10 Video Websites That Are Like YouTube for Kids - 0 views

"The Internet is wonderful for entertainment and interesting content. However, for kids, that entertaining content isn't always appropriate. It's difficult for parents to allow their kids to use YouTube, because it's very hard to filter out the bad content from the good. Luckily, many of the children's sites across the Internet publish their own version of YouTube, dedicated exclusively for kids and no one else. "

Martin said... Fantastic project Greg and thanks for sharing. Our grade 6 and 7 students in West Vancouver are just now completing a year-long magazine publishing project. Each student selected a topic of interest and throughout the year they have been taught various writing and publishing techniques. We have partnered with a local university graphic design department and their first year design students have been assisting our students with their layout and design, to produce dramatic publications. Our students have been so motivated the entire year. Giving the students choice and a bit of freedom to experiment and collaborate has been enlightening. We really have noticed a significant level of engagement and ownership with all students, including some boys who are not that keen to write. Our completed magazines will be posted on our ISSUU site http://issuu.com/mandrews. Several samples have been posted.
Teaching with Technology in the Middle: Diigo for Digital Writing Reflection - 0 views

"Assessment of how students meet these goals is done by the students themselves, as for each piece they publish they write a reflection where they identify and explain aspects of their piece that show the following: -evidence of themselves as thinkers -evidence of using revision to improve their writing -evidence of how they worked through challenges I love using this method as a way to assess my students' writing, which I was introduced to last summer at the UNC Charlotte Writing Project. It focuses students attention on their own process, encourages them to try new ideas and approaches, respects their diversity, and guides students in being better able to talk about their own thinking and learning. Up until today, I've been having my students complete this reflective/metacognitive assignment by responding to these directions on their own sheet of paper, which they then would turn in to me. But this morning while I was preparing my class for the day, it occurred to me that Diigo's web highlighter and sticky note tools would allow students to carry out that same assignment without paper. In addition, it would also take students less time to complete, let others read the reflections they wrote, and make it easier for me to access and assess their work. "

Hot Web Apps for HOTS 23 Jan Apps and web apps are only as purposeful as the products and projects that they are used to create. After spending copious amounts of time publishing "Hot Apps 4 HOTS" to iBooks, I felt I should allocate some time to focus on web apps and how they too can be used to support higher order thinking skills.
