The purpose of the NHLBI Career Pathway to Independence in Blood Science Award for Physician Scientists (K99) is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NHLBI supported, independent investigators in blood science. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding blood science researchers with a clinical doctorate degree from mentored research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. Applicants who receive this award may submit an application for R00 funding, in the separate funding opportunity associated with this program, to help awardees launch competitive, independent research careers in blood science.

PART A -- Core Curricular Enhancements Strategic Direction A2 -- Promote educational enhancements that include transdisciplinary and interprofessional population health training Activity I: Medical Assistants Resources and Training on Immunization (MARTi) MARTi is a website http://www.marti-us.org/ hosted and updated by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). MARTi was developed to provide a collection of immunization training, education, and resource materials for medical assistants and those responsible for their training, such as office managers or supervisors. The website provides reviewed and credible training and education programs and resources specifically developed for the education and reading level of medical assistants. Activities will include the following: --Manage and update the website content and resources as new vaccine recommendations and best practices become available and redesign the navigation of the website to feature resources offering continuing education (CE) credits --Create newsletters and social media announcements --Develop responsive design website to provide access through mobile devices --Assemble a committee of experts to advance use of the website and recommend improvements. Committee will convene via conference call (3 or 4 times a year). The committee will consist of key groups including the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Professional Association of Healthcare Organization Management (PACHOM) as well as post-secondary institutions training future medical assistants. CDC will not direct or manage any aspects of the committee.

With more than fifty thousand members and certified professionals from ninety countries around the globe, the American College of Sports Medicine represents seventy occupations within the field of sports medicine. From academicians to students and from personal trainers to physicians, ACSM is dedicated to helping people worldwide live longer, healthier lives. To advance this mission, the association established the Research Grant Program through the ACSM Foundation, its charitable arm, in 1989. Through the program, grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to support basic and applied research in exercise science. Funding is primarily targeted to new or junior investigators within seven years of attaining a terminal degree (e.g., PhD, EdD) and is expected to provide seed money support after which further funding would be sought from other sources. Invasive surgical procedures provide the unique ability to record and stimulate neurons within precisely localized brain structures in humans. Human studies using invasive technology are often constrained by a limited number of patients and resources available to implement complex experimental protocols and are rarely aggregated in a manner that addresses research questions with appropriate statistical power. Therefore, this RFA seeks applications to assemble diverse, integrated, multi-disciplinary teams that cross boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration to overcome these fundamental barriers and to investigate high-impact questions in human neuroscience. Projects should maximize opportunities to conduct innovative in vivo neuroscience research made available by direct access to brain recording and stimulating from invasive surgical procedures. Projects should employ approaches guided by specified theoretical constructs and quantitative, mechanistic models where appropriate. Awardees will join a consortium work group, coordinated by the NIH, to identify consensus standards of practice, including neuroethical considerations, to collect and provide data for ancillary studies, and to aggregate and standardize data for dissemination among the wider scientific community.

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) seeks unclassified proposals for broad-based research and development aimed at using lasers and other light source technology to develop applications in medicine, photobiology, surgery, and closely related materials sciences, with applications to combat casualty care and other military medical problems. This announcement is primarily directed toward university-based medical institutions; however, all qualified and responsible prime applicants located in the United States are eligible to submit proposals. The highest priority will be extended to proposals up to three (3) years duration to be conducted by teams of physicians, biomedical scientists, physical scientists, and engineers. The efforts proposed may be basic or applied research, and must have direct relevance to combat casualty care or other military medical priorities. Applicants must demonstrate substantial experience working to further military medical priorities, including transitioning research into clinical practice and working products. Substantial experience collaborating with military medical centers is also a requirement to establish relevance to combat casualty care or other military medical priorities, and facilitate the transition of research results to meet military needs. Founded in 1972, the Tourette Association of America has emerged as the premier national nonprofit organization working to make life better for all people affected by Tourette and tic disorders. The association advances its work by raising public awareness and fostering social acceptance; working to advance scientific understanding, treatment options, and care; educating professionals to better serve the needs of children, adults, and families challenged by Tourette and tic disorders; advocating for public policies and services that promote positive school, work, and social environments; providing help, hope, and a supportive community across the nation; and empowering its community to deal with the complexities of this spectrum of disorders. To that end, grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for basic and clinical studies related to any aspect of Tourette syndrome. To be eligible, investigators are required to have an advanced degree such as a PhD, MD, or equivalent or be an allied professional with an advanced degree in a related field. Investigators from nonprofit and for-profit organizations are eligible to apply. Pre-proposals must be received no later than November 1, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by February 15, 2018.

The American Psychological Foundation provides financial support for innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential, both today and for generations to come. As part of this mission, APF is accepting applications for its APF Trauma Psychology Grant. Through the annual program, a single grant of up to $3,000 will be awarded in support innovative work aimed at alleviating trauma. To be eligible, applicants must be an early-career psychologist (no more than ten years postdoctoral); be affiliated with a nonprofit charitable, educational, or scientific institution, or governmental entity operating exclusively for charitable and educational purposes; have a demonstrated knowledge of trauma and trauma research; have demonstrated competence and capacity to execute the proposed work; and, if human participants are involved, have IRB approval from his/her host institution before funding can be awarded.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement invites applications to establish NINR P30 Center of Excellence. The purpose of the NINR P30 Centers of Excellence is to support shared resources and facilities for categorical research by a number of scientists who focus on a common research problem. The core grant is integrated with the center's component projects or program projects, though funded independently from them. This support, by providing more accessible resources, is expected to assure a greater productivity than from the separate projects and program projects.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications from institutions/organizations proposing original research aimed at the characterization and discovery of neoantigens and neoepitopes in type 1 diabetes. These include the characterization of the humoral and cell mediated autoimmune responses elicited by these neoepitopes and neoantigens and their role in the etiology and pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes. These studies should be integrated with the present knowledge of established epitopes and antigens (e.g. autoantibodies for insulin, GAD65, IA-2, and ZnT8T).

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking a Data Coordinating Center (DCC) for biospecimen and consent related activities for the Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry. SDY is a tragic event with longstanding impact on families and communities. Although the causes of SDY are myriad, sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), sudden cardiac death and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) are three examples that have inspired public health efforts at prevention. Yet fundamental gaps in knowledge about incidence, mechanisms, and risk factors for SDY limit the identification of effective prevention efforts. This acquisition is for one contract for a SDY Data Coordinating Center with subcontracts and/or other mechanisms as needed to accomplish all necessary work described in the Statement of Work.

The NIH Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub (REACH) program is envisioned as a partnership program between NIH and the qualifying research institutions to accelerate the creation of small businesses and the transition of discoveries originating from academic research into products that improve health. REACH Hubs will foster the advancement of therapeutics, preventatives, diagnostics, devices, and tools in a manner consistent with business case development, that address the needs of patients and public health.

The functionality of the NeuroImaging Tools and Resources Collaboratory (NITRC) has enabled three distinct components to flourish: Resources Registry (NITRC-R): a collaboratory enabling the distribution, enhancement, and adoption of neuroimaging tools and resources. Image Repository (NITRC-IR): a curated repository of free neuroimaging datasets meeting global standards. Computational Environment (NITRC-CE): a freely downloadable or pay-as-you-go virtual computing cloud-based platform that is pre-configured with popular neuroimaging tools. NITRC-R has become the major web-based collaborative environment enabling the distribution, enhancement, and adoption of neuroinformatics resources. It currently hosts more than 1,000 tools and resources in areas such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), optical imaging, positron emission tomography/single-photon emission computed tomography (PET/SPECT), electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography/electrocorticography (EEG/MEG/ECoG), computational neuroscience, and imaging genomics. Since NITRC's inception, there have been more than 10 million total downloads of tools from NITRC-R.

The primary goal of this Institutional Research Training Grant is to provide a short-term training for medical students to obtain necessary aging research experiences and technical expertise and skills early during their education to encourages them to pursue career in research.

ASPEN is accepting applications to its annual Rhoads Research Foundation Grants program. Through the program, grants of $25,000 (renewable for one year) and $10,000 (non-renewable) will be awarded to exceptional early-career investigators in support of clinical metabolic and nutrition support research in alignment with the priorities outlined in the ASPEN Research Agenda. Research supported by the foundation includes both basic science-oriented investigations aimed at improving the understanding of the science of nutrient regulation in different disease states, as well as clinical and translational research to determine how the practice of nutrition support can continue to be refined and individualized to optimize clinical outcomes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) proposes to allocate funds to implement Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) PS18-1807, “Promoting Adolescent Health through School-Based HIV/STD Prevention.” The project period will be 5 years, with a 12-month budget period and an anticipated award date of August 1, 2018. This NOFO will provide support for education agencies and NGOs to help school districts and schools develop and implement sustainable program activities to: 1) Reduce HIV infection and other STDs among adolescents; and 2) Reduce disparities in risk for HIV infection and other STD infection. Throughout the 5-year cooperative agreement, awardees will conduct activities demonstrated to improve the health of middle school and high school students by collection and use of quality surveillance data, the implementation of effective prevention practices, and demonstration and evaluation of innovative strategies within their jurisdictions.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications from institutions/organizations proposing research on the use of current and emerging technologies for monitoring of blood glucose levels to capture the relationship between blood glucose excursions, perception of wellbeing, and cognitive status in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This information will inform the design of more effective interventions that may improve patient reported outcomes (PROs), including quality of life measures, and validate glycemic measures that may serve as outcomes in clinical trials to improve glucose management in T1D.

The Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems (CNH) Program supports interdisciplinary research that examines human and natural system processes and the complex interactions among human and natural systems at diverse scales. Research projects to be supported by CNH must include analyses of four different components: (1) the dynamics of a natural system; (2) the dynamics of a human system; (3) the processes through which the natural system affects the human system; and (4) the processes through which the human system affects the natural system. CNH also supports research coordination networks (CNH-RCNs) designed to facilitate activities that promote future research by broad research communities that will include all four components necessary for CNH funding.

This FOA encourages research relevant to the development of therapeutic interventions for potentially fatal or disabling conditions that have been identified through newborn screening, as well as "high priority" genetic conditions where screening may be possible in the near future. Demonstrating the benefits of treatment is often a primary criterion for including a condition on a newborn screening panel; therefore, this FOA, a "high priority" condition is one where screening is not currently recommended but would significantly benefit from early identification and treatment.
