Healthy Start Initiative: Eliminating Disparities in Perinatal Health - 0 views

    This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Healthy Start Initiative: Eliminating Disparities in Perinatal Health program. The purpose of this Healthy Start (HS) program is to improve health outcomes before, during, and after pregnancy, and reduce racial/ethnic differences in rates of infant death and adverse perinatal outcomes. The HS program provides grants to high-risk communities with infant mortality rates at least 1.5 times the U.S. national average and high rates of other adverse perinatal outcomes (e.g., low birthweight, preterm birth, maternal morbidity and mortality). HS works to reduce the disparity in health status between the general population and individuals who are members of racial or ethnic minority groups.

    The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications that propose basic and/or translational research studies regarding the developing neurovascular unit, perinatal stroke injury/repair response, and/or stroke related etiologies and risk factors. Research addressing vascular, hemostatic, hematopoietic, and/or immune cell activities in the developing brain is of particular interest. The intent is to stimulate research that will identify therapeutic targets in perinatal stroke.

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications to phenotype and/or perform research on embryonic lethal knockout (KO) mouse strains being generated through the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) of which the NIH Knockout Mouse Phenotyping Program (KOMP2) is a member.  The KOMP2 KO mouse phenotyping effort has generated 2,500 mouse strains with plans to generate an additional 6,000 over the next five years.  Overall, the IMPC hopes to achieve broad-based phenotyping of 20,000 KO strains.  About 30% of these strains either are or are expected to be embryonic or perinatal lethal or subviable.  A large portion of homozygous lethal mutations are expected to have viable heterozygous phenotypes.  The scientific community has the unique opportunity to leverage these mouse strains while they are being created and bred as part of the IMPC adult mouse phenotyping effort to perform additional in depth phenotyping and research.

As of November 2019, the IMPC-KOMP2 KO mouse phenotyping effort has generated mutants in 9,051 mouse genes, completed phenotypes of 7153 lines, and released data for 6255 lines corresponding to 5861 mutant genes. Overall, the IMPC hopes to achieve broad-based phenotyping of roughly 20,000 KO strains. About 30% of these strains either are expected to be embryonic or perinatal lethal, or subviable. A large portion of homozygous lethal mutations are expected to have viable heterozygous phenotypes.     This award is designed to support young scientists just embarking on their independent research careers.  The applicants' research interests should be consonant with those of the March of Dimes' mission: The  Mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes defines a birth defect as any abnormality of structure or function, whether inherited, or acquired in utero and presenting in infancy or early childhood. Deviations from reproductive health of women and men as an underlying basis of birth defects, i.e. preconceptional events, perinatal course, and premature births, are appropriate subjects for research support. Relevance is interpreted broadly to include fundamental cell biology (embryogenesis, cell lineage, differentiation), genetics and genomics, fundamental cellular and clinical pathogenesis of disorders of importance to mothers and infants, biomedical engineering and imaging, and social and behavioral aspects. Each application should be accompanied by a Letter of Support from a Nominator (see below). The award is $150,000 for two years, including 10 percent indirect costs to sponsoring institutions.
