Switch to Tags Ancient Chinese Calligraphy The study of ancient Chinese calligraphy is a very complex study that is rich in Chinesehistory. The earliest variant of Chinese calligraphy is referred to as Oracle Bone Script. Oracle Bone Script is the art of inscribing characters or symbols into Oracle Bones.

Calligraphy literally means "good writing". However, Chinese calligraphy cannot be defined as just "writing" Chinese characters. Neither can it be described as a way of making Chinese characters look "more beautiful". These are misassumptions often made. The most important aspect of it is, that it is an emotional form of art, as it carries the thoughts and feelings of the artist.

The History of Chinese Calligraphy Qin Dynasty 221 - 206 BC The Qin state, from whom the name China derived, became a superpower after a political reform of 356 BC. By 221 BC a series of wars enabled the Qin rulers to conquer the whole of China and ruled it as one state.

When Chin Shu Huan ( ) demolished the Six Nations and united the ancient China in 221 B.C., he asked the Prime Minister Lee Si ( ) to unify characters based on previous styles. The official standardized characters are called "Zuan Shu", or known as "Shiao Zuan" to distinguish from "Da Zuan."

Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, was 38 years old when he came into power, unifying China from a 200-year period where six warring states all vied for power. While his Dynasty only lasted 15 years, the impact of the Qin Emperor on China cannot be understated.

Chinese characters are the oldest script in the world which is still being used today. As early as 4000 years ago Chinese characters were used on oracle bones or tortoise shell. About 1.3 billion Chinese (PRC, Taiwan, overseas Chinese in the USA, Singapore etc.) use these characters today, which means about ¼ of mankind.

The Chinese writing system is one of the oldest known written languages - some of the earliest examples of ancient Chinese writing date back to over 4,000 years ago. The Chinese writing systems uses a logographic system (a series of symbols that represent a complete word or a phrase).
