In a recent survey by the Center for Education Policy, nearly all teachers agreed that collaboration is generally a good use of their time. To get that valuable time and space to collaborate with fellow educators-in their city, state, country or across the world-some teachers are taking to online networks and DIY-ing their own face-to-face meet-ups.

I saw a presentation from NEIU librarians who discussed an Edit-A-Thon they held. It can be a good way to each students about the way information is generated online, and also can be used to teach research practices (such as correct use of citations), among other things.

Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list. For example, a student may be asked to explain historical events, generate scientific hypotheses, solve math problems, converse in a foreign language, or conduct research on an assigned topic. Experienced raters--either teachers or other trained staff--then judge the quality of the student's work based on an agreed-upon set of criteria. This new form of assessment is most widely used to directly assess writing ability based on text produced by students under test instructions

I did a generic search for online learning, and this was the first result. It is interesting that Harvard has vested so much in its online presence. At one point the online certificate was described as Harvard "branded," which made me cringe a bit.
