Doing Science: The Process of Scientific Inquiry - 5 views

  •
Good read about implementing scientific inquiry. I really liked many of the tables/charts they included. I plan to post the table on pg. 27 in the classroom (Fundamental Abilities Necessary to Do Scientific Inquiry).

This EPIC Bottle Rocket- Newton's Third Law - 2 views

  •
Use a two liter, three pencils, vinegar, baking soda, a paper towel, and a cork to build this rocket.  Pretty simple!  This experiment easily goes along with Newton's Laws, scientific inquiry, or chemical reactions.

That looks like a great visual for the kids. I like it!

This could be a pretty slick little inquiry lab that students could tend to (collect data from) for a few minutes of time each day over the course of a unit...

Newsela | Thousands of sea stars succumb to disease on the West Coast - 4 views

  • How do we stop it? “Is it the type of thing that will heal itself over time? That’s the real question,” Raimondi said.

What possible actions could scientists take to attack a problem like this?
    • Sean Nash

Absolutely. The best thing about this article (and those like it from this resource) are that they support an attention to inquiry by always leaving the reader with more high level questions at the end...
  • The science so far seems to show that starfish species are affected differently depending on their physical location. For species in tide pool areas, the sores show up first and are followed by tissue decay, Raimondi said. Death might follow in a matter of weeks, or even not at all. But in underwater sea star species the sickness is much quicker and more deadly. When starfishes under the surface get the disease, tissue decay happens in hours or a day rather than weeks.
  • He also said that the term “wasting” describes the symptoms. These symptoms are actually seen all the time, he said, and are put down to stress, such as a starfish drying out or getting sick.

As you read this article, keep in mind what effects a change in population of sea star would have an it's environment.
