"The budget request for Oak Ridge National laboratory is about $1.65 billion, based on what I'm told by lab officials and seeing in budget info released by the administration. The actual budget request for ORNL is about $1.18 billion, but once you add the work for other agencies, such as NOAA and DOD, etc., the total budget is expected to be about $1.65 billion. Energy and nonproliferation are key areas. I'm still working to get information on Y-12. I'm told there is a full allotment in place for the Uranium Processing Facility, perhaps in the range of $130 million, but I haven't found any documents that say that -- at least not yet. NNSA chief Tom D'Agostino is supposed to have a media briefing at 4 p.m."

"Protestors from around the world and around the corner converged on Exelon Nuclear's Limerick Generating Station Tuesday morning to protest the world's continued pursuit of nuclear power. Part of a group called Footprints for Peace, about 21 people, some of them Buddhist monks and nuns, carried flags, donned gas masks, chanted mantras and banged drums outside the plant's main entrance at Sanatoga and Evergreen roads. Plant security were present, as were the Limerick Police, but there were no incidents and the protest ended as peacefully as it began after a little more than an hour. The protestors - who starting walking two months ago from the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn. - arrived in Montgomery County via the Schuylkill River Trail and stayed overnight at St. James United Church of Christ on High Street."

The West Valley Citizen Task Force called for a full cleanup of radioactive waste at the West Valley Demonstration Project and the former Western New York nuclear fuel reprocessing center. But at the same time, the group urged authorities to pursue additional environmental impact studies and continue public involvement if a phased decision-making approach is chosen instead. The task force, made up of representatives from the surrounding community, has been meeting since 1997 to advise the federal and state governments on a preferred cleanup method of the 3,300-acre site. The task force sent the 12-page letter and attachments to the Department of Energy, which announced a three-month extension of the decision deadline, through Sept. 8.

Nearly 370 farms in Britain are still restricted in the way they use land and rear sheep because of radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power station accident 23 years ago, the government has admitted. Environmentalists have seized on the figures as proof of the enormous dangers posed by nuclear power as the UK moves towards building a new generation of plants around the country. Dawn Primarolo, minister for health, revealed 369 farms and 190,000 sheep were affected, but pointed out this was a tiny number compared with the immediate impact of radioactive fallout from Ukraine.
