A company that wants to build a nuclear plant in Idaho using Areva's Evolutionary Power Reactor design hit a minor roadblock in that goal last week. The Planning and Zoning Commission of Elmore County, Idaho, voted against rezoning 1,400 acres of farmland to heavy industrial so Alternate Energy Holdings Inc. could build the plant.

The South Texas Project nuclear power plant in Matagorda County, which is located about 8 miles southwest of Wadsworth, wants to double its size to four reactors. Every 18 months, a third of the bundles are removed and replaced as part of the refueling process.

Several hundred nuclear activists came to Montpelier yesterday to voice their concerns about the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Vermont Yankee wants permission to operate for another 20 years, after its license expires in 2012. State law gives the legislature the power to approve the license extension.
