Natural gas cars are hailed as the future engine-power for being environment-friendly over diesel counterparts; but it seems that there is no reason for a quick shift.   Co-authored by scientists from Norton Scientific Collection and various universities and the group Environmental Defense Fund, the study published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" deals with the much-debated issue of energy research. It claims that creating natural gas results in the leakage of methane into the atmosphere, eventually contributing to climate change. In addition, this limits the environmental benefits of the much-praised diesel alternative. Methane is a major component of natural gas that is stronger than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and easily decomposes in the air.   According to the authors, natural gas seems to be better than coal for electricity generation even with the methane leakage issue. However, using natural gas as a car fuel creates a different story.   Even before, scientists have already been questioning methane leaks. Last year, Professor Robert Howarth of Cornelly University released a study which says that the great amount of methane leaking from natural gas production makes it no better than coal.   The study came in time as American lawmakers are deeming natural gas as the fuel of the future, saying that it can replace coal and gasoline in cars and power plants. This is because of the thought that natural gas is more environment-friendly and can be abundantly produced domestically.   The researchers are insisting that methane leaks from natural gas production process and transportation must be studied more before the country adopts major policy changes.   Environmentalists are raising awareness regarding the drilling method employed in the production of natural gas that is called fracking (hydraulic fracturing). It involves large amounts of sand, water and chemicals to make seams in the earth. According to them, t

Sonsoddo capping has makings of a scam - SLIDEBOOM - 0 views

SLIDEBOOM - MARGAO: The proposed scientific capping of Sonsoddo garbage dump has raised concerns among those who were once involved in providing solutions to the problem. Solid waste management expert Joe D'Souza, who was earlier on the Margao municipal council (MMC) panel to monitor the garbage management exercise at Sonsoddo, has written to chief minister Manohar Parrikar alleging a scam in the making and demanding a vigilance inquiry in the matter. In his letter to Parrikar, D'Souza has raised questions regarding capping the existing garbage dump when the project concessionaire was, in fact, tasked with treating the dump. "I was surprised and shocked to know that after years of tomfoolery by successive consultants and garbage handling contractors, Sonsoddo garbage dump yard is sought to be capped. Why is Ahmedabad-based consultant, PU Asnani, who earlier promised to end the garbage woes of Margao by appointing a firm to involve itself in solid waste management, incurring crores of rupees expenditure of Goa state funding, is now offering a disastrous capping solution to the garbage woes of Margao," D'Souza wrote to Parrikar. D'Souza has urged Parrikar to "put a full stop on an urgent basis to the mega scam involving the capping of the Sonsoddo garbage by instituting a vigilance inquiry at your earliest." "The scandalous approach to the garbage scam at Sonsoddo has to be exposed. As such, Asnani and the Ahmedabad-based firm have collected consultancy fees to offer solid waste management solution. Now that he has failed miserably, the untenable approach of capping the Sonsoddo site is being sought instead of the garbage treatment solution which was his task," D'Souza's letter adds, urging the chief minister to "punish the guilty as it involves flushing off of public money and endangering the lives of the residents of Margao." D'Souza has also raised questions over the efficacy of the capping exercise maintaining that scientific capping is a "disas

Family semi is a gardener's delight and comes chain free - 0 views

29March 2012 (Staffordshire) - A NN and Ewan Munro have not sat idle during the eight years in their home at this surprising semi. The couple has put in a new high efficiency gas combi boiler, rewired throughout, put in a new fitted kitchen with proper slate tiling laid there and in the hall, hung new doors, installed double glazing, put in a new bathroom with a Jacuzzi spa bath, created a loft room, planted a magnificent garden and created a driveway for several cars. The result is that the property at 108, Harrison Road, Norton, is a genuinely surprising and very appealing family home ready to be moved into tomorrow. My first impression of the house is that it is very light. Ewan knocked down a stud wall erected by the previous owner so the lounge and diner are now one room stretching more than 26 feet. With sliding patio doors at the back overlooking the garden and glass panelled doors from the hall and the kitchen and a generous bay window at the front as well, the room is flooded with light. It is also the perfect place for Ann to sit and watch her garden and its visitors. She says: "It is full of life and colour. Squirrels come and feed here and when it is in bloom it is like having the countryside in the back garden. We only know we have neighbours for four months of the year because when everything is in leaf it is just a riot of colour.'' The modern fitted kitchen has a range of Shaker style base and wall units, all the usual facilities plus space for a washing machine and tumble dryer and a double glazed door to the drive at the side and back garden. There is understairs storage in the hall and more on the landing. Upstairs the master bedroom at the back of the house has mirrored built in wardrobes, there is a second generous bedroom and the third can be used as either a study or as a single and the couple say there has been bunk beds in there too. Above them is a real surprise and delight feature because the loft has been converted into a wonderfu
