    The Research on Education and Learning (REAL) program represents the substantive foci of three previous EHR programs: Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE), Research in Disabilities Education (RDE), and Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE). What is distinctive about the new REAL program is the emphasis placed on the accumulation of robust evidence to inform efforts to (a) understand, (b) build theory to explain, and (c) suggest interventions (and innovations) to address persistent challenges in STEM interest, education, learning, and participation. The program supports advances in research on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning and education by fostering efforts to explore all aspects of education research from foundational knowledge to improvements in STEM learning and learning contexts, both formal and informal, from childhood through adulthood, for all groups, and from the earliest developmental stages of life through participation in the workforce, resulting in increased public understanding of science and engineering. The REAL program will fund research on, human learning in STEM; learning in STEM learning environments, and broadening participation research.

Funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, these grants offer youth development organizations, community-based organizations, and schools/school districts grant funding and capacity-building training to effectively recruit and engage young people in meaningful service activities. Asking young people to volunteer for the first time on national days of service is a critical first step towards creating a culture in which all young people have the opportunity and support to find their voice, take action, and make an impact in their communities. An NSI is a group of secondary schools working in partnership with an Intermediary organization to use a continuous improvement process to significantly increase the number of Black, Latino, and low-income students who earn a high school diploma, enroll in a postsecondary institution, and are on track in their first year to earn a credential with labor-market value. Secondary school teams work collaboratively to identify, test, and refine solutions that target a problem and reach an aim common across the network. An NSI's aim is to improve outcomes that are predictive of high school graduation and postsecondary success.

    To that end, FCD currently is accepting proposals for its 2020 Young Scholars Program (YSP). The YSP program funds implementation research that is policy and practice-relevant and examines the preparation, competency, compensation, well-being, and ongoing professional learning of the early care and education (ECE) workforce. Research awards are up to $225,000 for primary research and up to $180,000 for secondary data analysis. All proposed research must attempt to answer primary questions that are relevant to the ECE workforce and support scientific inquiry into the implementation of specific early care and education programs, policies, or practices. Implementation research provides the opportunity to engage in meaningful exploration of what works (or not), for whom, and under what conditions. Some of the leading causes of child death include preterm birth complications, pneumonia, intrapartum-related complications, diarrhea, and sepsis/ meningitis. Applicants from all walks of life, and from all over the world, are invited to submit a proposal outlining how they plan to save the lives of children under the age of five who would otherwise die from a treatable and preventable cause.
