Grants of up to $350,000 will be awarded for research projects focused on issues faced by care providers that, when implemented, will improve the health, nutrition and/or developmental outcomes for infants and young children. The foundation is particularly looking for practical solutions that can be easily and rapidly implemented on a broad scale with a predictable time frame to clinical application. Major target areas for research include new diagnostic tools that may be more rapid, more specific, more sensitive, less invasive; new treatment regimens that are improved or novel, less stressful or painful, more targeted, have less side effects, provide optimal dosing; symptom relief; preventative measures; assessment of deficiencies or excesses (vitamins, minerals, drugs, etc.); and risk assessment tools or measures for environmental hazards, trauma, etc.

This notice announces the availability of funds and solicits proposals for projects that address children's environmental health risks in southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas communities located within 100 kilometers or 62 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border including but not limited to those that support prenatal environmental health education, healthy childcare education, environmental health youth summits, or pediatric environmental health training. Fahs-Beck Fund for Research and Experimentation is accepting applications from behavioral or psychological research studies based in the United States or Canada. Through its Faculty/Post-Doctoral Fellows program, the fund will award grants of up to $20,000 in support of studies aimed at developing, refining, evaluating, or disseminating innovative interventions designed to prevent or ameliorate major social, psychological, behavioral, or public health problems affecting children, adults, couples, families, or communities. The fund will also consider studies that have the potential for adding significantly to knowledge about such problems. Projects must be focused on the United States or Canada or on a comparison between the U.S. or Canada and one (or more) other country. To be eligible, applicants must be a faculty member at an accredited college or university or an individual affiliated with an accredited human service organization that is tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In addition, the principal investigator must have an earned doctorate in a relevant discipline and relevant experience.

The purpose of this Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is to encourage applications that will develop and validate tools and resources to facilitate the detailed analysis of brain microconnectivity. Novel and augmented techniques are sought that will ultimately be broadly accessible to the neuroscience community for the interrogation of microconnectivity in healthy and diseased brains of model organisms and humans. Development of technologies that will significantly drive down the cost of connectomics would enable routine mapping of the microconnectivity on the same individuals that have been analyzed physiologically, or to compare normal and pathological tissues in substantial numbers of multiple individuals to assess variability.  Advancements in both electron microscopy (EM) and super resolution light microscopic approaches are sought. Applications that propose to develop approaches that break through existing technical barriers to substantially improve current capabilities are highly encouraged. Proof-of-principle demonstrations and/or reference datasets enabling future development are welcome, as are improved approaches for automated segmentation and analysis strategies of neuronal structures in EM images.

This Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) seeks opportunities to co-create, co-design, co-invest, and collaborate in the research, development, piloting, testing, and scaling of innovative, practical and cost-effective interventions to address Zimbabwe's Development Challenges. Under the 2016 - 2020 Country Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS), USAID/Zimbabwe anticipates awarding a five-year $25 million cooperative agreement to provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC) at the national level and in Manicaland province. This award will be made through a full and open competition, under which any type of organization is eligible to apply. Building on the achievements of current USAID-supported activities, the purpose of the activity is improved maternal, youth, and child health and survival in beneficiary communities and populations. This activity will improve the health of women, youth, and children in Manicaland by strengthening maternal, newborn, child health and family planning (integrated MNCH-FP) service delivery throughout the continuum of care, i.e., from the home, to the community, to the primary care facility, and to the tertiary referral hospital. Continuum of care refers to a concept involving a system that guides and tracks patients over time through a comprehensive array of health services spanning all levels and intensity of care. Integrated MNCH-FP service delivery refers to combining together MNCH and FP health services in order to expand access to care, increase efficiencies, and improve health outcomes. The activity will also increase access to a broader range of family planning methods through outreach services at the national level.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to establish a program of research to advance the understanding, prevention and treatment of pediatric multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Given the prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality of MODS in children, the current lack of understanding underscores the need for more basic, exploratory and longitudinal research. Possible topics of study include, but are not limited, to the epidemiology, pathophysiology, monitoring, and treatment of MODS. Studies that assess specific etiologies associated with MODS including, but not limited to, sepsis, trauma, acute respiratory distress syndrome, inborn errors of metabolism, burns, cancer, transplantation and congenital heart disease are encouraged. Applications may include any appropriate study designs ranging from basic science and animal models through prospective randomized controlled trials. It is hoped that as a result of research supported through this funding opportunity, outcomes will improve both in terms of the prevention and treatment of MODS in children.

This notice solicits applications for Advancing Systems of Services for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. The purpose of this program is to improve health and well-being for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and their families by addressing three core systems focus areas for CYSHCN-access to patient/family-centered medical home, transition of youth into the adult health care system, and adoption of health care financing models that improve care and outcomes while achieving cost savings. This program will establish a national collaborative network of resource centers supporting state Title V programs, families of CYSHCN, child health professionals, and other stakeholders through the provision of technical assistance, training, education, partnership building, policy analysis, and research. Program Goal: The overall goal of this program is to strengthen the system of services for CYSHCN and their families by awarding three separate and distinct cooperative agreements. Cooperative agreements will be awarded to three recipients, who will collaborate to establish a national network of resource centers, with one center awarded for each of the following three focus areas: (1) Patient/family-centered medical home; (2) Transition of youth into the adult health care system; and (3) Health care financing models that improve care and outcomes while achieving cost savings. The three recipients will coordinate efforts to achieve quality care, decrease health care costs, and improve experience of care for CYSHCN and their families. A comprehensive understanding of the natural history of a disorder has been identified as a necessary element to facilitate appropriate interventions for infants identified by newborn screening. By defining the sequence and timing of the onset of symptoms and complications of a disorder, a valuable resource will be developed for the field. In addition, for some disorders, specific genotype-phenotype correlations may allow prediction of the clinical course, and for other disorders, identification of modifying genetic, epigenetic, or environmental factors will enhance an understanding of the clinical outcomes for an individual with such a condition.
