This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites training grant applications for support of predoctoral and postdoctoral training for research careers in biomedical informatics and data science. The purpose of the BRAIN Initiative Fellows (F32) program is to enhance the research training of promising postdoctorates, early in their postdoctoral training period, who have the potential to become productive investigators in research areas that will advance the goals of the BRAIN Initiative. Applications are encouraged in any research area that is aligned with the BRAIN Initiative, including neuroethics. Applicants are expected to propose research training in an area that complements their predoctoral research. Formal training in quantitative perspectives and analytical tools is expected to be an integral part of the proposed research training plan. In order to maximize the training potential of the F32 award, this program encourages applications from individuals who have not yet completed their terminal doctoral degree and who expect to do so within 12 months of the application due date. On the application due date, candidates may not have completed more than 6 months of postdoctoral training.  

The purpose of the Colgate-Palmolive Award for Student Research Training in Alternative Methods is to enhance graduate student research training using in vitro methods or alternative techniques to reduce, replace or refine use of animals in toxicological research. The training may include, but is not limited to, use of in vitro and ex vivo procedures, nonmammalian animal models, computer modeling, and structure-activity relationships. Graduate students may propose to develop expertise in relevant methodologies 1) at a laboratory away from their home institution, 2) at a laboratory at their home institution that would not be available to them otherwise, or 3) at approved workshops, symposia or continuing education programs where hands-on training will be received. The training should help toxicology graduate students enhance their thesis or dissertation research. The overall goal is to support the replacement, reduction, or refinement of currently used animal models in toxicology research and testing. The proposal will include a budget of up to $3,750 to defray travel, per diem, training expenses, and research costs.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages applications for the Chronic, Non-Communicable Diseases and Disorders Across the Lifespan: Fogarty International Research Training Award (NCD-LIFESPAN) D43 program for institutional research training programs in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs, as defined by the World Bank classification system). Applications may be for collaborations between institutions in the U.S and an eligible LMIC or may involve just LMIC institutions if there is a previous track record of externally funded research and/or research training programs by the lead LMIC institution. The proposed institutional research training program is expected to sustainably strengthen the NCD research capacity of the LMIC institutions, and to train in-country experts to develop and conduct research on NCDs across the lifespan, with the long-range goal of developing and implementing evidence-based interventions relevant to their countries. The main focus of research training covered in the application must be relevant to the interests of at least one of the participating NIH ICs as stated by each in this FOA. Other NCD topics may be included as secondary and complementary focus areas.

PART A -- Core Curricular Enhancements Strategic Direction A2 -- Promote educational enhancements that include transdisciplinary and interprofessional population health training Activity I: Medical Assistants Resources and Training on Immunization (MARTi) MARTi is a website http://www.marti-us.org/ hosted and updated by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). MARTi was developed to provide a collection of immunization training, education, and resource materials for medical assistants and those responsible for their training, such as office managers or supervisors. The website provides reviewed and credible training and education programs and resources specifically developed for the education and reading level of medical assistants. Activities will include the following: --Manage and update the website content and resources as new vaccine recommendations and best practices become available and redesign the navigation of the website to feature resources offering continuing education (CE) credits --Create newsletters and social media announcements --Develop responsive design website to provide access through mobile devices --Assemble a committee of experts to advance use of the website and recommend improvements. Committee will convene via conference call (3 or 4 times a year). The committee will consist of key groups including the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Professional Association of Healthcare Organization Management (PACHOM) as well as post-secondary institutions training future medical assistants. CDC will not direct or manage any aspects of the committee.

NIGMS supports T32 Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA) predoctoral research training through programs in 11 different scientific disciplines, and M.D.-Ph.D. training through its medical scientist training program.These programs are designed to enhance graduate research training in basic biomedical sciences relevant to the NIGMS mission. The overall goal of these programs is to promote fundamental, interdisciplinary and innovative research training essential for future biomedical researchers.

Many NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this NRSA program exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer. This program is also intended to encourage training of graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences to pursue research careers by short-term exposure to, and involvement in, the health-related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research.

The goal of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is to develop a diverse pool of highly trained physician-scientist leaders available to meet the needs of the Nations biomedical research agenda. Specifically, this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) provides support to eligible domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-based approaches to integrated dual-degree training leading to the award of both professional medical doctorate degrees and research doctorate degrees (Ph.D. or equivalent). With the dual qualification of rigorous scientific research and clinical practice, graduates will be equipped with the skills to develop research programs that accelerate the translation of research advances to the understanding, detection, treatment and prevention of human disease, and to lead the advancement of biomedical research. Areas of particular importance to NIGMS are the iterative optimization of MSTP training efficacy and efficiency, fostering the persistence of MSTP alumni in research careers, and enhancing the diversity of the physician-scientist workforce. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for a planning grant from institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to 1.) Design a Global Infectious Disease (GID) Research Training Program in collaboration with U.S. collaborators and 2.) Strengthen LMIC faculty and prepare advanced courses and training resources for the program envisioned at the LMIC institution. The application should propose a collaborative process to create a new training program that will strengthen the capacity of the LMIC institution to conduct infectious disease research. Applications should include activities to strengthen LMIC faculty leadership and skills as well as prepare advanced scientific didactic and methodology courses and research training resources development relevant to the program to be planned. A detailed vision for a research training program that focuses on a major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious disease, neglected tropical disease, infections that frequently occur as a co-infection in HIV infected individuals or infections associated with non-communicable disease conditions of public health importance in LMICs should be proposed.

The Autism Science Foundation is inviting applications for its Pre- and Postdoctoral Training Awards and Medical School Gap Year Research Training Awards from graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing careers in basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders. This NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), supported by funds from the NIH Common Fund (Common Fund), invites applications to support bioinformatics research training programs at low or middle income (LMIC) African country institutions with significant genomics research capacity.  African applicants may propose graduate degree and long term postdoctoral bioinformatics research training in collaboration with other African or high income country (HIC) collaborators.  It is expected that these training programs will address the need for bioinformatics research expertise in the H3Africa Consortium and result in sustainable centers of bioinformatics research training relevant to global health research for the African continent.

The Jointly Sponsored NIH Predoctoral Training Program in the Neurosciences (JSPTPN) is an institutional program that supports broad and fundamental research training in the neurosciences. In addition to a broad education in the neurosciences, a key component will be a curriculum that provides a strong foundation in experimental design, statistical methodology and quantitative reasoning. . JSPTPN programs are intended to be two years in duration, and students may only be appointed to this training grant during the first 2 years of their graduate research training. The primary objective is to prepare individuals for careers in neuroscience that will have a significant impact on our understanding of nervous system function and the health-related research needs of the nation.

The FY17 JPC-1/MSIS TRANSfeR Award Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is seeking research to determine whether the medical skill learned on a simulation system has a downstream beneficial effect to patients and/or the MHS in the real clinical world. The Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity seeks applications for research to demonstrate that simulation-based medical training has a measurable outcome on patient care. Previous T1 studies have shown improvement in skills in the simulated environment when deliberate practice and mastery learning (a set of group-based, individualized, learning strategies based on the belief that students will achieve a high level of understanding in a given area when given enough time) occur as part of training. The next set of studies should measure whether these same techniques translate to patient care and affect systems of care such as return-to-duty rates and morbidity and mortality statistics. Such research will involve taking the lessons learned in the laboratory and measuring outcomes in the patients who are cared for either in an operational environment or medical treatment facility. Historical patient outcome data does exist for the way medical professionals are trained now, so the variable being introduced in new studies would be simulation-based training.
