Avenir means future in French, and this award looks toward the future by supporting early stage investigators proposing highly innovative studies. The award will support those in an early stage of their career who may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant, but who propose high impact research and who show promise of being tomorrow's leaders in the field. NIDA has developed two Avenir Award Programs, one for HIV/AIDS research and the other for genetics or epigenetics studies. The Genetics or Epigenetics of Substance Use Disorders Avenir Award program supports early stage investigators proposing highly innovative studies that open new areas of research for the genetics or epigenetics of addiction. These may be novel methods or approaches that can potentially be applied to the analysis of the genetics or epigenetics of addiction. Investigators outside the field of addiction interested in applying their novel approaches to the genetics or epigenetics of addiction are encouraged to apply. The award will support those in an early stage of their career who may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant, but who propose high impact research and who show promise of being tomorrow's leaders in the field of genetics or epigenetics of substance use disorders.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for mechanistic research on age-related changes in emotion regulation and how they may contribute to mental disorders in middle-aged and older adults.In particular, research is sought that will advance understanding of irregularities in the integrative neural-behavioral mechanisms of emotion regulation in adult mood and anxiety disorders, and that will examine whether the irregularities are associated with typical or atypical maturational trajectories of emotion processing. If older adults who suffer episodes of affective dysregulation share the same patterns of improved emotional function with age as have been found to be typical of the older adult population in general, understanding of the irregularities involved their dysregulation.It is anticipated that such studies may identify novel targets for mental health interventions or prevention efforts, or provide clues as to which available intervention strategies might be optimally applied to normalize emotion dysregulation or to strengthen emotional resilience at particular stages of the adult life cycle.

The purpose of this NOFO is to enhance the capacity of surveillance programs to implement a population-based, multiple source surveillance program for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The project will fund sites to participate in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network and will enhance surveillance activities at both prior and newly participating sites through two funding components. Component A is required for all applicants, while applying for Component B funding is optional. Component A funds surveillance of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among 4-year-old and 8-year-old children. Component A activities include: adhere to standardized ADDM Network methodology; renew or establish agreements for access to BOTH health and education data sources (electronic and paper records); staff training and continued education; report clean, de-identified data with vital records/census linkages to CDC; submit at least two manuscripts; engage partners and stakeholders in activities aimed at increasing use of ADDM data; and create and implement a strategic plan for performance monitoring and evaluation. Component B funds conducting follow-up at age 16 years of children abstracted for ASD at age 8 years in 2010 and 2012, including collecting data on characteristics, functioning, and educational service delivery (including transition planning). These data will inform public health strategies to improve identification and services for children with ASD.

The program's goal is to organize multidisciplinary, team-based translational research efforts to: Identify promising compounds; Conduct proof-of-principle basic research to determine which compounds are most appropriate for human research trials; Conduct human proof-of-concept trials with promising compounds.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to accelerate the discovery and development of medications to treat Cannabis Use Disorders (CUDs) using the UG3/UH3 mechanism. The objective is to advance medications toward the ultimate goal of obtaining FDA approval. Advances in understanding the cannabinoid systems and the effects of marijuana on the brain, coupled with the availability of both novel and marketed medications that may be efficacious to treat these disorders, offer unprecedented opportunities to develop safe and effective pharmacotherapies for CUDs. The compounds to be evaluated can be small molecules or biologics. They can be tested in pre-clinical models and/or for the clinical manifestations of CUDs or their consequences such as withdrawal, craving, or cannabis use relapse. Applications may focus on the development of new chemical entities, new formulations of marketed medications available for other indications, or combinations of medications that hold promise for the treatment of CUDs. The UG3/UH3 Phase Innovation Awards Cooperative Agreement involves 2 phases. The UG3 is to support a project with specific milestones to be accomplished by the end of the 2-year period. The UH3 is to provide funding for 3 years to a project that successfully completed the milestones set in the UG3. UG3 projects that have met their milestones will be administratively considered by NIDA and prioritized for transition to the UH3 phase. Investigators responding to this FOA must address both UG3 and UH3 phases.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2019 Mental and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Practitioner Data grant. The purpose of this program is to provide comprehensive data and analysis on individuals who comprise the prevention and treatment fields to address mental and substance use disorders. The goal of the program is to provide valid data on the existing practitioners and usable information to SAMHSA on which to make policy and planning decisions.

To allow investigators time to plan and develop applications, the TSCRP is providing its strategic plan for award mechanisms to be offered in 2013 should funding become available. Congressional funds for the FY13 TSCRP have not yet been appropriated, and this document is not to be construed as an obligation by the government; there is no guarantee of funding for these planned mechanisms. Areas of Focus: The FY13 TSCRP encourages research projects applications that specifically address the critical needs of theTSC community in the following areas of focus: Genetic, epigenetic, and non-genetic modifiers of TSC. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of TSC and LAM pathogenesis. Understanding the mechanism and improving the treatment of epilepsy in TSC. Understanding the mechanism and improving treatment of TSC-associated neurocognitive disorders (TAND) including cognitive impairment, and psychiatric, behavioral, and sleep disorders.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks Research Project Grant (R01) applications that propose to use a common conceptual model to develop behavioral interventions to modify health behaviors and improve health outcomes in patients with comorbid chronic diseases and health conditions. Specifically, this FOA will support research in primary care that uses a multi-disease care management approach to behavioral interventions with high potential impact to improve patient-level health outcomes for individuals with three or more chronic health conditions. The proposed approach must modify behaviors using a common approach rather than administering a distinct intervention for each targeted behavior and/or condition. Diseases and health conditions can include, but are not limited to: mental health disorders (e.g., depression), diabetes, smoking, obesity, chronic pain, alcohol and substance abuse and dependence, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, cancer and hypertension.

The $20,000 grant supports "exceptional individuals working in the area of serious mental illness," including but not limited to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and paranoia (delusional disorder). The Autism Science Foundation is inviting applications for its Pre- and Postdoctoral Training Awards and Medical School Gap Year Research Training Awards from graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing careers in basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders. The proposed training must be scientifically linked to autism and may be broadened to include training in a closely related area of scientific research, including but not limited to human behavior across the lifespan (language, learning, behavior, communication, social function, motor skills and planning, epilepsy, sleep, repetitive disorders); neurobiology (anatomy, development, neuroimaging); pharmacology; neuropathology; genetics; epigenetics; genomics; epigenomics; immunology; molecular and cellular mechanisms; studies employing model organisms and systems; and studies of treatment and service delivery.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIAAA/NIDA R25 program is to support educational activities that foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research on alcohol and other substance use disorders and their implications. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Outreach. Specifically, this FOA will support projects designed to engage practicing health care professionals in education about current and emerging knowledge derived from scientific research on the neurobiology, epidemiology, prevention, and/or treatment of alcohol and other substance use disorders and related health conditions.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to seek applications on novel genetic mechanisms underlying the development of tolerance and the progression to alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorders are complex, multifactorial, and influenced both by genetic and environmental factors. The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate and support efforts on identifying genetic, genomic and epigenetic factors contributing to the development of sensitivity and tolerance to alcohol.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) applications from small business concerns (SBCs) that propose the development of therapeutic agents for disorders that fall under the mission of NIAAA.  An identified candidate, having sufficient bioactivity, stability, manufacturability, bioavailability, in vivo efficacy and/or target engagement, and other favorable properties that are consistent with the desired clinical application, is required prior to application. The FOA supports Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling studies for the therapeutic candidate. At the end of the funding period, a successful project should have, at a minimum, an IND application submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Enhancement and Expansion of Treatment and Recovery Services for Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and their Families grant program (Short Title: Youth and Family TREE). The purpose of this program is to enhance and expand comprehensive treatment, early intervention, and recovery support services for adolescents (ages 12-18), transitional aged youth (ages 16-25), and their families/primary caregivers with substance use disorders (SUD) and/or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders.

The purpose of this IHS cooperative agreement is to increase access to community-based prevention strategies to provide social detoxification, evaluation, stabilization, fostering patient readiness for and entry into treatment for alcohol use disorders and when appropriate, other substance use disorders. Applicants must have a fully operational and staffed social detoxification program that provides all three critical components of the detoxification process that primarily serves Indians. Indian Health Service (IHS) will use this funding to focus on the provision of services in the Navajo and Great Plains Areas. Congress has highlighted that the community of Gallup, New Mexico, continues to face urgent needs for substance abuse treatment, residential services, and detoxification services to address an ongoing crisis of alcohol-related deaths of Tribal members. Senate Appropriations Committee Report 114-281 expressed the Committee's expectation that IHS use funds provided in its appropriation to continue its assistance toward addressing this issue in the city of Gallup, New Mexico. Additionally, IHS is aware of the urgent need for alcohol detoxification services in the Great Plains Area after the removal of liquor licenses in White Clay, Nebraska, leading to the potential for increased mortality if services are unavailable for alcohol detoxification and subsequent treatment services.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages the submission of investigator-initiated research grant applications to support research investigating the epidemiology of alcohol use, alcohol-related harms, and alcohol use disorders and the prevention of underage drinking, alcohol-related harms, and alcohol use disorders. Two-year grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded to implement children's mental health evidence-based practices in the region. In 2018, preference will be given in support of programs to advance access to effective prevention, screening, early identification, and mental health treatment interventions for children and young people up to the age of 21. Priority will be given to developmental screening, assessment, and mental health treatment models in early childhood settings for children; pediatric screening, assessment, diagnosis, and behavioral health treatment models in school-based clinics and primary care settings; screening, assessment, and behavioral health treatment models in the child welfare and foster care systems; collaborative court diversion programs designed to divert children and young people with mental health disorders or co-occurring mental health/substance abuse disorders from the corrections systems into treatment and support services; and/or best practice psychotherapy behavioral health treatment programs.

Through the program, grants will be awarded to graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows in support of training in basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders. The foundation will consider all areas of related basic and clinical research, including but not limited to human behavior across the lifespan (language, learning, behavior, communication, social function, motor skills and planning, epilepsy, sleep, repetitive disorders); neurobiology (anatomy, development, neuroimaging); pharmacology; behavioral intervention; neuropathology; genetics and gene/environment interactions; epigenetics; genomics; epigenomics; immunology; molecular and cellular mechanisms; studies employing model organisms and systems; and studies of treatment and service delivery.

The purpose of this program is to (1) enhance services for all students at risk for suicide, depression, serious mental illness, and substance use disorders that can lead to school failure; (2) prevent mental and substance use disorders; (3) promote help-seeking behavior and reduce stigma; and (4) improve the identification and treatment of at-risk students so that students can successfully complete their studies. The goal is to assist campuses in developing a comprehensive, collaborative, and well-coordinated approach to support prevention efforts and early identification and intervention activities with students at risk for suicide, serious mental illness, and/or substance related overdose or injury.
