UK may block repeated offenders who illegally download and share copyright films and music could find their internet access being restricted or even cut off. This has split opinions with the British Phonographic Industry supporting the decision and groups such as the Open Rights Group opposing the decision.
I believe such a move is too drastic and it may not be effective in cutting down the amount of piracy going on. The focus is now on the repeated offenders. However what will be the yardstick for being labeled as repeated offenders and hence getting the internet access cut off? The article mentioned that it is the ISP's decision on whether to catch and take action against offenders. Again the question is should the ISP release information about the illegal offender? Should the privacy of the internet use be of utmost importance to the ISP? Should the confidentiality level of information that the ISP has over the internet user be at the level of medical confidentiality of the patients and hospital/doctors?
