What is a board member? A board member is an individual on a company's board of directors which serves as an organization's governing body. Often elected by a company's shareholders, the board as a whole creates company policies and oversees the organization's managerial positions. How many members usually sit on a corporate board member? A typical board of directors has nine members, but some have three, and others have 31. Typically, private companies have between three and seven directors on their boards.
