The depths of Australia's emotional and strategic ties to Britain were revealed with the outbreak of World War One. When Andrew Fisher declared that: "Australians will stand beside our own to help and defend Britain to our last man and our last shilling", young Australian men volunteered in their enthusiastic thousands.
