Grammar Girl :: Quick and Dirty Tips ™ - 1 views

  •
Grammar Girl is a website and podcast with a daily grammar rule or tip. When we listened to Bek's podcast, I was reminded of Grammar Girl. It has a similar quick and fun feel. The podcasts are likely most appropriate for advanced learners. It's useful for teachers, too, as I frequently learn something new through the show.

Free Rice - 1 views

Free Rice is an online educational game. It can be used for many different subjects, including vocabulary and grammar. It's a fun way for students to practice their skills. To add a motivational twist, Free Rice donates a certain amount of rice for each correct answer. Because the vocabulary words and grammar structures are selected at random by the program, it wouldn't be a very effective learning tool. However, If the students worked in groups, they could learn new vocabulary together as they played, but I don't think this format would be possible with grammar. I think it would serve most useful as a fun way for more advanced students to review material.

5 Minute English - ESL Lessons - 0 views

  •
When I opened a lesson on grammar, it had a lesson with a Q & A section below it where students can check their own answers. A daily vocab word is also on the page. Lessons include grammar, reading, vocab, listening, pronunciation, slang/idioms. From the Website: "Learning English as a second language (ESL) is not always easy, but it should be fun. 5 Minute English has been designed to give you short and easy explanations and exercises. You can also find answers to questions that other students have had about confusing things in English. This is under the Question and Answer section. Take your time and come back to 5 Minute English often. You'll be surprised at how much English you can learn with a little dedication."

English-Guide.org - 1 views

English-Guide.org is an incredible website, albeit it looks like it is designed for children. That said, if you're teaching children English learners, great; you're all set to go. If you're teaching adults, this site could be used as a respite from the intensity of intensive English programs. While many of the resources on the site are language learning games that take the form of drill-and-kill exercises, not all of the material is so rudimentary. For instance, the Career/Business section under Listening links to many listening passages at elllo.org (another useful site for listening and speaking teachers). On elllo, learners can listen to business passages, such as one on personality traits and answer comprehension questions. It would be tempting to let a class full of learners loose on this site to see what resources they would gravitate toward. The major categories of resources Vocabulary, Listening, Grammar, and Others, and within these categories, like I mentioned, there are both games and more sophisticated exercises at the learners' fingertips.

ESL Games World - 0 views

This website has many games for grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, as well as games that teachers can use to get all classmates involved at once (e.g., Jeopardy). The games are meant to be supplementary. Some disadvantages to the website are that the pronunciation exercises require that students be familiar with the IPA, that the exercises are largely drills, and that there are many ads on the website that could be distracting. However, if students need additional practice with a specific grammatical, vocabulary, or pronunciation item, then this website could be useful.

BarryFunEnglish | Fun ESL Classroom Games, Custom Worksheets, Printable Flashcards, and... - 1 views

BarryFunEnglish is a site aimed at ESL/EFL for younger learners. It has a good number of boardgame style games that can be quickly set up and customized- this is the chief advantage for using the site over a traditional version of Monopoly or Battleship. Coupled with a large display (i.e. projector, large TV), classes of up to ~12 students can be included in playing the game without too much downtime for any one student or team. You can set up custom vocab lists, but it's limited to the vocab items in the site's database, so you're mostly limited to beginner level English. Having used this at my past job teaching young EFL learners, I will say that it can be tempting to use it as a crutch- don't just play a game for the sake of playing a game, or killing time. I'd also recommend varying the games you use and definitely make use of the customizable vocab lists. Still, a huge part of being a child is playing games with other children, and linguistically, that means game playing can help develop a lot of the meta-language that children use for games.

A language learning website that has various languages, and different native language ESLs (e.g. Korean ESL or French ESL). Because it doesn't have Mandarin ESL, I tried Cantonese ESL. It worked very well. It integrated listening, speaking, and grammar in a beginner level class, and used dialogues to introduce the key content for a particular class. It is worth to try.

English Homework Help - 1 views

"These video chapters and web resources will assist students with their written and verbal communication skills. Content areas included are grammar, composition, and mechanics from Kindergarten to Grade 12." This site can also help supplement classroom material for students still in the k-12 grades who need to get better at their English language proficiency. This could especially be helpful for students who enter the American school system who speak a different L1 at home.

EngVid is a collection of short English lessons posted as videos. Learners watch the videos on particular topics instructing them how to use the English language correctly. Each video is marked for certain proficiency levels. Additionally, the site features about seven consistent teachers. For learners who enjoy the style of a particular teacher, the learner can explore other lessons taught by that teacher. Because the English lesson is in a video form, learners can move the cursor back and forth to have content repeated. And because the topic of the video is at the learner's discretion, the learner may feel like he/she is getting individualized instruction that is not always available in larger classroom settings. The most beneficial aspect of the site are the quizzes that learners can take after viewing each lesson. These lessons ask students to apply the information presented in the videos. That is, instead of being comprehension questions about the lecture, the learners must use the particular language features being discussed.

ESL Party Land Teachers - 0 views

This site has ideas, printable materials, discussion forums, and employment opportunities. It shows how to teach Film and Video, teach with the Internet, and using songs and music. You can sign up for free and download a limited amount of worksheets per month from www.education.com/worksheets. You can select by Grade or Subject. These are mostly useful for homeschoolers or in regular children's classrooms. It offers content-based ideas with integrated skills including conversation, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and Vocabulary. The Grammar is practiced in communicative settings. ESL PartyLand is a nice home base for Internet tools including up-to-date addresses for Dave's ESL Café, EF Englishtown, Kent's ESL Wonderland, On-line TOEFL Materials, and Randall's CyberListening Lab. It funnels all these sites into one page for easy reference. Other sites it observes as interesting include The All Music Guide, The Discovery Channel on-line, Earth Alert, and Lonely Planet On-line.

Using Photos - 0 views

It looks like the site busyteacher has lots of resources and links for...busy teachers. There are articles, worksheets, and links to seasonal activities. I'm posting this particular list of photo activities because (a) I think a lot of our students take pictures anyway and we could include them in the photo-gathering aspect of these projects, and (b) I think a lot of these activities can be adapted and incorporated into digital stories or grockit videos (or other CALL activities). Photo activities can provide context for teaching grammar or situational uses of language.

This is my favorite online dictionary for L2 purposes. It contains several translation dictionaries between English and Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and several other languages. It also has conjugation charts (when you look up words), translations for phrases, and forums. The website also has plenty of examples. I have used this website for years when working in Spanish, and I have found the forums particularly useful when trying to translate something tricky. Also, when searching for a multi-word phrase, I recommend using quotation marks.
