Another article about what may be the short term existence of dedicated e-readers compared to tablets. Realistically an e-reader only offers a lightweight dedicated platform and for some models an e-Ink display that isn't practical for most tablets that do video and color.

A A Here's a sign that e-readers are struggling in the U.S.: E Ink Holdings, the Taiwan-based company that makes e-reader screens for companies such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Sony, just had its worst quarter in four years. This article had some interesting points and the comments brought up some good questions as well. As a former B&N employee it will be interesting to see what they do in the next coming years with the e-reader/e-books.

An interesting article that may spell bad news for makers of e-readers and particular E Ink. I would tend to agree with the assessment that dedicate e-readers are transition devices--much the same as electronic PDA's have been almost entirely replaced by smartphones. However, I would go further and say it's a format issue; people would tend to devices that are multifunction more often than one dedicated to a single purpose.

The Free Library of Philadelphia has a program in which free NOOK Simple Touch e-readers are loaned to patrons over the age of fifty. However, the NOOK is completely inaccessible to patrons who are blind. Library personnel had discouraged two blind patrons from even attempting to check out one of the devices. The library had also been issued letters from the Department of Education regarding the obligation of federally funded institutions to purchase accessible e-book readers and other technologies. It's not clear from the release what steps the library may have taken to remedy the situation or how it escalated to the point of a lawsuit.

An interesting survey where it shows younger readers 16-29 are more likely to use books, use traditional library services, and read e-books on an computer rather than an e-book reader than their older (30-49) counterparts.

Pricewaterhouse Coopers' Global Entertainment and Media Outlook predicts that E-books will make up 50 percent of the U.S. trade book market by 2016. Total book spending is predicted to be relatively flat, with the total spending on print books declining while e-books will grow fast enough by 2013 to offset the decline. E-book spending is predicted to skyrocket in North America, but will grow slower in Europe and Asia, with Japan and South Korea as notable exceptions.

This is pretty darn huge.  Keep in mind that Tor says nothing about whether piracy is bad, or whether or not electronic books should be cheaper, or more expensive.  But they do concede with this decision that DRM is more a hindrance than a help.

China, unlike much of the rest of the world, is experiencing a boom in publishing, helped a national outlook that has embraced learning and is commercializing publishing. The comments in the article noted that some e-readers are popular in China, but otherwise doesn't say much about the state of e-publishing.

In the past, publishers and authors had no way of knowing what happens when a reader sits down with a book. Does the reader quit after three pages, or finish it in a single sitting? Do most readers skip over the introduction, or read it closely, underlining passages and scrawling notes in the margins? Now, e-books are providing a glimpse into the story behind the sales figures, revealing not only how many people buy particular books, but how intensely they read them.

I realize I should probably be bothered by this some a privacy point of view, but I kind of like the idea that my reading habits are offering concrete feedback. "Dear publisher, this is where the book got boring and I gave up."

Interesting project in Austria. They placed 70 QR codes around the city each leading to a particular ebook or mp3 that can be downloaded for free.  The blog states, "This project is in effect giving digital content a finite location, thus removing one of the key aspects that separates paper books from ebooks". 

I wonder if the posts are in places with literary or historical significance-- e.g., a QR code near the former home of a famous author, leading to excerpts or readings from his or her books. I can see a huge potential for museums here, actually. For example, at the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, a QR code can be posted to information or collections on the Dred Scott Decision. Or here in Columbia, QR codes posted in the Red Campus can pull up copies of historical documents on the 1892 fire.

A somewhat hopeful article pointing out that the interest in e-book readers is leveling off while print continues, and that if anything things such as online self-publishing have helped as it reduces the risk for commercial publishers in recruiting new authors.

Tor Books, one of the leading publishers of Science Fiction, has reported that since they did away with DRM in their files a year ago that their business has hardly changed. Their reasoning was simple, their readers tended to be technologically savvy and DRM is a constant problem to them.

An article I have some mixed feelings about, seeming a little too much of a cheering section for print books. However, some good points have been made, that eBooks have begin some declines in sales and e-readers and tablets may not be well suited for all reading applications, ultimately complementing print books the same as audio books rather than replacing them.

In good news for readers and libraries, Macmillan, the last of five major publishers in an anti-trust lawsuit, have settled with the DOJ. This means that retailers can begin discounting digital titles they have for sale. Apple is the only publisher still outstanding in the lawsuit.

I love reading Bobbi's blogs and I follow her on twitter. She brings up some great points about e-books. This is a really complex issue and I don't think its going to get any easier. Coming from a retail background where I sold e-books and e-readers its interesting to hear the librarians' point of view. I think we've still got a long way to go be for anything will be settled in this big debate.

A new DRM feature called "SiDiM" intends to watermark eBooks by slightly changing the punctuation and text for each copy, this making them unique. Some concerns is how it may changes things for the reader or from what the author intended. A similar technique is used for some music files.

This was of interest considering my visit to the Wolfner Library during the conference. The issue seems to center around loosening copyright restrictions so blind readers can have more easy access to materials that have be converted into a format accessible to them, and the resistance of the entertainment and publishing industries even though it would be beneficial.
