  •
Harry discusses how the study of Social Media can help us better understand how youth are acting and interacting both online and offline, how young people adeptly navigate a growing and increasingly diverse assortment of social media, and how we can (and must) incorporate and account for social media in the classroom.

Doctors Should Use Social Media, but Carefully, Lawyers Say - ABANow - ABA Media Relati... - 0 views

  • June 17, 2011 Doctors Should Use Social Media, but Carefully, Lawyers Say By Rabiah Alicia BurksAmerican Bar Association News ServiceJune 17, 2011 CHICAGO
  • Doctors can add some new tools to their practices: telemedicine – which allows doctors to diagnose patients and prescribe medication online, and social media, which allows them to connect with their patients in new ways. Though there are benefits to using social media and telemedicine to serve patients, physicians should know about the legal issues involved and exercise caution when using the new tools. Attorneys should also help healthcare facilities create policies that will help them to avoid legal risks, said Nanette Elster, attorney at Spence & Elster, P.C. in Chicago.

Teenagers and social networking - it might actually be good for them - 4 views

  •
Given the harsh criticisms that social networks commonly face when it comes to their use by teenagers, I thought it would be useful to post this newspaper piece that presents the opposite argument: Social media might be usually considered to be just places of the lurking danger of real-life social isolation (among more gruesome dangers in this context), but they could also be seen as places where a teenager can be inventive, discover aptitudes and of course develop his/her social skills. Also, it discusses research which shows that teenagers are more often than not well aware of the dangers that lie behind the (ab)use of social media.

The myth about social media in the classroom is that if you use it, kids will be Tweeting, Facebooking and Snapchatting while you're trying to teach. We still have to focus on the task at hand. Don't mistake social media for socializing.

Social Media and Online Learning: Trends that Help Teach - 1 views

  •
This article describes the use of social media as a bridge between students, teachers, and the online course. Many students are currently using social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The challenge for instructors is to learn how to leverage that as as an opportunity to create value for the student, the course, and for the instructor. The growing trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is commonplace among many campuses and it is now becoming common for institutions to require students to supply their own technology tools.

65% of adults now use social networking sites - a nearly tenfold jump in the past decade Nearly two-thirds of American adults (65%) use social networking sites, up from 7% when Pew Research Center began systematically tracking social media usage in 2005.

These statistics are another reason why the use of social media and other technology tools should be incorporated somehow within education.

Alternative Social Media Tools for Teaching and Learning -- Campus Technology - 1 views

  •
This was an interesting list that suggested social media tools to use as alternatives to those that dominate social interaction on the web. The idea behind the suggestions are that for many students Facebook and Twitter exist within a personal social sphere, and that offering a separate space for academic interaction can help preserve the distinction between the two. Tom addressed the benefits of that approach and reasons why it may be worth pursuing in his post this week in the Technology Tools class.
