Recent article on using social media

TT1921 (M Oyeleye) Prof. Garrett, What a great article to read! I was intrigued with this question, which I have tweaked a bit - "How can we as educators make the best use of Twitter or Diigo to help connect our students with amazing, inspiring personalities in the various fields we teach"?. Please, I will be interested in any response or comment on this?

One of many good articles for this week's study. I especially liked the Facebook uses.

Interesting article on student study groups. Introduction includes the potential pitfalls, moves on to the potentially enormously benefits, then offers a long list of suggestions for providing structure for study groups so that students benefit from them.

This article describes five different types of online cheating - plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, misrepresentation, and misbehavior. This article then goes in to three areas - Policing, Prevention, and Virtue Integration. For each of these topics there are multiple bullet points listed which help provide guidance and possible solutions to the issues. This is a very valuable link and I have bookmarked it as a future resource for reference.

The article seems more relevant for K-12 although it may be used to enlighten educators who continue to embrace the sage on the stage methodology of teaching.

Great article! While reading the article I immediately thought about how young children are taught to memorize the ABC's and numbers through rote learning. Young children actively engaged with letters and numbers using concrete objects to guide them in their learning results in higher-order thinking.

The faculty at my college have been discussing this current article that discusses how "at least 45 percent of undergraduates demonstrated no improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing skills in the first two years of college, and 36 percent showed no progress in four years." This article discusses some statistics of social networking use and how users can get scammed or information stolen through clicking on headers or sharing too much personal data.

Asynchronous and Synchronous E-Learning advantages and disadvanges. The article includes a chart for when to use each type of communication in an online class.

When it comes to trying something new or looking into more tools. I believe I would like to do more research to see what other online instructors are doing. In this case, I found a great website called, eLearning Industry: www.elearningindustry.com. Here I can find articles written by online teaching professionals and for online teaching professionals. Also, the website is easy to navigate and always updated.

Really has some nice information on tools available for online teaching.

Hi Kathy, good solid article and my favorite part related to one of the pod casts that we were assigned for Module 4 this week in our TT class. DeMarias says that the synchronous on line class should not be a literal translation of the f2f and she suggests the same concept as this article: a reconceptualization of the course all together. My least favorite part of the article was that we are developing "digital citizens of tomorrow". I totally agree but the sound of it is so robotic. :)
