This award is intended to provide support for developing and maintaining an organizational infrastructure to support a broad-based public-private partnership under FDA's Analgesic, Anesthetic, and Addiction Clinical Trial Translations, Innovations, Opportunities, and Networks (ACTTION) Initiative. Specific projects under the ACTTION Initiative may also be funded.

The Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP) supports research-related resources that create, develop, preserve and supply a variety of high-quality animal models, and related biological materials. ORIP also supports the development and implementation of tools and devices that directly benefit the welfare of research animals, improve handling of laboratory animals, and ease the management of animal facilities. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages small business concerns to submit Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant applications that propose innovative approaches and technologies to further develop, improve and facilitate the use of animal models and related biological materials, to meet new biomedical challenges related to improvements in the health of humans and the welfare of animal models.

The Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRC) program develops long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. The Centers are catalyzed by an investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are primarily supported by industry Center members, with NSF taking a supporting role in the development and evolution of the Center. Each Center is established to conduct research that is of interest to both the industry members and the Center faculty. An IUCRC contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base and enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. As appropriate, an IUCRC uses international collaborations to advance these goals within the global context.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit organ-specific applications for Biomarker Developmental Laboratories (BDLs), one of the four scientific units of the recently funded Early Detection Research Network (EDRN). The EDRN is a national infrastructure funded to discover, develop, and validate biomarkers for risk assessment, detection, and molecular diagnosis and prognosis of early cancer. BDLs are responsible for the discovery, development, characterization, and testing of new, or the refinement of existing, biomarkers and biomarker assays for risk assessment, detection, and molecular diagnosis and prognosis of cancers. The existing BDLs are primarily focused on ovary and gastrointestinal cancers. The primary goals of the INBRE program are to: 1) build on the established multi-disciplinary research network with a scientific focus to strengthen the biomedical research expertise and infrastructure of the lead and partner institutions; 2) build and increase the research base and capacity by providing support to faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students at the participating institutions; 3) provide research opportunities for students from primarily undergraduate institutions, community colleges and TCCUs as appropriate and serve as a "pipeline" for these students to continue in health research careers within IDeA states; and 4) enhance science and technology knowledge of the state's workforce.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement invites applications to establish Centers of Excellence for Self-Management Research: Building Research Teams for the Future (P30). The purpose of the program is to enhance interdisciplinary, biobehavioral research for scientists conducting self-management research by enabling development of a sustainable research infrastructure and centralized resources in support of research programs in various science areas.

This FOA solicits applications for a U24 Cooperative Agreement project to support a collaborative research infrastructure that includes a team of multidisciplinary scientists to plan translational research strategies to identify potential therapeutic targets based on findings of genetic factors influencing human lifespan and health span. In the context of this FOA, the term "target identification strategy" refers to a concerted set of applied research approaches to address a key step in the development of new therapeutic or preventive interventions, or repurposing existing interventions to delay onset of age-related conditions, including identification of molecules or pathways by which activities could be favorably modified.

Overview: The Department of the Navy, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) is interested in receiving applications for a new Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) program dedicated to improving prevention, early recognition, diagnosis, and effective treatment of severe sepsis from all causes in austere environments. This program will be supported through the establishment of a consortium of investigators with skills and expertise in infectious disease, critical care, systems biology, global health, and other relevant fields who will work together on a coordinated program of research. This consortium, named the Austere Environments Consortium for Enhanced Sepsis Outcomes (ACESO), will focus on the generation of knowledge that can rapidly translate into preventing and improving the outcome of severe sepsis in austere or resource-limited settings. Particular attention will focus on etiologic causes that currently have no specific therapies and that pose unique risks to the military with respect to outbreaks, deployed forces, or deliberate-use scenarios (e.g., viral hemorrhagic fever [VHF]). ACESO will establish a platform for research to address gaps in the Department of Defense's (DoD) capabilities for improving knowledge on severe sepsis and biological threats that manifest as severe sepsis in austere settings. ACESO will leverage a network of investigators, trained study staff, and in-country infrastructure to execute research that will evaluate clinical management strategies and the pathogenesis of severe sepsis, characterize the clinical aspects of sepsis related to various potential biological threats, improve outcomes for severe sepsis in austere environments, investigate the immunopathogenesis and long-term sequelae of infectious etiologies (especially hemorrhagic fevers), and augment the capability to gather important clinical data in outbreak settings of severe emerging disease.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the NHLBI, invites Resource-Related Research Project applications (R24) to support projects that will enhance the capabilities of ongoing basic, translational, and clinical research through the development of resources or infrastructure for use by the broader scientific community for furthering research. The scope of the R24 must address a critical national need that fulfills the NHLBI's strategic vision.

NSF and selected foreign counterpart science and technology agencies sponsor international research institutes for U.S. graduate students in seven East Asia and Pacific locations at times set by the counterpart agencies between June and August each year. The Summer Institutes (EAPSI) operate similarly and the research visits to a particular location take place at the same time. Although applicants apply individually to participate in a Summer Institute, awardees become part of the cohort for each location. Applicants must propose a location, host scientist, and research project that is appropriate for the host site and duration of the international visit. An EAPSI award provides U.S. graduate students in science, engineering, and education: 1) first-hand research experiences in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan; 2) an introduction to the science, science policy, and scientific infrastructure of the respective location; and 3) an orientation to the society, culture, and language. It is expected that EAPSI awards will help students initiate professional relationships to enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. The NSF award includes participation in the Pre-Departure Orientation, summer stipend of $5,000, and roundtrip airplane ticket to the host location. EAPSI partner agencies pay in-country living expenses during the Summer Institutes.

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology.  The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site.  For FY 2013, these BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation in Biology; (2) Intersections of Biology and Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering; (3) National Plant Genome Initiative Postdoctoral Research Fellowships; and (4) International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology.  These areas change periodically as new scientific and infrastructure opportunities present themselves. For this reason, this solicitation will be changed as necessary to reflect the areas being funded.

This solicitation describes the first phase of a new NSF program to support transformative and integrative research that will accelerate understanding of neural and cognitive systems. NSF seeks exceptional proposals that are bold, potentially risky, and transcend the perspectives and approaches typical of disciplinary research programs. This multi-directorate program is one element of NSF’s broader aim to foster innovation in Cognitive Science and Neuroscience, a multi-year effort that includes NSF’s participation in the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative (http://www.nsf.gov/brain/). For FY 2015, this competition is organized around two research themes: Neuroengineering and Brain-Inspired Concepts and Designs and Individuality and Variation. The national response to the HIV epidemic in Swaziland has undergone dramatic changes and achieved major milestones up to date. As the epidemic matures in Swaziland and the country shifts from emergency response to scale-up of prevention interventions and universal access to care and treatment, the technical needs of the country are also evolving. Monitoring trends, identifying and addressing knowledge gaps, and strengthening the country's long-term capacity to use epidemiological tools to produce strategic information are now recognized as important priorities moving forward. Currently, Swaziland lacks coordinated infrastructure and capacity to formulate and address research questions that will inform programmatic and policy decisions. In addition, the country needs a robust epidemiological surveillance system for communicable and non-communicable disease to enable the detection of and efficient response to disease outbreaks. The overall goal of this FOA is to strengthen the capacity of Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ministry of Economic Planning and Development (MoEPD) to produce and effectively use epidemiological, surveillance, and research data in the Kingdom of Swaziland.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites a High Impact Research and Research Infrastructure Cooperative Agreement application (UC4) from the Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) of the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) that has been involved in study design and coordination, and data and biosample acquisition and management, since the inception of The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) consortium, an ongoing epidemiological study.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide regional access for cryoelectron microscopy (cryoEM) laboratories to state-of-the-art data collection capabilities.  NIGMS will support consortia of established and early stage investigator laboratories whose research has an established specialization in and dependence on cryoEM.  These laboratories will coordinate with each other to share facilities and resources for direct electron detection.  Consortia will consist of a host institution which already has a modern high-performing cryoEM installation and proven capabilities for high-resolution data collection, partnered with regional participating institutions.  A consortium will support surplus capacity for cryoEM data collection (infrastructure and services) at the host institution and make it available as a resource for the participating regional institutions.  Projects will support access for cryoEM laboratories at participating institutions to resources and services at host sites.  Projects will (a) contribute to the fixed costs of maintaining the host facility and extend services in proportion to the resources dedicated to the regional users and (b) support access to the facility by the regional laboratories.  The host institution need not already have an electron detector; this FOA can help fund acquisition of direct detection equipment.  Support is limited to enabling the participating cryoEM laboratories to collect data and perform the initial stages of processing raw images, and does not include other research activities.  Consortia will consist of a minimum of 3-5 institutions; award budgets will depend on the number and data collection needs of the regional participating cryoEM laboratories.  This initiative is not intended to support service centers of the traditional type in which the host laboratory performs the cryoEM analysis for non-specialist collaborators.
