This site offers on-line instruction for ESL students moving into academic writing. Most of the information is free, but you can also take an on-line class and get feedback from the teacher/website owner. There are quizzes and examples for self-instruction. From the site: "This web site is for non-native speakers of English who want to write in English for academic purposes. The material in this site is aimed toward high intermediate or advanced English learners who have never taken a formal English writing course and whose TOEFL score is about 500 or more. The main objective of this site is to help non-native English speakers write for an English speaking academic audience which necessarily includes organization of ideas, the single greatest weakness among many non-native English speakers."

"Learn English with our free tools for ESL students, including English language references, activities including tests and polls, and articles on English usage. Our ESL forum is the perfect place get help learning English, where people are online to answer your questions 24 hours a day." This site can be very useful for students who need to practice English for Specific Purposes because it has like a Business English section and common idioms section. I don't feel that this site would replace a classroom very well but could easily be used as supplementary to a classroom and a place where students can ask questions if they don't want to bother their teachers.

"Learn English online and prepare for IELTS with Languagelab. Practise with a qualified English speaking teacher, students from more than 70 countries, and learn English online." This is the selling pitch for Languagelab.com. It is a good resource for learners who aren't able to get to a classroom or have very limited availability because they have classes 24 hours. The courses are all online, but they do cost money, although not as much as a university class would cost.

This website is an interactive guide to the sounds of American English, German, and Spanish. It's American English guide is comprehensive, including a step by step guide on how to produce each sound. In addition, flash animation is used to demonstrate how to position one's mouth in order to produce the sounds of American English. This tool is useful for students who are curious about pronunciation or who are struggling with a particular sound that they would like to improve. Although the technical terms are defined, this tool can still be confusing for students and should not be taken as a guaranteed solution for improving pronunciation. It can, however, be used as supplementary material.

When you click the American English option, you can select consonants' manner, place, voice, or the vowels' monopthongs and diphthongs. Then, you can see an animation of the sound, or you can see a person using the sound in a word. The home page says it has libraries of the phonetic sounds of English, German, and Spanish.

My English Lab by Pearson is a supplemental site to the North Star Listening and Speaking and Reading and Writing textbooks. With an access code provided in textbooks, students can access a class website. Similar to BlackBoard Learn, My English Lab provides students with a calendar for assignments and enables teachers to upload content. More than that, My English Lab has many related and supplemental resources pertaining to each unit in the corresponding textbooks. For example, when covering unit one in NorthStar 3 about Advertising on the Air, My English Lab gives students access to all of the recordings from the unit that a teacher might use in class. It also gives students flash card decks with the vocabulary for the unit and sometimes has extra exercises for the students to complete. Depending on the exercises, My English Lab will score these exercises to give students grades. The disadvantages of the site primarily relate to logistics. When students by used copies of their textbooks, the books might be missing the access code. Also, students must have access to computers to make use of the site outside of class time.

When I opened a lesson on grammar, it had a lesson with a Q & A section below it where students can check their own answers. A daily vocab word is also on the page. Lessons include grammar, reading, vocab, listening, pronunciation, slang/idioms. From the Website: "Learning English as a second language (ESL) is not always easy, but it should be fun. 5 Minute English has been designed to give you short and easy explanations and exercises. You can also find answers to questions that other students have had about confusing things in English. This is under the Question and Answer section. Take your time and come back to 5 Minute English often. You'll be surprised at how much English you can learn with a little dedication."

English-Guide.org is an incredible website, albeit it looks like it is designed for children. That said, if you're teaching children English learners, great; you're all set to go. If you're teaching adults, this site could be used as a respite from the intensity of intensive English programs. While many of the resources on the site are language learning games that take the form of drill-and-kill exercises, not all of the material is so rudimentary. For instance, the Career/Business section under Listening links to many listening passages at elllo.org (another useful site for listening and speaking teachers). On elllo, learners can listen to business passages, such as one on personality traits and answer comprehension questions. It would be tempting to let a class full of learners loose on this site to see what resources they would gravitate toward. The major categories of resources Vocabulary, Listening, Grammar, and Others, and within these categories, like I mentioned, there are both games and more sophisticated exercises at the learners' fingertips.

English Daily is an interesting site for English learners because of its vast array of resources. For learners who have an interest in learning about English idioms, learners can discover the definitions of idioms and read examples of them in context. To learn about English language culture or for practicing reading fluency aloud, the Movie Lines section of the site contains portions of dialogue from popular movies. To practice comprehension questions, the comprehension section allows learners to read a passage and to answer questions about it. While the website has many advantages and may appeal to younger learners and business professionals alike, the presentation of the content is not very aesthetically pleasing, and the site is full of advertisements that may distract learners from the content they are attempting to learn. Additionally, the site is not very interactive beyond the news section that allows learner to listen to a news story and to complete cloze exercises. Furthermore, the answers to exercises are presented on the same page as the exercises themselves, so clearly a learner would need to be rather autonomous to use the site effectively. To fully incorporate the site into a classroom, a teacher would benefit from creating supplemental materials such as a learning log in order to track student learning.

VOA Special English has high-interest stories for language learners that are spoken at a slightly (sometimes more) reduced rate with clear enunciation. I've enjoyed pulling stories off of here for multi-level classes of ESL adults who want to learn more about America. A word of caution, not all stories are totally g-rated (a current story on Rihanna is not something I would use with PIE students). One advantage of VOA is that many stories have full or partial transcripts available as a resource. Many stories also have built in language activities that students can do on their own during class or as homework. While I sometimes find the reduced pace of VOA special English falling short of authentic, overall, I think this is a useful resource for teachers.

The VOA special English was widely used by Chinese English learners years ago. VOA does not only has a slow pace but also uses only "high-frequency" words. Maybe less authentic, but a good resource to start with.

This is a corpus of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). The texts come from spoken interactions between nonnative speakers of English in ELF contexts (i.e., when speakers from different L1 backgrounds must use English in order to communicate).

Similarly to the Breaking News English website, the Famous People English website features simplified mini-biographies on famous people from all over the world. Each passage also comes with a variety of activities. I have used this site many times for finding level-appropriate reading passages.

StumbleUpon is a website that was not created with language learners in mind, but it can be a useful tool in the language classroom. You can sign up for free, and then you pick interests, such as English, humor, cats, politics, etc. When you hit "Stumble," you get new pages generated based on your interests. There are articles, videos, memes, blogs, pages dedicated to motivating writers, and so on, and most of the content is in English. Though not everything is authentic, there are pages on here that would be useful for reading, listening, and writing especially. The website is fun to use and based on students interests, which should increase student motivation. One activity that can be done with it is to ask students to share with the class (in person or perhaps on a discussion board) one or more websites that they stumbled upon. It would get students to use English to describe what they came across. One downfall for the classroom, though, is that you never know what you will get, so the content may not always be useful or level appropriate. Content is sometimes also more appropriate for teenage or older users.

"These video chapters and web resources will assist students with their written and verbal communication skills. Content areas included are grammar, composition, and mechanics from Kindergarten to Grade 12." This site can also help supplement classroom material for students still in the k-12 grades who need to get better at their English language proficiency. This could especially be helpful for students who enter the American school system who speak a different L1 at home.

"Learn real English language from English speakers around the world on elllo with free listening, reading, and vocabulary activities and downloads." Elllo is a library of over 1200 ESL listening passages. One really nice feature of the site is representation of many varieties of World Englishes (Inner, Outer, and Expanding Circle speakers are featured). The site is fairly low-frills, but I find that to be a good thing- it's very easy to go directly to what you want and use a listening passage for your own purposes. When I taught Listening and Speaking, I found ello.org to be a really good source for listening passages about all kinds of subjects.

EngVid is a collection of short English lessons posted as videos. Learners watch the videos on particular topics instructing them how to use the English language correctly. Each video is marked for certain proficiency levels. Additionally, the site features about seven consistent teachers. For learners who enjoy the style of a particular teacher, the learner can explore other lessons taught by that teacher. Because the English lesson is in a video form, learners can move the cursor back and forth to have content repeated. And because the topic of the video is at the learner's discretion, the learner may feel like he/she is getting individualized instruction that is not always available in larger classroom settings. The most beneficial aspect of the site are the quizzes that learners can take after viewing each lesson. These lessons ask students to apply the information presented in the videos. That is, instead of being comprehension questions about the lecture, the learners must use the particular language features being discussed.

"Teaching English with Technology (TEwT) is an online peer-reviewed journal that seeks to disseminate work mainly focused on how technology is being used, or could be used, in TESOL." A journal solely dedicated to teaching English with technology. This is obviously a great resource for our class, but also for our current and future classrooms. From what I've seen, I like this journal because it features ideas and research done in this setting. Very interesting!

If you were in listening/speaking last spring, you may remember this website I shared. It has lots of videos for learning American English pronunciation. I used it all the time while I was teaching pronunciation classes in Nebraska. At the time I didn't have any background in phonetics and was trying to teach myself. I found this site to be helpful for students as well as for novice teachers like myself. I used the videos to supplement our textbook (Clear Speech or Pronunciation Pairs). Students who had access to the internet could practice at home too. The videos show some close-ups of her mouth while making the sounds, so I brought small mirrors to class for students to use and watch their own mouths (not all students were comfortable doing this though). The site is well organized and you can easily find the sound/topic/skill you're looking for. You could also use the videos to create Grockit activities.
