Small Vessel Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID) Biomarkers Consortium: Coordinating Center (U24) - 0 views

    In May of 2013 the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), with input from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), held an Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias Conference in response to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. The Conference brought together national and international experts and members of the public to develop research priorities for accelerating the development of therapies for the Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRDs). The ADRD 2013 research recommendations that resulted are part of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. This FOA addresses the National Plan's highest priority for human-based research on vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID): to develop noninvasive markers of key vascular processes related to VCID in Alzheimer's and related dementias. The research program initiated here underscores the need to facilitate the development of biomarkers to improve the efficiency and outcome of Phase II and III clinical trials and advance therapeutic development. These companion FOAs (RFA-NS-16-019, i.e. this FOA; and RFA-NS-16-020 for the Biomarkers Development Projects) establish the Small Vessel VCID Biomarkers Consortium, and are focused on small vessel (i.e. arterioles, capillaries, and venules) VCID in vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), vascular dementia, and all mixed and pure cognitive impairment and dementias with contributing small vessel vascular disease, including such as commonly occurs in sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Awards funded under these two FOAs create a consortium and infrastructure to complete development projects as well as planning that will enable follow-up activities (to be carried out under future separate funding; for example large scale multi-site validation studies and other activities, for future FDA qualification of small vessel VCID biomarkers and use in clinical trials).

    This announcement solicits applications for the Life Course Research Network (LCRN).  The life course theory posits that multiple determinants, such as health care, nutrition, stress and supports, and environmental exposures, operating over the life course are critical drivers of MCH outcomes.  The LCRN is designed to accelerate the translation of the life course theory to MCH practice and policy and foster its rapid adoption into clinical and public health settings through systems integration and collaboration among entities interested in improving MCH outcomes.     Materials Innovation Platforms (MIP) is a mid-scale infrastructure program in the Division of Materials Research (DMR) designed to accelerate advances in materials research. MIPs respond to the increasing complexity of materials research that requires close collaboration of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams and access to cutting edge tools. These tools in a user facility benefit both a user program and in-house research, which focus on addressing grand challenges of fundamental science and meet national needs. MIPs embrace the paradigm set forth by the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), which strives to "discover, manufacture, and deploy advanced materials twice as fast, at a fraction of the cost," and conduct research through iterative "closed-loop" efforts among the areas of materials synthesis/processing, materials characterization, and theory/modeling/simulation. In addition, they are expected to engage the emerging field of data science in materials research. Each MIP is a scientific ecosystem, which includes in-house research scientists, external users and other contributors who, collectively, form a community of practitioners and share tools, codes, samples, data and know-how. The knowledge sharing is designed to strengthen collaborations among scientists and enable them to work in new ways, fostering new modalities of research and education/training, for the purpose of accelerating discovery and development of new materials and novel materials phenomena/properties, as well as fostering their eventual deployment.

Studies will bring intense focus to patients with well-defined pain conditions and high unmet therapeutic needs. EPPIC-Net will consist of one Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and approximately 10 specialized clinical centers (hubs). As the main data manager for pain research in the HEAL Initiative, the EPPIC-Net DCC will host and manage clinical, neuroimaging, biomarker, omics, and preclinical data from EPPIC-Net and other components of the HEAL Initiatives pain research program.

    The NIEHS is establishing an infrastructure, the Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR) as a continuation of the Children's Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR). The goal of this consortium is to provide the research community access to laboratory and statistical analyses to add or expand the inclusion of environmental exposures in their research and to make that data publicly available as a means to improve our knowledge of the comprehensive effects of environmental exposures on human health throughout the life course. This FOA solicits Laboratories (Lab Hubs) providing a comprehensive suite of analysis of environmental exposures in samples such as dust, soil, and drinking water related to the immediate environment of individuals and linked to health endpoints. Each Hub will incorporate a developmental core to develop novel measures for environmental samples, expanding the number of current, commonly measured analytes, and developing new methods for detecting analytes in other environmental samples and providing additional insight into the sources of exposures that influence human health. The Environmental Monitoring Lab will also serve as a 'clearinghouse for evaluation and provision of emerging tools and technologies for personal exposure assessment to the client community.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for an Early Psychosis Intervention Network (EPINET) National Data Coordinating Center (ENDCC) to support and extend the work of regional scientific hubs described in companion announcement RFA-MH-19-150. The ENDCC will lead efforts to (a) harmonize early psychosis common data elements, standard measures, and uniform data collection procedures across multiple early psychosis Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) clinics within regional networks; (b) build informatics infrastructure and pipelines necessary to gather and store de-identified, patient-level data collected across all regional clinics; (c) develop data analysis, presentation, and reporting tools to facilitate timely quality improvement and program evaluation efforts across regional networks; (d) identify innovative CSC assessment, intervention, and quality improvement practices for broad dissemination; and (e) make national CSC data available for practice-based research to improve early identification, diagnosis, clinical assessment, intervention effectiveness, service delivery and health outcomes in early psychosis. The ENDCC will combine regional datasets into a national repository of early psychosis common data elements, clinical measures, assessment and intervention strategies, and de-identified person-level data from patients receiving CSC services. Data assembled by the ENDCC will facilitate large-scale, practice-based research to improve early identification, diagnosis, clinical assessment, intervention effectiveness, and health outcomes in clinics offering evidence-based care to persons in the early stages of psychotic illness.

    The purpose of this FOA is to call for U24 cooperative agreement applications that will request funding to further develop and sustain up to three H3Africa Biorepositories, building upon existing infrastructure. The H3Africa Biorepositories will continue to have the responsibility of maintaining state of the art methods and technologies for DNA collection, processing, quality control, handling, management, and storage and of providing support services needed for bio-specimen collection and dissemination in Africa. They may also propose collection and handling of specimen types including but not limited to PBMCs, plasma, serum etc.  Biorepositories will coordinate closely with H3Africa research projects and the H3Africa Bioinformatics network (H3ABioNet) to ensure responsible stewardship of high quality biological specimens linked to well-curated phenotypic and genomic data.
