The Advantages and Disadvantages of Student Social Media Use - 0 views

  •
http://www.onlineuniversities.com/blog/2012/10/balancing-advantages-disadvantages-student-social-media-use/ "In " Only Disconnect," Andrew Reiner, writing for The Chronicle of Higher Education, lamented the state of American youth, particularly their preoccupation with social media. By the end of his article, Reiner advocated for social media Sabbaths, in which students would disconnect from their networks in order to more deeply engage with each other and their academic pursuits.

  •
... including Edmodo, Google Hangouts, LinkedIn and more ...
  •
Millennials live and breathe on social media, so teachers are learning how to incorporate the medium into the classroom successfully. In doing so, teachers not only encourage students to engage actively in the material, but they also provide online communities for students that might not exist for them in real life.

Mastering Online Discussion Board Facilitation - 2 views

  •
I love this publication on how to facilitate a discussion board. It is easy to read and just has a TON of tidbits on how do run a good discussion board in your online class. I refer to it often. It is a little old, so as I recall, there might be a few links within the document that are broken, but there is a lot of content, so you won't miss it probably.

Innovate My School - Creating the perfect video lesson for a flipped classroom - 3 views

  •
Video lessons are one of the primary technology tools used to deliver content in blended/flipped classrooms. The learning happens at home and when students are in class, they participate in active-learning activities or group work. Great to try out with a few lessons in f2f classes as well. It greatly increases student engagement and participation.

Thanks for sharing. This was a nice contrast to a previous article which focused on no video use in a flipped environment.

The 10 Best and Worst Ways Social Media Impacts Education - 1 views

  •
Social networking communities are here to stay. Facebook has over 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million. That's not even counting blogs or YouTube video blogs. There's no doubt that students are actively engaged in online communities, but what kind of effects are these sites having and how can parents counteract the bad and bolster the positive?

Student Perceptions | The Center for Teaching and Learning | UNC Charlotte - 2 views

    Student perceptions on online learning
  •
Very interesting indeed. I have always thought that students are more reflective when they post their responses online than when we are having F2F discussions in the classroom. And now it's supported by surveys. In the end it's true though that even if online courses require more self-motivation and time-management skills, student engagement still relies a lot on how the instructor manages the online classroom. Thanks for posting!
