    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to enhance the pool of of highly trained investigators from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in research. It is targeted toward individuals whose basic, clinical, and translational research interests are grounded in the advanced methods and experimental approaches needed to solve problems related to cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematologic diseases and sleep disorders in the general and health disparities populations. This FOA invites applications from Institutions with eligible faculty members to undertake special study and supervised research under a mentor who is an accomplished investigator in the research area proposed and has experience in developing independent investigators. This FOA is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial. Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applicants proposing a clinical trial or an ancillary study to an ongoing clinical trial as lead investigator, should apply to the companion FOA (see RFA-HL-19-025).

    The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage biomedical, behavioral and social sciences research that will enhance knowledge of mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD) so as to enable novel treatment development. NPS, or Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), include aggression, psychosis, anxiety, apathy, depression, agitation, sleep disturbances and wandering, and can be significant challenges to the care and treatment of people with dementia. These symptoms lead to accelerated declines in both functional abilities and may lead to earlier nursing home placement. Currently, few pharmacological treatments are available. In addition, there is a need to understand behavioral and environmental targets to further refine and develop promising behavioral treatments for these disorders.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications to further develop enabling technologies and transformative platforms to catalyze next-generation predictive, diagnostic and therapeutic products to address heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS)-related disorders and diseases. This FOA solicits R33 applications where major feasibility gaps for the enabling technology or transformative platform have already been overcome, as demonstrated with supportive preliminary data, but still requires further development and rigorous validation to encourage downstream demonstration, utilization and adoption. Well-suited applications must offer the potential to accelerate and/or transform the areas of early detection and screening, model development, clinical diagnosis, treatment, control, prevention or epidemiology, while addressing issues associated with HLBS-related diseases and disorders. Projects proposing application of existing technologies where the novelty resides in the biological or clinical target/question being pursued are not appropriate for this solicitation and will not be reviewed.     This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks grant applications for a Research Coordinating Center (RCC) to support associated "Heart, Lung, and Blood Co-morbiditieS Implementation Models in People Living with HIV (HLB SIMPLe)" UG3/UH3 phased cooperative agreements that propose to optimally and sustainably address late-stage implementation research questions to address the delivery of proven-effective prevention and treatment interventions for heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) comorbid diseases and disorders in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in World Bank designated low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). For the purposes of this FOA, late-stage implementation research is defined as research to identify strategies to achieve sustainable uptake of proven-effective interventions in routine clinical, public health, and community-based settings and maximize the positive impact on population health. The RCC will coordinate the collaborative efforts of the global alliance of funded UG3/UH3 phased cooperative agreements conducting late-stage implementation research within the following geographical regions: East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The HLB SIMPLe RCC will coordinate activities including in-person and virtual Network Steering Committee meetings, subcommittee meetings, and working groups; promote collaboration and communication among investigators and the broader research community; coordinate network outreach activities; coordinate joint research and capacity building efforts conducted across the HLB SIMPLe alliance; and organize, implement, and manage a global implementation research data safety and monitoring board (DSMB).     This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applicants to develop innovative research applications on prescription drug abuse, including research to examine the factors contributing to prescription drug abuse; to characterize the adverse medical, mental health and social consequences associated with prescription drug abuse; and to develop effective prevention and service delivery approaches and behavioral and pharmacological treatments. Applications to address these issues are encouraged across a broad range of methodological approaches including basic science, clinical, epidemiological, and health services research to define the extent of the problem of prescription drug abuse, to characterize this problem in terms of classes of drugs abused and combinations of drug types, etiology of abuse, and populations most affected (including analyses by age group, race/ethnicity, gender, and psychiatric symptomatology). Studies on individual- and patient-level factors, prescriber factors, and/or health system factors are encouraged, as are studies on all classes of prescription drugs with high abuse liability, including analgesics, stimulants, sedative/hypnotics and anxiolytics. Researchers are further encouraged to study the relationship between the prescription medication, the indication for which the medication was prescribed (e.g., pain, sleep disorder, anxiety disorder, obesity), and the environmental and individual factors contributing to abuse.

Rare Disease Cohorts in Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Disorders (UG3/UH3 Clinical Trial ... - 0 views

    The purpose of this FOA is to fund research centers that will establish longitudinal cohorts in rare HLBS diseases to investigate unaddressed research questions using epidemiologic study designs and methods that are appropriate for conditions affecting fewer than 200,000 persons in the US. These observational cohort studies should be designed to provide an evidence base for future interventional studies, including clinical trials; for developing better diagnostics than those that are currently available; for answering early translational questions; or for broader implementation of guidelines for managing these diseases. This program will provide opportunities to advance rare disease research using genetics and deep phenotyping to characterize the disease and to identify disease sub-types; to use data science methods that integrate clinical and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) with laboratory, imaging, environmental and -omics data to understand the natural history of disease; to generate data that differentiate patients with the same morphological phenotype but different genetic mutations and severity of outcomes; to elucidate genotype-phenotype interactions and multisystem phenotyping to develop reliable and valid predictive tools to determine who will respond to which treatments and when to intervene; and to encourage innovative methods such as telemedicine to include participants with rare diseases located in remote locations.
