PA-18-507: Effects of In Utero Alcohol Exposure on Adult Health and Disease (R01 - Clin... - 0 views

  •
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), is intended to support novel research on how prenatal alcohol exposure may contribute to the etiology of chronic diseases and health conditions later in life. Central to this theme is the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) concept which suggests that fetal adaptations in response to adverse intrauterine conditions may increase the risk for childhood and adulthood disease. The goal of this FOA is to stimulate a broad range of research to: 1) leverage existing prospective birth cohorts to define the role of maternal alcohol consumption in the DOHaD process; 2) investigate the biological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms by which prenatal alcohol exposure may impact disease outcomes later in life; and 3) identify biomarkers associated with gestational alcohol exposure that may predict adult disease susceptibility in exposed offspring. Studies supported by this FOA will provide fundamental insights into a possible fetal-basis to adult disease that is influenced by maternal alcohol use. Also listed under R01

Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers ... - 0 views

  •
NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) is a comprehensive national initiative designed to enhance U.S. leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) discoveries and innovations by focusing on broadening participation in these fields at scale. The vision of NSF INCLUDES is to catalyze the STEM enterprise to collaboratively work for inclusive change, which will result in a STEM workforce that reflects the population of the Nation. The initiative is developing a National Network composed of NSF INCLUDES Design and Development Launch Pilots, NSF INCLUDES Alliances, an NSF INCLUDES Coordination Hub, NSF-funded broadening participation projects, other relevant NSF-funded projects, scholars engaged in broadening participation research, and other organizations that support the development of talent from all sectors of society to build an inclusive STEM workforce.

PAR-20-031: Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) Research (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) - 0 views

  •
Nearly 75% of US households have pets. The decreasing size of families, with the reduction in the number of younger siblings, babies, and elderly from family homes, means that many children may be more likely to grow up with an animal than with a younger sibling or grandparent in the home. It has been documented in the literature that pets offer a source of emotional support to children, and studies suggest they may be helpful to prevent allergies, ease anxiety and encourage exercise. However, most of the studies focusing on how animals affect children's health, development and well-being are correlational and stop short of providing answers to key developmental questions and establishing causal relationships. Likewise, most studies conducted to date have not included diverse samples that would allow researchers to examine possible cultural, racial or ethnic differences in HAI.

Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) (nsf20525) | NSF - National Science F... - 0 views

  •
The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Activities pursued by early-career faculty should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from early-career faculty at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

Maine Cancer Foundation Invites Applications for Projects to Reduce Tobacco Use | RFPs ... - 0 views

  •
Lung cancer is responsible for more deaths in Maine than any other cancer, and the state's lung cancer rates are consistently higher than the national average. One in five Maine residents use tobacco, with half identifying as former or current cigarette smokers. With the goal of reducing tobacco use and ultimately reducing the burden of lung cancer in the state, the Maine Cancer Foundation is accepting proposals for projects that seek to reduce the use of tobacco in Maine. Through the program, grants of up to $50,000 a year for up to two years will be awarded in support of new or existing projects. Eligible projects include tobacco cessation for adults; advocacy or policy projects related to tobacco use and/or second-hand smoke; projects that address Maine populations disproportionately impacted by tobacco; and a combination of these. Collaborations between organizations are encouraged.

PAR-19-288: Limited Competition: NIA Genome Center for Alzheimer's Disease (U54 Clinica... - 0 views

  •
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to continue the operations of the NIA Genome Center for Alzheimer's Disease (GCAD) to facilitate and support the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP) activities. GCAD will serve as the focal point for all phases of ADSP quality control checking, data harmonization, and meta-analysis. The FOA is intended to support a major component of the full range of analysis for the ADSP. The spectrum of the Center's activities comprises a multidisciplinary attack on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD), in keeping with NIA's programmatic needs. The Center will serve as a national resource for the specific purpose of identifying potential avenues for therapeutic approaches and prevention of the disease.

RFA-AG-20-025: Understanding Senescence in Brain Aging and Alzheimer's Disease (R01 Cli... - 0 views

  •
The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research focused on understanding the role of senescence in brain aging and in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This FOA encourages research projects addressing critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of the neurobiology of senescence through cutting-edge techniques, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and/or conceptual innovation, leveraging what is known about senescence in peripheral tissues to learn more about brain aging. Developing a clear understanding of the mechanisms driving aging processes in the brain, including senescence, is essential for combating age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

RFA-AG-20-017: Lucidity in Dementia (R21/R33 Clinical Trial Optional) - 0 views

  •
Fluctuations in mental status occur commonly in dementia. Such fluctuations vary by dementia type and are most apparent in earlier stages of disease. However, even in late-stage dementia, patients have been reported to exhibit unexpected episodes of mental clarity or lucidity, characterized by spontaneous meaningful and relevant communication at a time when the capacity for coherent speech has presumably been lost.
