I'm flagging this as it shows that it's currently possible to auto hand-off cellular service to Wifi. What happens when Wifi is faster and more pervasive since most revenue is cellular-data based?

I think the bigger point is the WIfi "mesh" networks could replace a lot of what is now done (with all it's limits) through cellular networks.

Comcast considering a wifi powered mobile service that would work using a combination of Comcast's million+ wifi hotspots and leased cellular capacity from other operators.

Could Google buy small amounts of cellular capacity from the telco's (ability to do so is mandated by the FCC) and then shift the bulk of mobile communications to the web and therefore undercutting expensive mobile plans?

The wireless carrier business model is based on expensive cellular data. If Wifi reaches near ubiquity why won't we all just switch to cheaper Wifi options? BTW 62% of all video on smartphones is done on Wifi today.

I'm not sure about cheaper, as opposed to reasoning of use. WiFi is incredibly ubiquitous in Europe, I would say in part because of the proximity of so many different countries. Imagine if your phone got exponentially more expensive to use between Georgia and Alabama (or if it just stopped working all together). I don't know how well this will play in the US beyond a physical space like the Stadium that's mentioned.

Holy C$#@! Am I missing something or is this massive? Combine this with Pcell (which is Mesh based). What happens when every device with a WiFi, Bluetooth or cellular conection forms a mesh network? Would everything/everyone always be connected? Who "controls it and how does anyone directly charge when it's all meshed together?

Google phone. Create enough Wifi islands and Google can rent the cellular network to bridge the gaps.

My hypothesis is that the "digital broadcast" scramble to buy/merge everything is defensive move mostly by the traditional telcos & ISP's. They see the upcoming disruption from Wifi/mesh networks that will erode their primary source of revenue from cellular data.

Why would you need "cellular carriers" when this goes live?

I.e our brain mass increases by a factor of X20-X30. We still have the processing time barrier unless our "bio-computer" bodies are quantum computers...
