects to the Colorado River water management community and other interested stakeholders. The information provided through the program benefits the Lower Colorado Region by increasing the knowledge of the natural system, with the potential to improve runoff forecasts, and thereby improving operations of the Region's facilities. The primary CODOS deliverable is a series of operational dust-on-snow condition updates, alerts, and emails tailored to operations, which will be available for Reclamation and internal re-distribution. Research reports and products from other dust-on-snow research teams will also be available for use by Reclamation. Archived CODOS products, including previous year updates, and other data and analyses are also available for downloading at the CODOS program website located at http://www.snowstudies.org/CODOS.
