The End of Books - 0 views

  •
An article from 1992 about the of books to be replaced by the then-new technology of hypertext. I find it an interesting contrast that back then the change was a new method of reading and access, while today's eBooks are more typically a print book repackaged for an electronic device.

Nine Reasons to Save Public Libraries - 0 views

  •
A fairly piece but notable as the reasons are relevant even in today's digital era.

Learning to Lead Others to Change | Leading From the Library - 0 views

  • “People don’t buy what we sell, they buy why we sell it”.
  •
Really great article about how to lead change in academic libraries. Apparently, trust and authenticity is the key.  "Building trust through authentic action helps lay the foundation upon which leaders can sell their vision for change."

A Washable Keyboard That's Worth Keeping Clean - 2 views

  •
Ok, this is cool.  I want one just so I can say I have one.  What I REALLY need though is an entire laptop made like this--get rid of that pesky pet hair and maybe when the dogs jump on my lap (and my laptop is on my lap) they won't break the keys off so easily!

Yes, hard to believe but there are still a lot of Americans without broadband.  In Missouri, the biggest problem is in Southeast Missouri.  When we were visiting Marble Hill, they told us that most of the population only had dial-up!

Want to Be a Great Leader? Start Reading - 0 views

  •
"Steve Jobs had an 'inexhaustible interest' in William Blake; Nike founder Phil Knight so reveres his library that in it you have to take off your shoes and bow; and Harman Industries founder Sidney Harman called poets 'the original systems thinkers,' quoting freely from Shakespeare and Tennyson."

A Digitally Inspired Veil, Intended to Save Lives, Appears at N.Y.U. Library - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  •
This headline caught my attention: "NYU Library Imprisons Students in a Video Game to Stop Them from Killing Themselves." The atrium of the school's main library has been enclosed with perforated aluminum screens, in an effort to curb suicides.

Gen Y: the most book-loving generation alive? - CSMonitor.com - 1 views

  •
"So much for Gen Y stereotypes. Turns out they aren't sun-deprived geeks sitting alone in the basement, with only a controller, joystick, or keyboard, and the final level of Skyrim to keep them company. There's a pile of books next to the game console, too."

Kopimism - 0 views

  •
The Church of "Copy-Me-ism," which holds file sharing as a sacred rite. Rather than having a dogma they have values. I'm unclear how much this is a sort of in-joke like the "Church of the Subgenius" or if it intends more cynically to circumvent copyright laws and rulings by declaring them against their religious sacraments.

A blog, appears largely inactive, about the Digital Public Library of America and other topics. Notable as it was co-found by Tom Peters, the new Dean of University Libraries at MSU.

This Super Mario Bros.-themed lamp (which cha-chings when punched) was one of many ideas featured at the recent ALA Virtual Conference, where the topic of makerspaces was discussed. The Mario-themed, cube-shaped lamp cha-chings when punched. "That light was awesome," said a Texas participant in the online chat sidebar.
  •
Can we get that lamp for the office?
  •
I was thinking the same thing! It would look great in the living room.
