MOOCs (massive open online courses) and other forms of online learning have the potential to disrupt traditional classroom education-or to help us better understand how to exploit the many learning spaces students now inhabit.
However, the value of MOOCs as a powerful force to protect the fundamental purpose of academic freedom has been lost in the current distraction of debating the relative value of online as opposed to traditional classroom teaching.
