This Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to stimulate research on and development of (R&D) wearable, mobile-based, or other technology (software applications, etc.) to collect continuous data on variables assessing functions of daily activities in individuals at risk for or with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or AD-related dementias (ADRD).

The Tufts Health Plan Foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry from nonprofit organizations for projects that champion communities as they improve the quality of life for all citizens across the lifespan. The foundation will consider policy/advocacy projects in the areas of built environment, transportation, housing, social and civic participation and inclusion, employment, communication and information, and community support and health services. Projects should be collaborative and involve participants from all community arenas, with a focus on policy and advocacy activities that move communities toward age-friendly status.

This FOA invites applications that propose to support advanced-stage development and utilization of novel research infrastructure to advance the science of aging in specific areas requiring interdisciplinary partnerships or collaborations. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental Grants Phase II mechanism to provide support for expanded activities. Applicants are expected to have an existing research infrastructure developed either through PA-12-064, or with other NIH or non-NIH support. Through this award, investigators will develop a mature and sustainable research infrastructure to support projects that address key interdisciplinary aging research questions.

This RFA invites applications for planning awards to develop and finalize protocols for well-powered cognitive training intervention trials to remediate or prevent age-related cognitive decline as well as possibly prevent or delay the onset of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Planning activities may include the collection of pilot data and the refinement of cognitive training protocols consistent with Stage I of the NIH Stage Model. Trial designs must justify the means used to assess cognition and to explore the underlying mechanisms of change. Such methods as structural and functional neuroimaging with biomarkers justified by an underlying model of change, CSF fluids, and blood biomarkers are appropriate candidate tools.

As a capacity-building strategy, ILA proposes that the Native American Independent Living Demonstration Project will support Native American Independent Living (IL) Specialists who have similar responsibilities to the non- Native American IL Specialist counterpart in the center for independent living, but with a focus in Indian Country. The Project will provide the independent living core services including: information and referral; skills training; peer counseling; individual and systems advocacy; and services that facilitate transition from nursing homes and other institutions to the community, assistance to individuals at risk of entering institutions and transition of youth to post secondary life. In addition, the Native American IL Specialist will conduct activities such as: • Serve as an information and resource specialist about disabilities to the Tribes in their Area• Gather information about IL needs in Indian Country• Gather data and information about disabilities in Indian Country• Gather information about current tribal efforts at providing assistance to tribal members with disabilities• Serve as a liaison between State IL Programs, the Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs) and Indian Country• Establish inter-agency coalitions in Indian Country to focus on serving the unmet needs of tribal members with disabilities• Serve as an effective advocate and liaison between ACL programs and services and Indian Country.

The Native American Elder Justice Initiative (NAEJI) will address the need for more culturally appropriate information and community education materials on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation in Indian Country. It is expected that activities carried out under NAEJI will address at least one (1) of the following needs: a) Identify, develop and disseminate information and strategies on effective collaborations between tribal and non-tribal entities to address suspected cases of abuse, neglect, or exploitation; b) Assist Tribes in the development of tribal codes that protect seniors, building on existing work to develop model codes and an implementation toolkit, and maintaining examples of tribal codes to share with those creating or updating their own codes; c) Identify and develop tribally produced elder abuse prevention resources, and other informational materials for professionals and tribal members on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation that are culturally appropriate to Tribal perceptions of abuse and Tribal values;

HABRI has issued a Request for Proposals for projects that investigate the health outcomes of pet ownership and/or animal-assisted activity or therapy, both for the people and the animals involved. The organization is interested in projects that involve a variety of companion animals (e.g., small animals, dogs, cats, fish, and horses). Proposals should have a strong theoretical framework and focus on innovative approaches to studying the health effects of companion animals on humans within the following broad categories: child health and development; healthy aging; and mental health and wellness.

The Brookdale Foundation Group works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and to improve the lives of senior citizens. The Brookdale National Group Respite Program awards seed grants to service providers that plan to offer new, dementia-specific Group Respite or specialized Early Memory Loss (EML) programming to participants, along with support to caregivers, in order to help individuals remain in their communities. All funded programs must provide a day program for people affected by Alzheimer's disease or other dementia, which is limited to those who are cognitively impaired. Grants of $10,000 will be provided in year one, renewable for $5,000 for the second year, based on evaluation of first year's activities and potential for future continuity of the program. In addition to providing respite care and enjoyable group activities that build on the strengths and abilities of participants, the programs offer family caregivers access to services such as counseling, support groups, information and referral, training, and education. With a nationwide network of programs providing regular respite services, the program demonstrates that a cost-effective social model of adult day services can successfully address the special needs of Alzheimer's families. To that end, grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to up to fifteen Group Respite and Early Memory Loss programs to develop a new dementia-specific social model program. Grant funds may not be used to support or expand the hours, days, or service capacity of existing social, health, or medical model programs or to serve mixed populations. Applications must be received no later than June 27.

Activities supported under this FOA include, but are not limited to the in vitro screening of existing ligands against human ADRD brain tissue, medicinal chemistry support for development of new compounds and improvement of existing ligand specificity and selectivity, initial screening of ligands in appropriate animal models, and radioligand formulation and first-in-human testing. The Center without Walls should encompass research that will move promising ligands through in vitro and in vivo optimization to first-in-human studies. Applications must include an administrative core, a medicinal chemistry core, a clinical core, a scientific governance structure, and a minimum of two research projects with milestone plans that address workflows for screening of existing and newly derived ligands against human ADRD tissue and appropriate animal models. Synergy must be evident among Center research projects and cores, such that successful completion of the aims could not be accomplished without the Center structure.

The English Speaking Union of the United States each year sponsors a travel grant for study or research providing a stipend of up to $2,000. This competition is open to qualified under-graduate and post-graduate students, faculty, and others involved in academic pursuits that are in accord with the goal of the English Speaking Union of promoting education and understanding among the English speaking peoples of the world. The grant is designed to assist worthy individuals who are active in the fields of Business, the Humanities, Science and Engineering, Liberal, Fine or Applied Arts and who wish to study or conduct research either in the United States or in one of the countries of the British Commonwealth.

Cooperative agreements under this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), Alzheimer's Disease Program Initiative (ADPI), are dedicated to the development and expansion of dementia-capable home and community-based service (HCBS) systems in States and Communities. There are two application options contained in this FOA, one for States (Option A) and the other for Communities (Option B). No entity would be eligible to apply for both State and Community options. The systems resulting from program activities under both program options will provide quality, person-centered services that help individuals remain independent and safe in their communities.

The Administration on Aging ACL intends to award one cooperative agreement designed to better understand and address the needs of the aging network through a comprehensive system of documenting and reporting on Area Agencies on Aging and Tribal Organization activities and expertise in health and the delivery of community-based services and supports.

This FOA invites applications from qualified institutions to create a Roybal Center Coordinating Center (CC), serving the needs of the Roybal Centers for Translational Research on Aging program as well as the Roybal Centers for Translational Research on Dementia Care Provider Support program. The Roybal Coordinating Center will serve as a hub for the Roybal Center grant program. Roybal Center programs conduct translational research in the behavioral and social sciences of aging, structured in accordance with the NIH Stage Model. Roybal Center program resources are intended for pilot and preliminary translational, multi-directional research at Stages 0 through IV of the behavioral intervention development pipeline with the goal of creating principle-driven interventions that improve the lives of mid-life and older people and the capacity of institutions to adapt to societal aging. The Roybal Coordinating Center will facilitate and coordinate trans-Roybal activities. The Center will work closely with the NIA Program Officer and, in coordination with all Roybal sites, will be responsive to requests generated by key Roybal site personnel, NIA, NIH, the scientific community, and the general public.

Recent studies show nearly half of older adults will experience social isolation, which is linked to a broad range of negative physical and psychological outcomes that can be life threatening. Due to geographic isolation, limited access to reliable transportation, and reduced family/social networks as young people move to urban areas for employment, the problem disproportionally impacts older adults in rural areas. By providing older adults with stimulating, meaningful, and enjoyable activities, technology can enhance their sense of connection to family, friends and community, add to their overall quality of life, and help them live independently in their communities of choice. However, technology on its own cannot eliminate social isolation completely and must be combined with increased community engagement, human connectivity, and opportunities for rural residents of all ages to work together to promote healthy aging.
