This fall, NSF intends to announce Mid-scale RI funding opportunities. These will be for research infrastructure that will advance the frontiers of discovery in any of the research domains supported by NSF.2 These forthcoming funding opportunities are intended to encompass research infrastructure broadly defined, from the creation of mid-scale disciplinary instrumentation to the implementation (including acquisition and construction) of mid-scale facilities, cyberinfrastructure and other infrastructure that are demonstrated to be necessary to support specific science, engineering or education research objectives associated with current or future NSF-supported research activities. This portfolio may also include mid-scale upgrades to existing research infrastructure. NSF anticipates that one solicitation will include an opportunity to propose Mid-scale RI projects with a total project cost of between approximately $6 million and approximately $20 million, pending the availability of funds. A second solicitation is expected to include an opportunity to propose Mid-scale RI projects with a total project cost of between approximately $20 million and approximately $70 million, pending the availability of funds.

The OPUS program seeks to provide opportunities for mid- to later-career investigators to develop new understanding of science in the fields supported by the Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) through two tracks of synthesis activities. OPUS: Mid-Career Synthesis. This track provides an opportunity for a mid-career researcher, defined as a candidate at the associate professor rank (or equivalent) to enable a new synthesis of their ongoing research. Synthesis is achieved by developing new research capabilities through collaboration with a mentor to enable new understanding of their research system and questions of interest. This track aims toprovide mid-career scientists with new capabilities toenhance their productivity, improve their retention as scientists, andensure a diverse scientific workforce that remains engaged in active research(including more women and minorities at high academic ranks). OPUS: Core Research Synthesis. This track provides an opportunity for an individual or a group of investigators to revisit and synthesize a significant body of their prior research in a way that will enable new understanding of their research system and questions of interest. This track would also be appropriate early enough in a career to produce unique, integrated insight useful both to the scientific community and to the development of the investigator's future career.

Purpose The purpose of this FOA is to support a network to enhance collaborations across NIA's 6 centers programs. These collaborations are intended to leverage NIA's substantial investments by fostering and sustaining the development of novel interdisciplinary efforts in aging research. This opportunity will provide resources to build additional infrastructure and establish specific collaborative activities that could include, but are not limited to, information and data exchange, meetings and conferences, pilot studies, research opportunities for early investigators, visiting scholar programs, dissemination, and other collaborative efforts. The successful awardee will involve all 6 centers programs. Background The National Institute on Aging supports 6 research centers programs: Alzheimer's Disease Centers Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers (OAICs) Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research (RCMARs) Edward R. Roybal Centers for Translation Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences of Aging Centers on the Demography and Economics of Aging These programs, comprised of over 80 individual centers across the US, are highly productive hubs of research activity that are advancing the science of aging in their individual areas of focus. As advances in one area have the potential to address obstacles to progress in another area, numerous opportunities exist for collaborations across different centers programs. However, these opportunities have been realized to only a limited degree to date.

The goal of this funding opportunity announcement is to (i) foster joint activities between US and Indian scientists on affordable diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, and (ii) address medical needs in low-resource settings, taking advantage of opportunities and technological advances, to aid the development of appropriate affordable medical devices. To address needs and opportunities, Indian and U.S. scientists will undertake a coordinated program that will involve collaborative, peer-reviewed research and technology development projects. Collaboration between engineers and scientists in the U.S. and India will be based on mutual benefit, trust, and a shared commitment to development of diagnostic or therapeutic technologies for people in low-resource settings.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is a new initiative to invite applications to participate in the Kidney Consortium as the Coordinating Center. The consortium Coordinating Center will manage activities of the consortium including research opportunities (e.g., the Opportunity Pool program), and facilitate communication of research results, data, and methods within the consortium and with the community.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications from small business concerns (SBCs) that propose development of a broad base of innovative technologies in biomedical computing, informatics, and Big Data Science that will support rapid progress in areas of scientific opportunity in biomedical research. It is expected that this research and development is conducted in the context of important biomedical and behavioral research problems. As such, applications are intended to develop enabling technologies that could apply to the interests of most NIH Institutes and Centers and range from basic biomedicine to research in all relevant organ systems and diseases. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is limited to those Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) of Rare Diseases Clinical Research Consortia (RDCRC) who received an NINDS award under the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN) program through RFA-TR-13-002, or an NCI award through RFA-OD-08-001. The purpose of this limited competition FOA is to allow these NINDS- and NCI-awarded consortia an opportunity to compete for another four years of participation in the RDCRN. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to build research infrastructure to promote external collaboration with the medical rehabilitation community. The aim of this FOA is to create a national network of research cores that provide access to collateral expertise in biomedical, behavioral, engineering, and/or psychosocial fields that is particularly relevant to medical rehabilitation research. We are particularly interested in supporting infrastructure programs in clinical trial design, engineering and the environment, individualized medical rehabilitation and dynamic reassessment, and applied behavioral supports for rehabilitation research and healthy outcomes. However, other areas of expertise may be proposed provided they offer unique research opportunities and have potential for promoting medical rehabilitation research and improving outcomes for people with disabilities. In response to this FOA, applicants should propose a program of research resources and collaborative opportunities in a specific research domain. This may be accomplished through a workshops, written material, and websites, consultations, collaborations, and pilot funding. In addition, the research core may support activities within the grantee institution related to technique development, adaptation, and validation. The BMFRP Idea Development Award is intended to support innovative ideas and high-impact approaches based on scientifically sound evidence to move toward the BMFRP vision of understanding and curing BMF diseases. This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas. Proposed research studies should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and a developed and well-articulated research approach. Personnel on the proposed team should have a strong background in BMF research. This funding opportunity is open to established and early career investigators. New for FY15: To encourage the application of early career investigators to the FY15 Idea Development Award Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity, the FY15 BMFRP has included an opportunity for one or more scientifically meritorious applications from applicants fitting the outlined description of an early career investigator. All early career investigators will be assessed using different criteria for Personnel during the review process (Section III. B.1, Personnel). The definition of an early career investigator for the BMFRP is an investigator within 10 years of completing a terminal degree (doctorate or any medical degree), excluding time spent in medical residency, or during family medical leave. This should be clearly articulated by the applicant in the biographical sketch.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support important "legacy" resources developed as a result of NIGMS research activities that are central to the mission of NIGMS and demonstrate a high value to a community of researchers that NIGMS supports, but are no longer eligible for support under their original initiatives. It is also expected that these resources are not eligible for support by other Institutes'/Centers' funding opportunity announcements, and not yet self-sustaining or ready for commercialization. For this initiative, a resource is defined as a non-hypothesis-driven activity that is available to any qualified investigator and provides data, materials, tools, or services considered essential to making the most timely, high quality, and cost-efficient progress in a field. This funding opportunity is designed to support the continuation of existing resources, not to develop new ones. The support requested must be for funding of maintenance activities only, and not for research activities. Under this limited program, only NIGMS-sponsored "legacy" resources that cannot be renewed under their initial funding activity are eligible. Up to three years' support can be requested while plans to transition to a more permanent form of support are implemented.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for the establishment of a Technology Development Coordinating Center for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The Coordinating Center will be responsible for enhancing integration between components of the NHGRI Genome Technology program by facilitating opportunities for collaborations and leading efforts to promote standards in genomic technologies. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications to phenotype embryonic lethal knockout (KO) mouse strains being generated through the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) of which the NIH Knockout Mouse Phenotyping Program (KOMP2) is a member. It is estimated that KO mouse phenotyping efforts will generate 20,000 mouse strains over the next decade of which about 30% will be embryonic or perinatal lethal. A large portion of homozygous lethal mutations are expected to have viable heterozygous phenotypes. The scientific community has the unique opportunity to leverage these mouse strains while they are being created and bred as part of the IMPC adult mouse phenotyping effort.

The NIAID Radiation/Nuclear Countermeasures Development Program supports extramural research to develop safe and effective radiological/nuclear medical countermeasures for clinical use under emergency situations. This program spans basic through applied research. The role of the endovascular network in radiation injury pathogenesis is not well understood; however, the importance of this biological system in the observed multi-organ dysfunction and failure that occurs following radiation exposure has recently been established. The purpose of the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide an opportunity for academic, industry and government laboratory researchers to address gaps in the understanding of the pathophysiology of radiation injury in the vasculature, and how this damage contributes to overall mortality following radiation exposure. This funding will also advance the development of post-exposure treatment approaches targeting the vascular endothelium, with the ultimate goal of licensure of candidate medical countermeasures by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the radiation/nuclear public health emergency indication.

Research is sought that will characterize the extent to which basic behavioral and neural processes involved in decision-making are differentially impacted in normal aging and AD, investigate the influence of social factors on decision-making, and investigate the decision-making factors that render older adults (with or without cognitive impairment) vulnerable to financial exploitation and other forms of mistreatment and abuse. The FOA also invites applications to apply basic research on the processes involved in decision-making to the design of decision-supportive interventions for midlife and older adults with and without AD. Each year, around three Greenwall Faculty Scholars are selected to receive 50 percent salary support for three years to enable them to develop their research program. The program supports research focused on resolving pressing ethical issues in clinical care, biomedical research, and public policy. Scholars and alumni attend twice-yearly meetings, where they present their work in progress, receive feedback and mentoring from the Faculty Scholars Program Committee and other scholars, and have the opportunity to develop collaborations with other researchers. The ongoing involvement of alumni with the program provides them ongoing opportunities for professional development and feedback and engages them in mentoring of younger scholars.

Integrated Earth Systems (IES) is a program in the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) that focuses on the continental, terrestrial and deep Earth subsystems of the whole Earth system.  The overall goal of the program is to provide opportunity for collaborative, multidisciplinary research into the operation, dynamics and complexity of Earth systems at a budgetary scale between that of a typical project in the EAR Division's disciplinary programs and larger scale initiatives at the Directorate or Foundation level. Specifically, IES will provide research opportunities for the study of Earth systems from the core of the Earth to the top of the critical zone with a specific focus on subsystems that include continental, terrestrial and deep Earth subsystems at all temporal and spatial scales (NROES, 2012).  IES will provide opportunities to focus on Earth systems connected to topics which include (but are not limited to) the continents; the terrestrial, surficial Earth systems including physical, chemical and biotic dimensions; linkages among tectonics, climate, landscape change, topography and geochemical cycles including core and mantle processes.
