Temper of the Times Foundation provides funds only to nonprofit organizations classified as 501(c)(3) public charities by the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation does not provide grants to individuals, for-profit organizations, or government agencies. Grants are typically between $5,000 and $15,000 and are awarded for projects that will lead to measurable outcomes for wildland ecosystem conservation and restoration in the United States. Grants may be used to fund the production of print, radio, or television ads, to pay for advertising space or airtime, or to produce or distribute pamphlets, books, videos, or press packets. Because grants are for wildland ecosystem advertising campaigns, not for general organizational support, they may not be used to cover costs associated with the production of organization newsletters, membership campaigns, or for staff salaries. In addition, the Foundation cannot fund lobbying efforts or candidates for political office.

This campaign seeks to characterize biodiversity on Earth by using integrative, innovative approaches to fill the most substantial gaps in our understanding of the diversity of life on Earth. It takes a broad view of biodiversity, and currently focuses on the integration of genetic, taxonomic/phylogenetic, and functional dimensions of biodiversity. Successful proposals should integrate these three dimensions to understand interactions and feedbacks among them. While this focus complements several core NSF programs, it differs by requiring that multiple dimensions of biodiversity be addressed simultaneously, in innovative or novel ways, to understand their synergistic roles in critical ecological and evolutionary processes.

The NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) announces a special opportunity for collaborative research with UK-based research groups in the area of clean water. This NSF/ENG activity complements the recently begun NSF Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide effort, and it parallels a call from the EPSRC. This cooperative effort promotes excellence in engineering research through international collaboration and facilitates development of a diverse, globally-engaged, US engineering workforce.

New York State Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency under the United States Department of Agriculture, is announcing availability of Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies. Applications are accepted for projects located entirely within the State of New York.

The Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA; Title 34 of Public Law 102-575, Section 3406(b)(1)), authorizes and directs the Secretary of the Department of the Interior (DOI), in consultation with other State and Federal agencies, Indian tribes, and affected interests, to develop and implement a program which makes all reasonable efforts to at least double natural production of anadromous fish in Central Valley rivers and streams.

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) invite input from the public regarding a research campaign to inform our understanding of offshore wind energy development that could be conducted in the next two to five years during the construction and operation of the first generation of deployed facilities. We aim to quantify the impact-producing factors (i.e. the characteristics of a project that may cause an impact, such as the sound produced during construction) associated with a project and to evaluate the efficacy of monitoring technologies and techniques deployed at offshore wind farms selected at a future date. According to recent conversations between OARS staff and an NSF official, the NSF BioMaPS program is a funding opportunity that is perhaps undertargeted by researchers.  It funds interdisciplinary proposals that address "the interface between the biological, mathematical, and physical sciences and engineering."  Unsolicited proposals can be submitted to the deadlines of any relevant program in BIO, ENG, or MPS.  The label "BIOMAPS" should appear at the beginning of the proposal title.

The Hydrologic Sciences Program focuses on the fluxes of water in the environment that constitute the water cycle as well as the mass and energy transport function of the water cycle in the environment.  The Program supports studying processes from rainfall to runoff to infiltration and streamflow; evaporation and transpiration; as well as the flow of water in soils and aquifers and the transport of suspended, dissolved and colloidal components.  Water is seen as the mode of coupling among various components of the environment and emphasis is placed on how the coupling is enabled by the water cycle and how it functions as a process.  The Hydrologic Sciences Program retains a strong focus on linking the fluxes of water and the components carried by water across the boundaries between various interacting components of the terrestrial system and the mechanisms by which these fluxes co-organize over a variety of timescales and/or alter the fundamentals of the interacting components.  The Program is also interested in how water interacts with the solid phase, the landscape and the ecosystem as well as how such interactions and couplings are altered by land use and climate change.  Studies may address aqueous geochemistry and solid phase interactions as well as physical, chemical, and biological processes as coupled to water transport. These studies commonly involve expertise from basic sciences and mathematics, and proposals may require joint review with related programs.  The Hydrologic Sciences Program will also consider some synthesis activities.

Determine temporal trends and status changes in the acid-base chemistry of streams in the region that support reproducing populations of the indigenous brook trout.

his project is a characterization of soil, vegetation, condition sampling for determining future sustainable rangeland and woodland health in relation to BLMs many permitted activities. Technical assistance and support from a partner of Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit CESU is to help assess and interpret natural resource information as an applied research study to help BLM plan and determine a sustainable future for our public lands. This proposed project also supports a public purpose by analyzing data collected under a proven statistical method, the National Resources Inventory, which is vital to BLM. The project supports BLM's goals and mission to assess whether climate change or land management activities are improving or degrading the productivity of the land. At the same time, this work promotes useful information to support the interagency Ecological Site Description and transition model efforts.

U.S. Geological Survey¿s (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center is offering a funding opportunity for research on Assessing impacts of harmful algal blooms and habitat restoration on fisheries in Lakes Erie and Huron. This research will advance the understanding of fish use of habitats in the system and how habitat has been degraded, both of which are critical information needs for the development of strategies to repair, rehabilitate, and restore functional fish spawning and nursery habitat in the Huron-Erie Corridor, Saginaw Bay watershed, and other degraded systems.

The Center for Snow and Avalanche Studies' Colorado Dust-on-Snow (CODOS) program, in Silverton, Colorado performs dust-on-snow monitoring throughout the Colorado mountains. Through this program the Center provides timely analyses and forecasts of dust effects to the Colorado River water management community and other interested stakeholders. The information provided through the program benefits the Lower Colorado Region by increasing the knowledge of the natural system, with the potential to improve runoff forecasts, and thereby improving operations of the Region's facilities. The primary CODOS deliverable is a series of operational dust-on-snow condition updates, alerts, and emails tailored to operations, which will be available for Reclamation and internal re-distribution. Research reports and products from other dust-on-snow research teams will also be available for use by Reclamation. Archived CODOS products, including previous year updates, and other data and analyses are also available for downloading at the CODOS program website located at http://www.snowstudies.org/CODOS.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency under the United States Department of Agriculture, is announcing availability of Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies. Georgia NRCS anticipates that the amount available for support of this program in FY 2013 will be approximately $300,000. Applications are requested from eligible governmental or non-governmental organizations or individuals for competitive consideration of grant awards for projects between 1 and 3 years in duration.

The INSPIRE awards program was established to address some of the most complicated and pressing scientific problems that lie at the intersection of traditional disciplines.  It is intended to encourage investigators to submit bold, exceptional proposals that some may consider to be at a disadvantage in a standard NSF review process; it is not intended for proposals that are more appropriate for existing award mechanisms.

Requesting proposals to provide implementation of restoration activities on eligible Wetland Reserve Program properties. Applicants will be responsible for assistance to NRCS and landowners in implementing WRP restoration plans. Performance may include any part or all operations necessary to construct, provide inspection, and/or provide management activities for various wetland restorations, enhancement and creation practices; and other related conservation practices that meet NRCS standards and specifications.

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.

To establish a partnership to accomplish the public purpose of restoring New Mexico landscapes including woodlands, forested areas and shrublands, developing other improvement projects on public, private and state lands and foster partnerships with conservation organizations.
