    This NOFO builds upon the achievements so far made in strengthening the health systems ability to achieve HIV epidemic control in Ethiopia and supports the implementation of comprehensive HIV/AIDS programs in the four emerging regions focusing on priority scale-up and sustained sub-national units (SNUs). The recipient will also provide technical assistance (TA) to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and seven Regional Health Bureaus (RHBs) having direct awards with CDC - including two city administrations - and other government organizations as appropriate, with the ultimate goal of strengthening local ownership and attaining the UNAIDS 90-90-90 goals for epidemic control of HIV/AIDS. The recipient will ensure that adequate capacity is built at the RHB and lower SNU levels for a gradual transition of activities considered to be matured, including site-level activities implemented in the four emerging regions. The nature of TA during the 5 year project period may change depending on program dynamics and readiness of organizations in the emerging regions as well as TA recipients. The recipient will also be engaged in planning and rolling-out support of new US and host government initiatives and interventions developed to improve performance and achieve targets set to achieve epidemic control in top priority SNUs.

    NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) has released solicited research response area NRA 80JSC017N0001-BPBA "Topics in Biological, Physiological, and Behavioral Adaptations to Spaceflight: Integrated One Year Mission Project and Other Opportunities" that solicits applied research in support of HRP goals and objectives. The first topic in the solicitation is for proposals in the area of Analyses of the Temporal Nature of Human Adaptation to Long-Duration Low-Earth Orbit Missions. HRP has a requirement for sufficient crewmember experience at one year in spaceflight to demonstrate the presence or absence of unacceptable deleterious physiological, psychological and medical effects of spaceflight on human health and performance beyond the experience base of six-month expeditions and to permit extrapolation to early interplanetary expeditions with durations of up to two to three years. Therefore, HRP is proposing an integrated One-Year Mission Project on the International Space Station (ISS) consisting of five one-year missions five standard-duration six-month missions paralleling the year-long expeditions, and five short-duration crew vehicle exchange expeditions lasting up to two months to occur at the mid-point of each 1YM. Proposals are solicited by NASA in the additional areas of Biological, Physiological, and Behavioral Functions of Mice during Partial (0 - 1) G-Exposures Provided by Centrifugation on the International Space Station; Novel Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome Hypotheses and Countermeasures; Medical Countermeasures Targeting Multiple Tissues at Risk from Exposure to Space Radiation; Individual and Team Problem-Solving Skills Training for Exploration Missions; Sensory Stimulation for Cognitive and Behavioral Health; and Human Capabilities Assessments for Autonomous Missions (HCAAM) Virtual NASA Specialized Center of Research.

RFA-MH-21-100: Fine-Mapping Genome-Wide Associated Loci to Identify Proximate Causal Me... - 0 views

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identify statistical relationships between common single nucleotide variants (SNVs) across the genome and a trait of interest. Due to the correlated nature of nearby SNVs (i.e., linkage disequilibrium), GWAS implicate regions of the genome (loci) and do not necessarily pinpoint the causal variant(s), gene(s), isoform(s) or proximate molecular mechanism(s) underlying the trait association. Greater than 90% of genome-wide significant variants associated with traits fall within non-coding regions of the genome. A minority of these variants will be the actual causal variants and a majority will not affect the nearest genes. Moreover, functional annotation of the non-coding genome is still incomplete; the target genes of many genomic regulatory elements such as enhancers remain unknown. This presents a major challenge to mapping variants onto genes and genes onto traits. Thus, an immediate barrier to translating genetic associations into causal disease mechanisms is the uncertain relationship between statistically identified genetic variants and the resultant molecular changes influencing, directly or indirectly, a trait.

    The Clinician-Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Coordinating Center is seeking to fund pilot or planning grants that aim to stimulate new collaborations focused on the development of clinical aging research projects. A major goal of this effort is to bridge junior and senior researchers from different disciplines and institutions in order to stimulate new areas of clinical aging research. Funding may be used to collect preliminary data in emerging and understudied areas of aging-related clinical research. The funding also provides opportunities to build mentee/mentor relationships and content expertise for the junior investigator. The Clin-STAR Coordinating Center has set aside $160,000 to fund at least 3 projects. Size and number of awards will depend on the nature of the proposals.

    The National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) acknowledges the need to expand and chronicle educational change efforts across the nation.  To this end, DUE invites proposals to study the impact of the Vision and Change (V&C) movement in Undergraduate Biology Education. Specifically, this program seeks to support projects that evaluate a combination of factors such as the awareness, acceptance, adoption, and adaptation of V&C principles and outcomes including changes in curriculum, laboratories, and student retention, completion, and learning. Collectively, results of these projects are anticipated to describe the nature and extent of V&C's use within the undergraduate biology curriculum. The projects could also describe key factors and approaches taken by the V&C community that have the potential to be useful for improving undergraduate education in other scientific disciplines or in interdisciplinary STEM education.

The mission of the NIEHS is to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives. The NIEHS Superfund Research Program (SRP) (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/supported/srp/) was established under the Superfund Amendment Reauthorization Act (SARA) Section 311(a), which authorizes NIEHS to implement a university-based program of basic research for the development of: 1) advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the effect of hazardous substances on human health; 2) methods to assess the risks to human health presented by hazardous substances; 3) methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment; and 4) basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and/or toxicity of hazardous substances. SRP's broad scope, as dictated by the SARA mandates, allows NIEHS to support scientific research to address the wide array of scientific uncertainties facing the national Superfund program utilizing biomedical as well as environmental science and engineering approaches. Research supported by the SRP uses mechanistic science as a foundation and, in keeping with the broad research themes of the program mandates, the SRP promotes an interdisciplinary approach to develop solutions for the safe management of hazardous substances with the ultimate goal of improving public health.
