The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage small businesses to address the technological needs of the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP). The KPMP will obtain and evaluate kidney biopsies from participants with acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), create a kidney tissue atlas, define disease subgroups, and identify critical cells, pathways and targets for novel therapies. Research is encouraged in the following high priority diseases within the scientific mission areas of the NIDDK: diabetes; obesity; nutrition-related disorders; hepatitis C; gallbladder disease; H. Pylori infection; sickle cell disease, specifically, studies in complications of sickle cell disease within the NIDDK mission areas; kidney diseases; urologic diseases; hematologic diseases, including studies in abnormal hemoglobin synthesis; metabolic diseases; gastrointestinal, hepatic, and renal complications from infection with HIV. Clinical trials are not permitted in response to this FOA.

The National Kidney Foundation is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease, and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. To that end, the organization welcomes applications for its Young Investigator Grant Program. Through the program, grants of up to $35,000 will be awarded to promising young scientists who have had nephrology training in support of patient-centered research. Funding for a second year of support is not guaranteed, although the investigator may request an additional year's funding as a competitive renewal. Elements of patient-oriented research activities may include but are not limited to development of new technologies, mechanisms of human disease, educational or therapeutic interventions, epidemiological studies, health policy studies, and clinical trials. To be eligible, applicants must hold a full-time appointment at a university or an equivalent position as a scientist on the staff of a research-oriented institution in the U.S., and must be no more than four years past their initial appointment to a faculty (or equivalent) position or appointment to a staff scientist (or equivalent) position in a research organization.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support basic and clinical mechanistic research on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) susceptibility, routes of infection, course of disease, morbidity and mortality in people with pre-existing diseases, or adverse acute or chronic outcomes in organs, tissues, and biological systems of specific interest to NIDDK. These include diabetes and other metabolic diseases, obesity, and endocrine, digestive, liver, pancreas, kidney, urological, and hematologic tissues and diseases.

The Chronic Kidney Disease Biomarkers Consortium [CKD BioCon] was established in September 2009 as a result of RFA-DK-08-015 [Chronic Kidney Disease Biomarker Discovery and Validation Consortium (U01)] to develop, validate and qualify biomarkers based on existing biosamples from well-characterized CKD patients with longitudinal follow-up. The second phase of the CKD BioCon was funded in September 2014, pursuant to RFA-DK-14-011.  Two additional Centers were brought into the Consortium in 2015.  The CKD BioCon currently consists of eight Participating Clinical Centers (PCCs) and is actively engaged in multiple research protocols.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support Exploratory/Developmental Research Grants (R21) that propose small scale or pilot and feasibility clinical and translational research studies, including epidemiological studies or clinical trials related to kidney disease research. Studies should address important clinical and translational questions and are potentially of high clinical and public health impact. It is anticipated that some projects supported by these grants may lead to full-scale clinical studies including diagnostic strategies, epidemiological studies, or randomized clinical trials of diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of kidney diseases.

The American Kidney Fund is inviting applications for its Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) Program. For more than thirty years, the CSN fellowship program has funded researchers whose work is designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of and outcomes for patients living with chronic kidney disease. CSN fellows conduct prevention and outcomes research while receiving advanced training in essential skills such as medical ethics, biostatistics, and epidemiology.

This FOA will provide support for assays (and associated data analysis) of repository-held samples for studies focused on an NIDDK relevant disease.  The review of applications to this FOA will consider both access to repository-held samples and funding for assays using the samples.  These studies are expected to generate scientific discoveries on disease mechanisms, disease pathogenic processes, disease progression, or clinical responses.  Projects that make good use of the associated data from the clinical trials and studies, the original intent of the clinical study and/or trial are highly encouraged.  Exploratory studies and discovery research are encouraged especially when samples are not severely limited, the work is justified, and the goal is consistent with the original intent of the clinical research.

The NIDDK invites Cooperative Agreement applications for an open  competition for the Central Biochemistry Laboratory (CBL) of The Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) consortium.  The CBL will work cooperatively with the existing Clinical Coordinating Centers (CCCs) and Data Coordinating Center (DCC) of the study as a Consortium. Participant evaluations in some domains will be expanded, and follow-up will extend beyond the onset of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
