    Public lands in New Mexico are home to many thousands of unique and irreplaceable archaeological, historical, and paleontological resources that represent human history and millions of years of biological prehistory. BLM Cultural and Paleontological Resource Management Programs coordinate the management, preservation, and educational outreach efforts for these resources. The Cultural Resources Management Program manages and preserves the archaeological and historical locations, structures, and objects that represent a unique component of our national heritage. This program also engages with Native American tribes and the public as stakeholders in these resources. BLM New Mexico's Paleontology Program manages and preserves paleontological resources as a fragile, nonrenewable scientific record and an important component of America's natural heritage. These programs manage these archaeological, historical, and paleontological resources, or ⿿heritage resources,⿝ for educational, scientific, cultural, and recreational values.

Natural Resource Management and Cultural Resources Education - 0 views

    This project represents an opportunity to enter into a cooperative agreement for cultural resources outreach, education and training to further effective cultural resource management on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Project lands. Stewardship of historic and cultural resources can be achieved by educating students, Corps staff, and public and private landowners holding outgrant leases, easements or licenses on USACE lands. A cooperative agreement with an educational institution will provide educational benefits and awareness to college students, interns, volunteers, neighbors, frequent users, the general public and future stewards of the sites, and provide benefits to the community of which these USACE sites are a part. The program would provide job training, education, and early career development for college-level students in archaeology, anthropology, and natural / cultural resource management. Students will learn appropriate survey and monitoring methods, field techniques, archival research, regulations and policy, and the latest technology to document and analyze cultural sites and historic properties.

Ethnographic Overview and Assessment for Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument - 0 views

    This project will develop an Ethnographic Overview and Assessment (EOA) baseline cultural anthropological study which aims to document traditional associations between distinct cultural communities and landscapes, places or resources. In partnering with traditionally associated tribes and distinct cultural communities, this project will identify and provide descriptions of resources and sites of cultural importance within Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, from the perspective of the associated groups themselves. A key goal of this project will be to provide baseline ethnographic documentation in a manner that is accessible to park staff and visitors, researchers and managers, interpreters and educators. To date, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument has never conducted an EOA. Ethnographic research is essential to preserve, manage and interpret Florissant Fossil Beds National Monumentâ¿¿s cultural and natural resources in an effective, culturally informed manner. This project will identify and document culturally significant resources and contribute to the development and implementation of culturally appropriate resource management strategies at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.

Bandelier Archeological Inventory, 2016-2020 MOD - 0 views

    Bandelier National Monument seeks to cooperatively inventory remaining areas of backcountry lands that are likely to contain cultural resources. Almost 98% of all park lands have been inventoried for cultural resources. Six hundred and fifteen (615) acres remain to be inventoried. An estimated 75-90 archaeological sites are located within the remaining survey units. The objective of the inventory is to locate cultural resources within the project areas using systematic pedestrian survey methods and to document resources according to established park guidelines. The methods employed during the inventory will closely match those of the Bandelier Archaeological Survey (⿿BAS⿝; Powers and Orcutt 1999) in so far as to create comparable data, with some important exceptions, as noted below. The inventory will be accomplished using the established safety plan, which will include job hazard analyses.

BLM-CO Archaeology and Cultural Resources Study Project, Tres Rios Field Office - 0 views

    Archaeological resources belong to all Americans and provide the history and context of our society. A primary goal of the BLM cultural resource program is to work in the public's interest so that archaeological knowledge may be shared and learned. The objective of this agreement is to share an appreciation for American history and culture, through a variety of strategies, such as through social media platforms, in order to increase public awareness, knowledge and support for historic preservation, stewardship, and interpretation of the nation's cultural and historical heritage. The Mesa Verde Escarpment is located on Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) lands and is immediately adjacent to the iconic Mesa Verde National Park and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. Limited past fieldwork in this region has revealed highly significant sites that are critical to understanding the prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan lifeways across the Mesa Verde cultural landscape. The Mesa Verde Escarpment has a rich archaeological record spanning over 10,000 years and possesses the densest concentration of Ancestral Puebloan habitation sites on public lands, and retains areas of traditional and scared values to over 27 Native American tribes found in the region today. The temporal span and distribution of sites indicate the area was consistently inhabited from Basketmaker III period through Pueblo III (A.D. 600-1,300). More specifically, the Tres Rios Field Office (TRFO) seeks a partner for the purpose of developing and implementing cultural resource projects to amplify public education and outreach efforts, with a specific emphasis on the Mesa Verde Escarpment region.

Mitigation of Cultural Resources impacted by use and erosion of unmaintained 4WD roads ... - 0 views

    This project aims to use digital data recovery techniques to perform a complete archeological survey of at least 10 miles of 4WD dirt road corridors and adjacent localized watersheds (~2100 acres) within the Maze District to identify, record and evaluate impacted resources for further management and data recovery through excavation. Baseline documentation will be collected on all identified sites to include determinations of eligibility to the National Register and evaluations of resources for archeological research potential. Formal condition assessments will be conducted and will include utilizing state of the art three-dimensional and multi-sensor technologies to detect ⿿high risk⿝ areas within the broader landscape where erosion and compaction pose a threat of cultural resource loss.

    This program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences. It is hoped that projects of successful applicants will help advance digital humanistic scholarship by broadening understanding of its nature and exemplifying the robust infrastructure necessary for creating such works. ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships are intended to support an academic year dedicated to work on a major scholarly project that takes a digital form. Projects may: Address a consequential scholarly question through new research methods, new ways of representing the knowledge produced by research, or both; Create new digital research resources; Increase the scholarly utility of existing digital resources by developing new means of aggregating, navigating, searching, or analyzing those resources; Propose to analyze and reflect upon the new forms of knowledge creation and representation made possible by the digital transformation of scholarship. ACLS will award up to six Digital Innovation Fellowships in this competition year. Each fellowship carries a stipend of up to $60,000 towards an academic year's leave and provides for project costs of up to $25,000. ACLS does not support creative works (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translations, or purely pedagogical projects.

Archaeological Data Recovery and Testing at Kozlowksiâ¿¿s Trading Post - 0 views

    The purpose of the project is to conduct archaeological data recovery and testing at the Kozlowskiâ¿¿s Trading Post at Pecos NHP in support of proposed rehabilitation/construction activities. Inside the building, the locations of concrete spot footings needed to support the new floor system will be excavated by archaeologists and all cultural resources recorded, artifacts analyzed and final report completed that summarizes present and past work within the Trading Post. Exterior work consists of remote sensing and test excavations to identify buried cultural resources in the location of a new septic line and proposed leach field southeast of the Trading Post building. This work benefits the public by providing information for interpretation and allowing for the completion of archaeological compliance, preservation, and the rehabilitation of Kozlowskiâ¿¿s Trading Post, which will be used as a visitor contact station. Furthermore, student(s) working on the project will gain valuable professional experience with archeology applied within a real world, public trust resource management setting. The information, products and/or services identified or developed by this project will be shared through a variety of strategies to increase public awareness, knowledge and support for historic preservation, and stewardship of the nationâ¿¿s cultural and historical heritage.

Improve Access to Information on Cultural and Natural Resources - 0 views

    The National Park Service (NPS) creates resource management records in the course of daily business which are considered permanent. These records incorporate the long history of assembling data on and managing park cultural and natural resources during the past century. Over 40% of known agency archives are uncataloged. The need to utilize information in these inaccessible records grows daily. This project provides an archives-focused educational work experience for archeology, archives, and digital information students which will complement classroom instruction through continuing efforts to inventory and digitize archival collections to improve park and public access to archival information of the NPS. Students, in cooperation with archivists from the Intermountain Region Museum Services Program will inventory an estimated 1 million uncataloged archives housed at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center (WACC), Tucson, Arizona, to provide initial information about collection contents. An estimated 35,000 items from the Western Archeological and Conservation Centerâ¿¿s Ruins Stabilization collection and several smaller archeological and historic preservation collections will be digitized. These collections are part of on-going efforts to share information, while providing experience with applying the National Archives and Records Administration digitization protocols and best practices.

This intern will assist the parkâ¿¿s lead archeologist on an intensive project to analyze impacts to historic properties from visitor use. The intern will assist with in-field condition assessments, site documentation, data entry, and analysis of archives and cultural resource site records. The intern will compile analysis and findings to be presented to park management. The intern will assist in the creation of treatment/preservation plans, NEPA and NHPA compliance, tribal consultation, and inter-division cooperation. The intern will assist in stabilization treatment such as: drainage diversions, trail re-routing, fence construction, barriers, and backfilling.

Substance Use and Abuse, Risky Decision Making and HIV/AIDS (R03) - 0 views

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to stimulate model-driven research to understand the ways that people make decisions about engaging in behaviors that impact the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, or to adhere to treatments for HIV. Decision making processes may contribute to both substance use/abuse and other HIV acquisition or transmission risks. A better understanding of decision making processes in the context of brain neural networks and their associated functions would lead to the development of better strategies to reduce the frequency of HIV-risk behaviors. Therefore, this FOA encourages applications to study 1) cognitive, motivational or emotional mechanisms and/or 2) brain neuroendocrine and reinforcement systems that related to HIV-risk behaviors or treatment non-compliance. Interdisciplinary studies that incorporate approaches from psychology, economics, anthropology, sociology, decision sciences, neuroscience and computational modeling are encouraged. This FOA for R03 applications encourages small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. The R03 activity code supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. In no cases, should research involving animals be proposed.

    The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest philanthropy dedicated solely to health, has issued a call for proposals for research on the ways that for-profit anchors advance health and well-being in the communities where they are located. Funded studies are expected to include rigorous empirical research that can inform the business case for why and how more companies serve as anchor institutions in their immediate surrounding geographies. Studies should also inform future RWJF strategies to motivate companies to act in a way that promotes health and well-being. Potential research questions might include: What factors facilitate or hinder anchor businesses from addressing health equity or social determinants of health? What are the motivations and incentives of anchor businesses across a range of sectors? What kind of equity-promoting narrative and framing resonates with the leaders of corporate anchor institutions? Notice of Intent: Backcountry Preservation Plan, Casa Grande Ruins National Monument - 0 views

    This cooperative project in Casa Grande Ruins National Monument has two primary objectives. First, to develop a baseline Preservation Plan for 60 archaeological sites including 59 backcountry sites and the standing architecture of Compound A, a front-country site that addresses deferred maintenance of delicate adobe surfaces dating to A.D.1350. Second, to develop and implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Treatment Recommendations for the 59 backcountry sites identified through recent condition assessments. The University of Arizona (UA) team will work with CAGR preservation staff to maintain the backfill levels at five identified archeological sites; backfilling preservation treatments will be focused at four (the Ballcourt, B, C, and G) of the 59 backcountry Maintained Archeological Sites and Compound A. Additional preservation treatments will address IPM needs and the development of rills and gullies as a result of water flowing over surfaces as identified at 54 backcountry archeological sites. Pest impacts and surface erosion are the biggest threats to backcountry cultural resources at Casa Grande Ruins.

Pre-College Education | United States-Japan Foundation - 0 views

    Since 1980, the United States-Japan Foundation has supported projects that have involved more than five thousand pre-college teachers in the U.S. and Japan in mutual study and learning on topics related to the U.S.-Japan relationship, including in-depth study of the culture, society, and history of both countries. Through these teachers, as well as through a variety of curriculum materials, Web-based collaborative activities, and partnerships between U.S. and Japanese schools, tens of thousands of young people in both countries have begun to study and understand their mutual connections and the importance of the friendship and partnership that binds the two nations so closely. Through its Pre-College Education Program, USJF supports activities that take advantage of new technology to bring Japanese and American teachers and students together; build human networks among teachers on both sides of the Pacific with a mutual interest in teaching and learning about Japan, the U.S., and U.S.-Japan relations, particularly in the fields of social studies and Japanese-language instruction; and/or invest in regions that have been underserved in terms of exposure to and resources for learning about the other country. The foundation also supports programs that enlist experts at institutions of higher learning and other NGOs in support of U.S.-Japan studies programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in both countries; present the products of research and policy studies and media programs on U.S.-Japan issues to an audience of pre-college students and their teachers; and enhance, expand, and preserve the study of the Japanese language at the pre-college level in the United States through teacher professional development opportunities, national standards, and performance assessments.
