Central American society is ridden with the undertones of machismo, or male-domination, in the media, home, and working environment. Women's issues are narrowed to express the vies of the ingraned patriarchal structure that the culture has known for so long. The press only focuses on women, and children for that matter, when they "acquire commercial value or elicit salacious interest." Compared with space devoted to politics, gutter crime and "high-society" gossip, women and children -- especially the poor -- are far outdistanced, if not disappointingly last. One of the reasons for this is because their social status has continued to be at bottom, and it may be in the hands of legislative change to ignite cultural change.

The media has played a role in the gendering of young girls, by "reinforcing religious sex stereotypes, and by glorifying motherhood and subservient wifehood." Options such as family planning are noot communicated to women, so they rarely are aware that alternative life paths exist (away from hard labor and motherhood.) Young girls are often more malnourished, underfed, and "un-loved" in Central American society.
