Sustained, high-quality student participation usually doesn't happen on its own in the online learning environment. The instructor needs to model participation, create assignments that encourage it, and foster an environment that supports it. Here are some ways that I promote student participation in my online courses.

I've been experimenting with virtual labs in my physics courses - here's a bit of independent support for that notion. So far I've simply used the University of Colorado PhET site, but am interested to find other sources too. Wonder if anyone else has taken a more considered approach to multimedia "virtual" learning tools.

I could see using this in my College Success course. That class lends itself more to discussion in this forum.

Excellent FREE site for math and sciences. All grade levels. Short video clips using a blackboard with verbal direction. Great depth of content available. Would be helpful to post on course site, saving you from creating the videos.

You may have heard about our videos, but did you know that Khan Academy has fun interactive math exercises that cover skills ranging from counting to calculus, grade by grade? Every exercise has step-by-step hints, so your child can practice as much as needed.

This website has a great list of top tech tools for formative assessments. Although they are primarily for k-12 teachers, there are many ways to incorporate into a post secondary course such as increase the complexity of questions or have the students write their own assessments. Most of these are free and and are easy to use and teach. Teachers can use these tech tools for easy and interactive formative assessments.College instructors can use these tools to measure the students' understanding of the material and assess if review or re-teaching is necessary. Small assignments can be indicators for instructors and assist in "taking the pulse" of the class.

Below is a great idea from a science teacher who posted this on an NSTA listserv. This is a creative idea to promote student learning of basic foundation knowledge in an introductory level course. This technique promotes "students interacting, thinking, creating, communicating, and applying content/subject knowledge"!

Results from one survey suggest online instructors are more likely than on-campus instructors to use social media for both personal and professional reasons. In his University of Hawaii online course, Introduction to e-Learning, associate professor Michael Menchaca requires his students to introduce themselves to each other by creating 15-second videos on Instagram.

The particular workshop recording that interests me is the one on using peer review options for online teaching. This is something I'm trying to incorporate more of, and it was helpful to hear about how other teachers incorporate it into their courses!

Student perceptions on online learning

Very interesting indeed. I have always thought that students are more reflective when they post their responses online than when we are having F2F discussions in the classroom. And now it's supported by surveys. In the end it's true though that even if online courses require more self-motivation and time-management skills, student engagement still relies a lot on how the instructor manages the online classroom. This is of course a topic that is on every ones mind these days. I especially found this interesting since being in the heating and air conditioning field we have to take every caution because you don't know if the person you are providing service to is infected.
