As the number of missing grows in Chile, president Michelle Bachelet, put military forces in charge of controlling looting in the city of Concepcion, the largest city near the epicenter of the quake, which included throwing tear gas at crowds and arresting dozens. This seems unwarranted as most Chileans are looting supermarkets and gas stations, necessary items after a disaster. The actual relief workers, however, are finding it difficult to get through all the debris left by collapsed apartment buildings, aftershocks further complicating their work. Chileans on the coast have a lot to deal with as port cities were destroyed and a tsunami killed people on some of the islands. And although this earthquake was strong, it was much deeper than most, therefore resulting in less causalities and a decreased threat of tsunami waves.
