In this article from The Gaurdian (UK) the author reports on a debate at King's College London where a respected panel and an energetic audience of students discussed the future of online technology and education. While students didn't think it was a big deal, not all of the educators saw technology and education flowing together so smoothly. A very interesting article.

This blog has followed social gaming juggernaut Zynga's progress for a couple years now. One of its most popular gaming apps is FarmVille, which runs on Facebook and touts an estimated 70 million players, making it one of, if not the, most popular games ever. Testaments to the game's popularity abound. I opted to post this here as we are debating the use of Web 2.0 tools in education. Farmville dominated Facebook games for a number of years, and educators made use of this trend to enhance their teaching. Though it has not been developed for educational purposes, I know even teachers of business studies who used it in their classes with students 13+ of age. This example should encourage us to make use of what is trending and popular with our students to our advantage!

The myth about social media in the classroom is that if you use it, kids will be Tweeting, Facebooking and Snapchatting while you're trying to teach. We still have to focus on the task at hand. Don't mistake social media for socializing.

You've heard the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, but when that picture is protected by copyright, the picture is only worth three words: cease and desist. OK, that's kind of a lawyer joke. But it illustrates how protective people are about finding their images used online without permission.

I find the entire copyright issue so darn confusing. This was a great post but with the exception of items such as photos and music, how do you protect intellectual property- meaning ideas? I find extremely difficult to live in this "let's all collaborate" world without guarding ideas I have for journal articles, etc. How far should we go to share and /or get exposure for our work? Any thoughts?

The debate surrounding social media as a learning tool is unlikely to abate any time soon. Is it just a distraction, or do the interactive educational tools available outweigh any disadvantages? Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, are becoming steadily more integrated within a variety of apps targeted at learning.

For any classroom this could work to engage with content.

Social networking communities are here to stay. Facebook has over 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million. That's not even counting blogs or YouTube video blogs. There's no doubt that students are actively engaged in online communities, but what kind of effects are these sites having and how can parents counteract the bad and bolster the positive?
