Administrative Supplements for Research on Sleep Disturbances and Impact on Chronic Pain - 0 views

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) announces the availability of a one-time administrative supplement for clinical research awards from limited NIH Institutes and Centers and for specific types of awards, listed above in 'Activity Codes', to support research on sleep disturbance and chronic pain. The proposed activities may include the addition of: sleep assessment to clinical studies of pain; pain assessment to clinical studies of sleep; measures of sleep and/or pain for clinical studies already incorporating sleep and/or pain measures; additional data collection time points for clinical studies already incorporating sleep and/or pain measures; or secondary data analysis of clinical studies to explore contributions of sleep disturbances to chronic pain as long as the research objectives are within the original scope of the peer reviewed and approved project and can be completed within the remaining funding period. The final goal of the supplement should be a contribution to methods or understanding needed for future larger scale studies that directly investigate the interactions between sleep disturbances and chronic pain.

Stress can result in sleep disruption due to both psychological as well as physiological changes. Sleep disruption can result in physiological changes; however, individuals may not recognize or identify impairment due to sleep disruption. This initiative supports the development of research teams to understand how basic individual, social, biological, and environmental factors interact in a dynamic relationship between sleep patterns and psychosocial stress to influence health, wellness, disease, and/or treatment adherence.

    This FOA aims to elucidate basic sleep and circadian mechanisms contributing to the risk of opiate use disorder (OUD), the pathobiology of opiate withdrawal, and that influence the response to medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Studies are needed to apply advances in understanding sleep and circadian biology to improving our understanding of OUD, the directionality of sleep and OUD interactions, and the opportunities to improve therapy and outcome. Multi-disciplinary, multiple-investigator teams combining expertise in sleep and circadian neurobiology with the neurobiology OUD and pharmacology of MAT are strongly encouraged. This FOA is only open to the study of OUD relevant mechanisms and pathobiology. The study of other drugs of abuse will not be responsive.

These technologies may be novel sensor or monitoring systems, home-use point-of-care devices, home or mobile therapy or rehabilitation tools, or information systems and should have the goal of fostering healthy and independent living for aging adults with HLBS conditions. Technology usability for these populations must be incorporated early in the development of the design.
