Teenagers and social networking - it might actually be good for them - 4 views

  •
Given the harsh criticisms that social networks commonly face when it comes to their use by teenagers, I thought it would be useful to post this newspaper piece that presents the opposite argument: Social media might be usually considered to be just places of the lurking danger of real-life social isolation (among more gruesome dangers in this context), but they could also be seen as places where a teenager can be inventive, discover aptitudes and of course develop his/her social skills. Also, it discusses research which shows that teenagers are more often than not well aware of the dangers that lie behind the (ab)use of social media.

Hmmm, should I share this with my teenage son?

Good article, though I am still sceptical!

As High-Tech Teaching Catches On, Students With Disabilities Can Be Left Behind - 1 views

This is a great reminder that tech tools need to be accessible to everyone. The bonus advantage to accessibility is that students with mobile devices have a better chance of taking part, now, too. -- Tom Educational innovations like the flipped classroom, clickers, and online discussions can present difficulties for students with disabilities. The issue was highlighted this month, when Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were sued for allegedly failing to provide such students with closed captioning for online lectures and course

Here's a free PowerPoint template I built for a recent workshop. I used it to show how to create interactive conversations in PowerPoint using hyperlinks. In this example it's a simple back and forth conversation. This free template could be used as a way to share manager/employee information or perhaps as an FAQ interaction.

I saw a presentation from NEIU librarians who discussed an Edit-A-Thon they held. It can be a good way to each students about the way information is generated online, and also can be used to teach research practices (such as correct use of citations), among other things.

Love that the "practical descriptions of constructivist learning" listed in the article "[C]onstructivist learning should engage students in meaningful learning and ... the critical features are that the learning should be ... * Active and manipulative, engaging students in interactions and explorations with learning materials and provid[ing] opportunities for them to observe the results of their manipulations * Constructive and reflective, enabling students to integrate new ideas with prior knowledge to make meaning and enable learning through reflection * Intentional, providing opportunities for students to articulate their learning goals and monitor their progress in achieving them * Authentic, challenging and real-world (or simulated), facilitating better understanding and transfer of learning to new situations * Cooperative, collaborative, and conversational, providing students with opportunities to interact with each other to clarify and share ideas, to seek assistance, to negotiate problems, and discuss solutions."

7 out of 10 college students start their research with Wikipedia according to Project InfoLit's interviews. There's a disconnect between the handouts and faculty advice in my previous post and what students actually do. How can we use some of the tech tools discussed here to reconnect?

Useful Resource for Plagiarism - 2 views

  •
This thorough discussion on the types of plagiarism errors, with examples, is the most updated article I have found in terms of incorporating current issues created by the massive amount of information available online. It's a fantastic resource for both students and instructors.
  •
This is an excellent resource to identify what type of plagiarism mistakes are common among student. One important aspect of this article is related to misuse of online resources, in this age of technology students often use online resources, and also make mistakes in using them properly, which results in plagiarism. Thanks!
